Amazon and Microsoft are using corporate climate funds to back technologies that could help decarbonize delivery networks, data centers, buildings and supply chains. But venture investments are not the same as emissions cuts: Amazon reported higher absolute emissions in 2025, and Microsoft reported total emissions 23.4% above its 2020 baseline in the fiscal year covered by its 2025 sustainability report. The funds are bets on future solutions, not proof that either company has already bent its total emissions curve downward.

How the two climate funds compare

Measure Amazon Microsoft
Fund Climate Pledge Fund Climate Innovation Fund
Initial commitment $2 billion, announced as the fund’s initial commitment; Amazon does not publish a complete cumulative-spending total on its public fund pages. $1 billion, launched in 2020; Microsoft reported more than $793 million invested across 63 investments in its 2025 sustainability report.
Current public portfolio information 37 companies listed across eight sectors on Amazon’s public portfolio page; the listing can change. 63 investments reported by Microsoft in 2025, spanning areas including carbon-free electricity, sustainable fuels, carbon removal and advanced building materials.
Corporate climate target Net-zero carbon by 2040. Carbon negative by 2030.
Visible strategic emphasis Energy, transport and logistics, materials, packaging and circularity. Carbon removal, carbon-free electricity, sustainable fuels, materials and emissions-management capabilities.
Key emissions caveat Amazon said absolute emissions increased in its 2025 reporting, even as carbon intensity declined. Microsoft reported total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions 23.4% above its 2020 baseline for the fiscal year covered by its 2025 report.

Amazon describes its fund as corporate venture capital, not a grant program. The $2 billion figure is the fund’s initial commitment, not a disclosed tally of money already invested. Its public materials do not provide a complete total of cumulative deployment, individual check sizes, ownership stakes or valuation terms. See the Climate Pledge Fund and its portfolio.

Microsoft launched its fund in 2020 to help bring climate technologies to market, lower costs and accelerate adoption. Its reported investment figure is capital invested, not the same measure as the fund’s original $1 billion commitment. The fund sits alongside, but is distinct from, Microsoft’s carbon-removal purchasing and its wider carbon-negative-by-2030 plan. Microsoft’s 2025 Environmental Sustainability Report gives its latest reported investment count and total.

Amazon’s bets: decarbonizing a physical retail and logistics network

Amazon’s public portfolio spans eight categories: energy, transportation, buildings and materials, carbon removal, circular economy, food and agriculture, hydrogen, and water. The current portfolio page lists 37 companies. Its investments make particular strategic sense for a business with delivery fleets, warehouses, packaging, construction needs and energy-intensive AWS data centers.

Energy, storage and fuel

Companies listed by Amazon include Ambient Photonics, which develops low-light solar cells; Amogy, which works on ammonia-related energy technology; and Electric Hydrogen. Grid, storage and power-management technologies could matter to both logistics sites and data centers, where reliable electricity is essential. Funding a supplier, however, does not show that its technology is already operating at meaningful scale in Amazon facilities.

Vehicles, delivery and aviation

Amazon’s transportation interests include Rivian electric delivery vans and BETA Technologies electric aircraft, alongside technologies related to low-carbon fuels, fleets and charging. Amazon reported operating more than 52,700 electric delivery vans globally and delivering 2.4 billion packages using EVs in 2025. It also retains a goal of at least 100,000 electric delivery vans by 2030, according to its 2025 sustainability report.

Those deployment figures are more concrete than a portfolio announcement, but an electric van is not automatically zero-emission over its full lifecycle. Results depend on the electricity used for charging, how intensively the vehicle is used, manufacturing emissions, charging infrastructure and whether it replaces a combustion vehicle rather than simply expanding the fleet.

Buildings, concrete and industrial materials

Amazon’s portfolio includes CarbonCure, whose technology uses captured carbon in concrete, and Brimstone, which is developing lower-carbon cement. CMC Machinery and other industrial or packaging-related companies address adjacent needs. These bets are relevant because warehouses, offices and data centers require large volumes of construction materials. A lower-carbon material may avoid some future emissions; that is different from removing carbon already in the atmosphere.

