Futurism’s Victor Tangermann reported on February 14, 2026, that former xAI staffers had described frustrations with the company’s safety priorities and technical progress. They said xAI struggled to stand apart from competitors
One former employee characterized xAI as “stuck in the catch-up phase,” arguing that rapid iteration had not produced a major advance over OpenAI, Anthropic, or other companies. Futurism reproduced the employee’s description: “Although we were iterating really fast, we were never able to get to a point like, ‘Oh, we’ve made a step function change over what OpenAI or Anthropic or other companies had released.”
Another former employee said, “Trying to do what OpenAI was doing a year ago is not how you beat OpenAI.” These quotes convey those employees’ judgments; they are not a measured comparison of the companies’ models or products.

They raised concerns about safety
Former staffers also criticized safety practices. One described safety as “a dead org at xAI,” while another said, “There is zero safety whatsoever in the company — not in the image [model], not in the chatbot,” as quoted by Futurism. The statements are allegations from unnamed former employees, not an independently established assessment of xAI’s organization or safeguards.
What the departure reports establish—and what they do not
TechCrunch reported on February 14, 2026, that at least 11 engineers and two co-founders had announced they were leaving during that week. The figure is a dated count reported at the time, not a current headcount or evidence that all those people left for the same reason. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report also describes Elon Musk as characterizing changes as a reorganization; the available coverage does not include a directly sourced primary statement from Musk.

One former employee’s broader account of the company culture was: “You survive by shutting up and doing what Elon wants,” according to Futurism’s reproduction of the Verge reporting. That is an unnamed source’s characterization, not a documented company policy.
