Souq was an established online marketplace serving customers and merchants in the region. Amazon described it at the time as the largest online retail and marketplace platform in the Arab world; that characterization was Amazon’s, not an independent market-share ranking. Its announcement cited more than 8.4 million products across 31 categories and more than 45 million monthly visits in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt. Those figures were company-reported at the time of the announcement.
How much did Amazon pay?
The widely reported headline price was approximately $580 million in cash. Amazon’s SEC filings contain nearby figures because they present acquisition accounting estimates and net purchase-price calculations differently—not because Amazon announced several separate deal prices.

The Q2 filing’s preliminary purchase-price allocation also included an $86 million indemnification holdback; that allocation totaled $672 million. It is not the same measure as the commonly quoted cash price. For a concise description of the transaction, “about $580 million in cash” is the clearest shorthand, with the filing differences understood as accounting presentations and revisions.
What did Amazon gain besides a website?
The deal was a market-entry and infrastructure acquisition, not simply a purchase of web traffic. Souq brought an operating marketplace, relationships with local merchants and third-party sellers, customer knowledge, and experience handling regional commerce. Amazon’s announcement emphasized Souq’s presence in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, as well as its local expertise.

- Regional scale: Souq’s company-reported catalog and monthly visits indicated an established consumer destination, though they should not be read as audited market-share figures.
Amazon said the combination would give Souq access to its technology and global resources, while Amazon would benefit from Souq’s local expertise. In its 2017 Form 10-K, Amazon said the acquisition expanded its retail presence. The broader interpretation is that buying a functioning regional platform offered a faster route into markets with different languages, payment habits and logistics needs than building each capability independently; that is strategic analysis, not a separately stated Amazon admission.
How did Amazon integrate Souq?
The transition happened in stages. Souq remained a customer-facing brand after the 2017 closing while Amazon began connecting its global selection and capabilities to the regional marketplace.

2018: Amazon products arrive through Souq
On September 13, 2018, Souq announced the Amazon Global Store for customers in Saudi Arabia. It offered more than one million products from Amazon.com through Souq, an example of integration without an immediate brand replacement. See Amazon’s announcement.
2019: Souq becomes Amazon.ae in the UAE
On May 1, 2019, Souq’s UAE marketplace became Amazon.ae. Amazon said the new store retained products previously available on Souq while adding Amazon US selection, and launched with more than 30 million products. The announcement described Arabic and English interfaces, payments in dirhams, cash on delivery, local delivery options and seller tools. 2020–2021: Local Amazon marketplaces in Saudi Arabia and Egypt
Amazon.sa replaced the Souq marketplace in Saudi Arabia in 2020. In 2021, Amazon.eg launched in Egypt; Amazon described it as the former Souq.com business in its third-quarter results announcement. These country-specific transitions were not one simultaneous regional rebrand, and the UAE launch details should not be assumed to describe every seller’s experience or every service in the other markets.

The acquisition gave Amazon a practical foundation for expanding consumer e-commerce in three important markets, but it did not mean that Amazon.com could simply be copied across the region. Local language, payments, delivery, sellers and market conditions called for country-level operations. The gradual move from Souq to Amazon-branded marketplaces shows how Amazon paired global technology and selection with an existing regional platform.

The transaction’s strategic rationale is clear from Amazon’s stated focus on selection, delivery, technology and regional presence. The available figures here do not isolate Souq’s later financial performance from Amazon’s broader International business, so they do not establish that the acquisition was a financial success or quantify its return.
