Datto announced its acquisition of Backupify on December 11, 2014, to add cloud-to-cloud backup for software-as-a-service applications to its existing hybrid-cloud backup and disaster-recovery platform. The companies did not disclose the terms. The deal aimed to extend protection across business data held on local systems, virtualized environments and third-party cloud services.

Why did Datto acquire Backupify?

Datto saw a gap between protecting conventional IT infrastructure and protecting data stored inside SaaS applications. Its announcement described businesses’ data as increasingly spread across on-premises servers, virtualized environments and third-party clouds. Backupify brought cloud-to-cloud backup and recovery for SaaS, while Datto brought broader business-continuity, appliance and cloud-recovery capabilities.

The strategic goal was a “Total Data Protection Platform”: protection and recovery for data wherever it lived, including in the event of disasters or IT failures. Datto founder and CEO Austin McChord said that as data moved among on-premises systems, virtualized environments and third-party clouds, “data protection and recovery takes on a whole new meaning.” Datto’s announcement

What Backupify added to Datto

Backupify’s cloud-to-cloud approach backed up SaaS data separately from the application provider. That complemented Datto’s existing hybrid-cloud backup and disaster-recovery offering, which focused more broadly on business systems and continuity. Company materials named Salesforce, Google Apps (now Google Workspace) and Microsoft Office 365 among the workloads covered.

In 2015, Datto introduced Datto Backupify for Office 365, describing automated, secure cloud-to-cloud backup. The announcement also identified Google Apps, Salesforce and other SaaS applications in the portfolio. Datto’s Office 365 announcement In 2017, Backupify described point-in-time backup for OneDrive, Exchange and SharePoint, alongside enterprise-wide discovery search. Those are dated product details; they should not be assumed to describe every feature or service level of the current product.

What the companies reported at the time

Backupify reported that in 2014 it protected 1.5 million users, backed up more than 4 petabytes of data and had restored 24 million files on behalf of customers. These are historical figures reported by Backupify, not measures of current service scale. Backupify’s 2014 figures

How Backupify’s product changed

Backupify Legacy retirement

Datto retired the Backupify Legacy platform for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace effective June 30, 2021. Datto said legacy data was archived in its Microsoft Azure instance. Customers considering migration or access to historic backups should check their account and service arrangements rather than assume the legacy platform remains available. Rebrand to Datto SaaS Protection

Effective April 1, 2025, Backupify was rebranded as Datto SaaS Protection. The official notice says customer contracts and business activities moved to Kaseya-affiliated entities according to region, and that service operations would continue. “Backupify” therefore describes the acquired business and its legacy platform lineage; Datto SaaS Protection is the successor name identified in the current documentation. What the acquisition meant for MSPs

Datto sold its products through managed service providers (MSPs), which manage technology and services for business clients. Adding SaaS backup broadened the kinds of client data an MSP could protect alongside infrastructure backup and business continuity. In 2017, Pax8 announced a worldwide strategic distribution partnership covering Datto business-continuity, disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS), managed networking and cloud-to-cloud backup offerings. That announcement is historical channel context, not confirmation of present-day partner eligibility, geographic availability, pricing or commissions. MSPs evaluating the successor service should verify current enrollment and commercial terms directly with the relevant provider.

What business buyers should verify today

The acquisition explains the product lineage, but it does not establish current coverage or capabilities. Before selecting a SaaS backup service, an IT team or MSP should confirm details for its specific edition, region and contract:
