Sage said no invoices were exposed, but it has not published an exact count of affected customers or a technical explanation of the issue.
What happened with Sage Copilot?
On 20 January 2025, The Register reported that a customer asked Sage Copilot for a list of recent invoices and the assistant reportedly returned information from other customer accounts, as well as the customer’s own account. The issue was reported to support and verified. Sage took Copilot offline for several hours while it investigated and implemented a fix.
Sage characterized the incident as involving a “small amount of customers” and said unrelated business information was shown to a “very small number of customers.” Its spokesperson said: “At no point were any invoices exposed.” The report describes cross-account retrieval or display during an invoice query; it does not establish that invoice files were stolen or exposed.
What was Sage Copilot, and who could use it?
Sage unveiled Copilot in February 2024 as an AI assistant intended to handle administrative and repetitive tasks, catch errors, and recommend actions. When the incident occurred, it was an invitation-only early-access product used by a small, unspecified number of customers.

In a 27 January 2025 announcement, Sage said Copilot would become generally available to UK small and midsize businesses from March 2025. That is a UK availability statement made at that time; it does not establish current availability in other countries or for every Sage plan.
Why does cross-account access matter in accounting software?
Sage described Copilot functions involving tax regulations, profitability, cash-flow control, overdue payments, customer activity, and receipt and invoice processing. These tasks depend on sensitive financial and business records. An assistant must be authorized to use the right records for the right customer, and its responses must not draw on another customer’s data.

For buyers, the incident illustrates why vendor claims about AI features are not enough on their own. Before enabling an accounting assistant, ask how it separates each customer’s context, restricts access, records activity, and handles incidents. Useful questions include:
- How is each company’s data partitioned, and what authorization checks apply when the assistant retrieves records?
- Have tests specifically tried to make the assistant return another customer’s information through prompts or queries?
- What audit logs are available to customers, and how are suspicious access or responses investigated?
- What are the data-retention and model-training terms for prompts and retrieved records?
- Which actions require a human review or approval before they affect accounting records?
- How and when will the vendor notify customers if their data may have been exposed?
What is known—and what remains unclear?
Sage said it paused Copilot, investigated the problem, and fully implemented a fix. Its public statement does not disclose the exact number of affected customers or identify the technical component that caused the cross-account display.

The available reporting also does not establish whether a regulator was notified, whether invoice content was technically accessible despite Sage’s denial that invoices were exposed, or whether an independent audit followed. Those points remain unresolved; they should not be treated as proof either that invoices were accessed or that no further investigation occurred.
