Huawei executive Richard Yu was reported to have called the Mate 70 “100% made in China,” while separate reports said Huawei had achieved domestic production of chips for the Mate 70 series. Those claims are not equivalent. Teardown reporting supports the presence of a Huawei-designed, China-fabricated processor, but also found South Korean memory in at least one Mate 70-series phone.
What did Huawei’s CEO reportedly claim?
In December 2024, reports said Richard Yu, Huawei’s consumer business group chairman, described the Mate 70 as “100% made in China” during an appearance at Baoan Middle School in Shenzhen. The wording should be treated as reported speech: the available accounts do not establish an authoritative transcript of the remark. Reports also described Yu as saying Huawei had achieved 100% domestic production of chips for the Mate 70 series. That narrower claim does not establish that every part of each phone was Chinese-made. Android Headlines’ report and Huawei Central’s account distinguish the broader phrasing from the chip-production claim.
What parts were independently identified as Chinese?
The clearest evidence concerns the main processor in a high-end model. TechInsights identified a Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 9020 in its teardown of a Mate 70 Pro+ and attributed its fabrication to China’s SMIC on a 7nm-class 7N+2 process. Reuters likewise reported the teardown finding. This supports a meaningful domestic chip-manufacturing achievement, not a complete inventory of Chinese-made parts. TechInsights’ Kirin 9020 analysis describes the processor and process; Reuters’ report characterizes the chip as an incremental update rather than a major redesign.
Why the chip matters—and what it does not prove
Keeping a flagship smartphone processor in production through Huawei’s own chip-design arm and a Chinese foundry is strategically important amid restrictions affecting Huawei’s access to advanced semiconductor technology. But a 7nm-class chip is not evidence of parity with the newest leading-edge manufacturing processes, and domestic fabrication of one important chip does not demonstrate that the phone’s entire supply chain is domestic.

What foreign components did teardown reporting find?
The key counterexample is memory. The South China Morning Post, citing TechInsights teardown analysis, reported that a Mate 70 Pro contained South Korean SK Hynix DRAM and NAND memory. That finding contradicts the literal claim that the tested configuration had no foreign components. It does not show that every Mate 70 unit uses SK Hynix parts, nor does one teardown establish the origin of every component in every model or production batch. The SCMP report identifies the memory finding.
“Made in China” can describe different things
The phrase is ambiguous unless it specifies what is domestic. A phone may combine components designed in China, chips fabricated in China, assembly performed in China, and parts sourced from suppliers elsewhere. Those are distinct claims:

- Chinese-designed: a Chinese company designed a component, as Huawei’s HiSilicon designed the Kirin processor.
- Chinese-fabricated: a chip was manufactured at a Chinese foundry, as TechInsights attributed the Kirin 9020 to SMIC.
- Chinese-assembled: the finished phone was assembled in China; that alone says nothing about where its internal parts were made.
- Entirely Chinese bill of materials: every component is sourced from China. The available teardown evidence does not support this for at least one tested configuration.
“100% domestic production of chips” is also narrower than “100% domestic bill of materials.” It may describe a defined category of chips, not every semiconductor or physical item inside the handset.
Which Mate 70 model and production batch are we talking about?
“Mate 70” can mean the base phone or the family launched in China on November 26, 2024: Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, Mate 70 Pro+, and Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design. TechInsights describes the family as using Kirin 9010 and Kirin 9020 processors, so a finding about a Pro or Pro+ should not automatically be applied to every variant. Teardown results describe the particular device examined. Models, configurations, regional versions, and production batches can differ, and Huawei says product information may be adjusted according to production batches and supply conditions. Its Mate 70 Pro+ product page includes that qualification. Huawei’s official specifications list product features, but not a complete component-by-component country-of-origin bill of materials. There is therefore no basis here for calculating a percentage of Chinese content.

No. Huawei’s specifications say some Mate 70 Pro+ units ship with HarmonyOS 4.3 and can be upgraded to HarmonyOS 5.0, while certain NEXT versions ship with HarmonyOS 5.0. That describes software, not the origin of memory or other hardware. A domestically developed operating system and foreign-sourced components can coexist in the same phone. Final verdict: a real chip milestone, not proof of an all-Chinese phone
