The deal completed in December 2021. The figure was announced as total consideration involving cash, deferred cash and newly issued shares—not as an all-cash purchase price. Kape’s announcement set out the transaction terms.
What happened in the acquisition?
Kape Technologies said a wholly owned subsidiary had agreed to acquire the assets, liabilities and service entities comprising the ExpressVPN business from Access Global Limited and its subsidiaries. Kape announced the transaction on 13 September 2021, with total consideration of approximately US$936 million. The announced consideration combined cash, deferred cash and newly issued shares, so the headline amount should not be read as the amount of cash paid at closing.
When did Kape complete the purchase?
On 15 December 2021, Kape said completion was expected on 16 December. ExpressVPN’s announcement dated 16 December 2021 confirmed that it had officially joined Kape. That marked the move from an announced agreement to a completed acquisition.
What did ExpressVPN tell customers?
In a FAQ published alongside the September 2021 announcement, ExpressVPN said there would be no immediate changes to subscriptions or service directly because of the deal. It also said the service would continue as a separate brand, run by its existing team. These were company assurances about the immediate impact at the time; they do not independently establish how the organization operated in later years.

The FAQ said ExpressVPN would update its terms and privacy policy to reflect relevant changes in ownership or legal entities. That is distinct from whether a customer experienced an immediate service change: the FAQ addressed both matters separately.
Who controls ExpressVPN account data under its current policy?
ExpressVPN’s privacy policy, last updated 1 January 2026, identifies ExpressVPN as the controller of account personal data rather than Kape Technologies PLC, its ultimate holding company. The policy also describes limited processing by related entities for stated purposes.
