Meta’s Pacific Northwest Leader Steps Down; Phase Genomics Names Its First Chief Business Officer

A GeekWire Tech Moves roundup published October 9, 2024, reported that Paresh Rajwat had stepped down as Meta’s Pacific Northwest head of office during the summer, while remaining identified as a Meta vice president of product management. The same roundup reported that Seattle biotech company Phase Genomics hired David Shoultz as its first chief business officer. These are historical announcements; the available reporting does not establish the people’s current roles.

What changed in Meta’s Pacific Northwest leadership?

Rajwat had led Meta’s Pacific Northwest office for the preceding two years and had spent about a decade at the company. His regional office role was distinct from his broader position as a Meta vice president of product management. The October 9, 2024 report said he stepped down from the regional post during summer 2024 and planned to focus on angel investing, advising, and board service. It did not say he had left Meta entirely. GeekWire’s report also noted his earlier experience at Apple, Microsoft, Yahoo, and other companies.

A large regional operation, but no successor named then

GeekWire reported that Meta had more than 8,000 employees in the Pacific Northwest. Rajwat described the region as Meta’s largest technology hub outside Menlo Park. In his account, the local work spanned engineering, infrastructure, artificial intelligence, monetization, Reality Labs, and Family of Apps. Those scale and ranking descriptions are attributed to the report and Rajwat, respectively; they are not a current workforce count or independently established ranking here.

A regional office leader can be an important point of contact for recruiting, civic engagement, office strategy, and relationships with local institutions. The report did not specify whether Meta eliminated or restructured the position, assigned its responsibilities temporarily, or later named a successor. No replacement had been announced at publication.

Why did Phase Genomics create a chief business officer role?

Phase Genomics, a Seattle biotechnology company, hired David Shoultz as its first chief business officer. This was a newly established C-suite position, not a reported replacement for a departing executive. Shoultz had co-founded Monod Bio and served as its chief operating officer; he had also held leadership roles at the Gates Foundation and directed PATH’s global drug-development program.

Founder and CEO Ivan Liachko said the appointment was intended to accelerate adoption of Phase Genomics’ technologies. The company works on sequencing and analyzing DNA from organisms that can be difficult to study, including through genomic-proximity, or Hi-C-based, methods. Its work also includes detecting chromosomal abnormalities, including those relevant to tumors. Phase Genomics’ news archive includes the GeekWire coverage.

What the title does—and does not—tell readers

A first chief business officer often signals an effort to organize commercial development, partnerships, or market expansion. In this case, Liachko’s stated goal was broader adoption of the company’s technologies. The report did not provide a job description, sales or licensing remit, revenue target, customer list, or commercialization forecast, so it does not establish which specific responsibilities Shoultz held.

Other personnel changes in the October 2024 roundup

The roundup covered a mix of interim finance leadership, operating roles, board appointments, and individual career transitions—not a single pattern such as layoffs. The details below reflect what GeekWire reported at the time; they should not be read as updates to current roles.

Executive leadership and career transitions

  • Sana Biotechnology: Susan Wyrick became acting chief financial officer, treasurer, and principal accounting officer after Nathan Hardy stepped down as CFO for personal reasons. CEO Steve Harr was also described as acting principal financial officer. Wyrick had previously been a vice president and controller at Juno Therapeutics. These were acting appointments, not confirmation of a permanent CFO succession.
  • CTL: Co-founder and longtime CEO Erik Stromquist became board chair, and Jason Mendenhall became CEO. Mendenhall had been chief product officer at Mind Education and previously worked in education, beginning as a classroom teacher.
  • Outreach: Kevin Bognar left his role as global senior vice president of sales to care for his adult son after a serious accident. He said he was looking for a new role; the account framed this as a personal transition, not an employer-initiated exit.
  • Accenture: Macey McGovern became a senior strategy consultant in Seattle after serving as Seattle director of Creative Destruction Lab. Her LinkedIn post independently confirmed the transition from CDL-Seattle.
  • Microsoft: Meg O’Conor Bannecker joined as senior communications manager focused on Washington state media, working with the Corporate Engagement and Legal Affairs team. She previously directed public relations and internal communications at NanoString Technologies. Her LinkedIn post confirmed the Microsoft move.

Board and advisory appointments

  • Technology Alliance and local civic organizations: Technology Alliance CEO Laura Ruderman joined the boards of Ada Developers Academy and KUOW Public Radio. Her background included Washington state government, political consulting, and Microsoft.
  • Zensai: Former Microsoft executive David Willis became board chair. GeekWire described Zensai as an AI-powered employee-engagement and performance-management platform integrated with Microsoft 365 and Teams.
  • Technology Alliance board: Jaime Shimek, executive director of communications at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, joined the board.
  • Teal Communications: Anthony Middleton joined the Seattle IoT company’s advisory board. The company described him as having more than 25 years of international experience across defense, telecommunications, and wireless industries.

Academic recognition

  • Cornell Tech: Nicola Dell, who earned a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, received a MacArthur Foundation fellowship.

What remains unconfirmed

  • The October 2024 account did not name a successor to Rajwat or explain whether Meta changed the regional leadership role’s structure.
  • It did not establish Shoultz’s detailed remit, reporting line, compensation, start date, or commercial targets.
  • The roundup is a dated record, not a status check. It does not establish whether any person listed later changed roles.
