Nearly a decade later, federal agents found Bitcoin hidden in his Georgia home. The government’s final forfeiture orders covered 51,680.32473733 Bitcoin, valued at more than $3.4 billion at the time of seizure—not at today’s Bitcoin price.
How James Zhong stole Bitcoin from Silk Road
Silk Road operated roughly from 2011 to 2013 as a darknet marketplace for illegal goods and services. Zhong did not use it to buy or sell goods. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), he used accounts on the site as conduits to exploit the way withdrawals were processed.
In September 2012, Zhong created about nine accounts and deposited amounts ranging from 200 to 2,000 Bitcoin. He then made more than 140 rapid withdrawal requests. In the DOJ’s example, a 500-Bitcoin deposit was followed less than five seconds later by five withdrawals of 500 Bitcoin each, all within the same second. The sequence left Zhong with a net gain of 2,000 Bitcoin.
The scheme yielded approximately 50,000 Bitcoin. The DOJ described the problem as a flaw that let Zhong trigger withdrawals many times greater than his deposits—not as a purchase, sale, or transfer of legitimate marketplace goods.

How investigators traced the Bitcoin to Zhong
The public DOJ account says investigators traced the funds through a decentralized mixer, an overseas exchange, and other tools. A mixer is intended to make links between cryptocurrency transactions harder to follow; using one did not prevent investigators from tracing the funds in this case. The DOJ’s public description does not provide a step-by-step account of every tracing technique.
On November 9, 2021, IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) agents searched Zhong’s home in Gainesville, Georgia. They found approximately 50,491.06251844 Bitcoin hidden in an underground floor safe and on a single-board computer submerged beneath blankets in a popcorn tin. The search also recovered $661,900 in cash, 25 Casascius physical-Bitcoin coins containing about 174 Bitcoin collectively, and precious-metal items.

Why the final forfeiture total differs from the amount found at home
The home-search figure is not the same as the Bitcoin covered by the government’s final forfeiture orders. Zhong voluntarily surrendered additional Bitcoin between March and June 2022; the DOJ’s final accounting lists 1,004.14621836 Bitcoin surrendered in total. The final orders, entered in February and March 2023, covered 51,680.32473733 Bitcoin, as well as cash, metals, the Casascius coins, and Zhong’s 80% interest in RE&D Investments, LLC.
The DOJ valued the final Bitcoin total at more than $3.4 billion at the time of seizure. That is a historical valuation tied to the government’s seizure, not a statement of the Bitcoin’s current market value. The DOJ’s 2022 announcement had described approximately 50,676.17851897 Bitcoin as worth $3.36 billion; the later final-order announcement used a larger total after the case’s final accounting.

What happened to Zhong
Zhong pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud on November 4, 2022. On April 14, 2023, Judge Paul G. Gardephe sentenced him to one year and one day in prison. The courts’ forfeiture orders addressed the Bitcoin and other assets connected to the case.

The Zhong case is distinct from a separate Silk Road-related recovery announced in November 2020. In that Northern District of California case, IRS-CI and a third-party attribution company identified 54 previously undetected transactions and traced funds to a Bitcoin address linked to a person the DOJ called “Individual X.” The government filed a civil forfeiture complaint for thousands of Bitcoin then worth more than $1 billion. Chainalysis and Excygent assisted that investigation.

| Case | Seizure date and Bitcoin amount | Value at the time | Investigation and legal action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual X (Northern District of California) | November 3, 2020; thousands of Bitcoin. The DOJ announcement did not state an exact amount. | More than $1 billion | 54 previously undetected transactions were identified and traced to an address linked to Individual X; the government filed a civil forfeiture complaint. |
| James Zhong (Southern District of New York) | Home search on November 9, 2021: approximately 50,491.06251844 Bitcoin recovered. The later final forfeiture orders covered 51,680.32473733 Bitcoin. | More than $3.4 billion for the final-order total, valued at the time of seizure | Investigators traced funds through a mixer, an overseas exchange, and other tools. Zhong pleaded guilty, and courts entered final forfeiture orders in 2023. |
Silk Road’s founder, Ross Ulbricht, was convicted in 2015. The two Bitcoin recoveries concern assets linked to the marketplace, but the DOJ described them as separate investigations with different subjects and legal proceedings.
