What did each launch price include?
Apple listed the iPhone 16 Pro Max at $1,199 in the United States, with 256GB of storage as its base configuration. The M4 Mac mini launched at $599 with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. These are starting prices, not necessarily the prices for configurations with matching storage or for a complete desktop setup. Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro announcement and Mac mini announcement give the U.S. launch figures.

The $600 gap is a comparison of two base prices, not a measure of how much more it costs Apple to manufacture the phone. Apple’s cited launch pages do not provide product-level component costs, margins or a dollar breakdown of the systems inside either device.
The iPhone is a complete mobile system
The iPhone price covers a high-end display, battery, cellular radios, cameras, sensors and touch input as well as the computer itself. Those parts make it usable as a phone and handheld computer without buying a separate screen or connecting it to a wired network. Apple described the iPhone 16 Pro line as featuring the A18 Pro chip, larger displays, Camera Control, pro camera features and improved battery life. Apple’s product announcement describes those features.

This is a difference in product scope, not proof that any individual phone component accounts for a particular share of the price. The published specifications explain what the customer receives; they do not disclose the cost of producing each part.
The Mac mini price assumes you provide the rest of the desktop
The M4 Mac mini is a compact desktop compute unit, not an all-in-one computer. Apple specifies a 5-by-5-inch enclosure, M4 with a 10-core CPU and GPU, 16GB of unified memory, 256GB of base SSD storage, display outputs and Thunderbolt and USB-C ports. The buyer needs a monitor and input devices to use it as a desktop. Depending on the setup, a person may also need speakers, a dock or hub, or other accessories. Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications list its ports and hardware.

For a fair household-budget comparison, add the cost of anything you do not already own and intend to buy for the Mac mini. A monitor and keyboard are not part of its $599 starting price. If you already have compatible peripherals, however, you may not need to spend that money to use the computer.
Why the cheaper computer can still be powerful
Retail price does not directly rank computing performance. Apple reported that the M4 Mac mini’s CPU is up to 1.8 times faster and its GPU up to 2.2 times faster than the M1 Mac mini. Those are Apple’s comparisons against that specific predecessor, not a direct benchmark against the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple kept the M4 Mac mini’s U.S. starting price at $599 at launch. Apple’s announcement includes the performance claims.

The Mac mini is designed around desktop use: mains power, external displays and wired expansion. The iPhone combines computing with mobility, cellular service, cameras and a built-in interface. A powerful desktop can therefore cost less at retail than a self-contained mobile device without that price difference establishing which chip is faster in every task or which product is better value for a particular person.
Compare the configurations and the setup you will actually use
Match storage before comparing prices
The iPhone 16 Pro Max starts at 256GB and was offered up to 1TB; the M4 Mac mini also starts at 256GB SSD, with paid storage upgrades. Compare the prices of the capacities you would actually buy rather than assuming every higher-capacity option has the same value or upgrade cost. The iPhone announcement gives the phone’s storage range; Mac mini specifications cover its available configurations.

Include only desktop items you need to purchase
Estimate the Mac mini’s effective setup cost as the computer configuration plus any monitor, keyboard, mouse and other necessary accessories you still need to buy. Do not add peripherals you already own, and do not count optional items as if they were included in Apple’s $599 price. There is no single fair all-in total without knowing the buyer’s existing equipment and chosen configuration.

Apple says the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max contain more than 25% recycled material overall and use a battery made with 100% recycled cobalt. Apple describes the M4 Mac mini as its first carbon-neutral Mac and says it models emissions reductions of more than 80% versus a business-as-usual scenario.