Circularity, food and agriculture

Amazon-backed examples include Genecis, which converts food waste into biodegradable plastics and other materials, and Hippo Harvest, a controlled-environment agriculture company. Recycling, waste reduction and alternative materials connect to Amazon’s packaging and retail operations. Their climate value depends on lifecycle comparisons: for example, whether a substitute material actually lowers emissions after its feedstocks, energy use, transport and end of life are counted.

Carbon removal and other categories

Amazon lists carbon removal as a portfolio sector, but the public category alone does not establish that every company’s product permanently removes atmospheric carbon. Carbon removal, carbon utilization, emissions accounting and avoided emissions are different activities. Amazon’s public fund pages do not provide enough detail here to classify every current carbon-removal portfolio company by removal pathway, permanence or delivered tonnage, so the sector label should not be treated as evidence of verified removals.

Microsoft’s bets: carbon removal, clean power and cloud-related infrastructure

Microsoft’s 2025 report describes investments in carbon-free electricity, sustainable fuels, carbon removal and advanced building materials. The mix reflects both a corporate target—carbon negative by 2030—and the practical demands of cloud and AI infrastructure, including electricity and construction. A portfolio investment may support a future supplier or market; it does not, by itself, show that Microsoft has deployed the technology or reduced its own emissions.

Carbon removal: contracts are not delivered tonnes

Microsoft has invested in and contracted with carbon-removal companies including Climeworks, which uses direct air capture, and Heirloom, which uses mineral-based approaches to direct air capture. Microsoft’s 2024 report disclosed a contract for 5,015,019 metric tons of carbon removal to be retired over 15 years. That is a contracted future volume, not a claim that all those tonnes had already been removed when the report was published.

To assess a removal claim, readers need to distinguish tonnes contracted from tonnes delivered, and delivered tonnes from tonnes independently verified and retired. They should also ask how long carbon is expected to stay stored, how the process’s energy use is counted, what monitoring and verification apply, and whether the pathway removes atmospheric CO₂ or merely avoids emissions. Removal can address residual emissions; it is not interchangeable with cutting emissions that can be avoided.

Carbon-free electricity and grid infrastructure

Microsoft’s electricity strategy is broader than buying renewable-energy attributes. Several mechanisms are often blurred together:

  • Annual renewable-energy matching: purchases or certificates are used to match electricity consumed over a year. This does not establish that each hour of demand was served by clean power.
  • Renewable-energy certificates: these represent environmental attributes associated with renewable generation; buying them is not the same as physically receiving that power at a facility.
  • Power purchase agreements: contracts can support a renewable generator and provide a route to buy its output, but location and timing determine how closely that generation aligns with a particular data center’s demand.
  • Hourly carbon-free matching: this tests whether clean electricity supply matches consumption hour by hour, a more demanding measure than annual matching.
  • Grid upgrades, storage and on-site resources: these can help integrate and deliver clean power, but their actual emissions effects depend on operation and the surrounding grid.

Microsoft reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions down 29.9% from its 2020 baseline in FY24, while its total emissions remained higher because of value-chain growth, including AI and cloud expansion. The company’s 2025 report provides the emissions and investment figures; the different scopes should not be collapsed into a single claim of overall progress.

Sustainable fuels and materials

Microsoft has backed or partnered with technologies such as Twelve’s low-carbon fuels, and invested in advanced construction materials, including lower-carbon cement and concrete. These areas could matter to aviation, freight, data-center construction and other hard-to-abate activity. A demonstration or partnership is not proof of broad commercial supply. For fuels, lifecycle accounting must include electricity, feedstocks, transport and possible land-use effects; for materials, the relevant question is whether the product is being made and used at scale with lower lifecycle emissions.

Emissions software and measurement

Microsoft’s broader climate activity also touches software for emissions measurement, supplier tracking, carbon fees and sustainability reporting. Cloud and enterprise tools can make data easier to collect and manage, but better measurement does not reduce emissions by itself. The climate result depends on whether the information leads a business to change purchasing, operations, energy or design decisions.

What is different—and what has changed since 2023

The durable contrast is that Amazon’s portfolio is visibly connected to transport, logistics, packaging and physical operations, while Microsoft’s emphasis includes carbon removal, carbon-free electricity, sustainable fuels and the software and infrastructure around cloud operations. Both back energy and lower-carbon construction technologies, and both may gain strategic suppliers or commercial options alongside any climate benefit. A 2023 comparison identified 22 Amazon-backed and 25 Microsoft-backed companies at that time; those are historical counts, not current totals. Amazon’s public portfolio now lists 37 companies, while Microsoft reported 63 investments and more than $793 million invested in 2025. The earlier comparison is available from GeekWire.

These funds should not be confused with procurement or deployment. A venture investment is capital at risk in a company; a commercial partnership or purchase may create demand; a deployed product may change operations; a carbon-removal contract may promise future delivery. Each is a different stage, and none alone proves an emissions reduction. A portfolio company may also become a supplier, customer, cloud user, partner or acquisition prospect, making the fund both a climate vehicle and a commercial strategy.

The emissions reality behind the investment headlines

Amazon’s 2025 sustainability reporting says absolute emissions increased even as carbon intensity declined. Its report PDF gives approximately 80.85 million metric tons of CO₂e. Absolute emissions measure the total reported footprint; intensity relates emissions to a business measure. Intensity can improve while the total rises if activity grows faster than emissions efficiency improves. Amazon also says it matched 100% of its operational electricity with renewable-energy sources for three consecutive years through 2025. That is an electricity-matching claim, not evidence that every data-center hour was supplied by carbon-free power. The figures and qualifications are in Amazon’s 2025 report PDF and report summary.

Microsoft’s 2025 report states that total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in the fiscal year covered were 23.4% above its 2020 baseline. It attributes pressure in part to value-chain growth associated with AI and cloud expansion. The 29.9% Scope 1 and 2 reduction from the baseline reported for FY24 is a narrower boundary and should not be mistaken for a reduction in total emissions. Microsoft’s carbon-negative-by-2030 target is a future goal, not a statement that current emissions are already negative.

For both companies, the challenge is a collision between expanding infrastructure demand and climate targets. Data centers need electricity; their construction requires steel, concrete and other materials; and the companies’ wider supply chains add emissions beyond facilities they operate directly. Clean-energy procurement, vehicles and venture bets may help address parts of that footprint, but the useful test is whether they produce measurable reductions in absolute emissions and whether deployment keeps pace with growth.

How to judge whether a climate investment is working

A name on a portfolio page is an early signal of corporate interest, not a climate-impact result. For any investment, procurement deal or deployment, ask:

  • Additionality: Would the project or production capacity have happened without the corporate capital or purchase?
  • Stage and scale: Is the technology in a pilot, demonstration or commercial operation, and how much is actually being produced or used?
  • Operational connection: Is Amazon or Microsoft using the solution in its own business, or is the expected impact elsewhere in the market?
  • Lifecycle impact: Do calculations include manufacturing, energy, transport, feedstocks and end-of-life emissions?
  • For removals: Are tonnes delivered, independently measured, verified and retired, and what is the storage duration and reversal risk?
  • For power: Does procurement add clean supply where and when it is needed, or rely mainly on annual matching?
  • Commercial ties: Does the portfolio company depend on the investor as a customer, cloud provider or buyer, and how might that relationship affect claims?
  • Timeliness: Can the solution contribute before the company’s 2030 or 2040 target date, rather than only in a distant future?
  • Company-wide outcome: Do absolute emissions fall, not only emissions per unit of revenue, package, compute or another intensity measure?

The strongest evidence is a chain from committed capital to operating capacity, verified climate performance and a change in the company’s own footprint. Where that chain is incomplete, the claim should remain proportionate to the evidence.
