Why Slovenia’s .si Domain Registrations Surged After Trump’s “Super Intelligence” Order

Slovenia’s .si domain registrations surged amid attention to Trump’s “super intelligence” terminology, though the increase began before his UN remarks and is not proof of a single cause.

Slovenia’s .si domain saw an exceptional rise in registrations in September and early October 2026, as “SI” gained attention in President Donald Trump’s language about “super intelligence.” But the growth was already underway before his September 22 remarks at the United Nations, and the available evidence does not show that his comments alone caused it. The White House described the September 29 executive order as a terminology directive for federal executive-branch departments and agencies—not a universal renaming of artificial intelligence.

Why are .si domains suddenly popular?

The timing put Slovenia’s country-code domain in the path of a U.S. political news cycle. Trump used “super intelligence” and “SI” in remarks at the UN General Assembly on September 22, 2026. On September 29, the White House said he had signed an executive order directing terminology changes inside the federal executive branch. In the White House’s account, the order directs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology to propose a federal definition of “Super Intelligence” and “SI.” It does not establish a technical definition or name change for AI worldwide. (White House fact sheet, September 29, 2026)

The overlapping abbreviation made .si attractive to people registering names speculatively, protecting a brand, or responding to the news. The registry’s public counter and Netcraft’s dated observations show a sharp rise, but they are snapshots taken at different times and should not be treated as one fixed total.

What do the registration figures show?

Register.si’s live counter figures reproduced by Netcraft on September 23 showed 4,794 registrations in the previous 24 hours, 3,515 in the previous month, and 198,535 .si domains in total. Netcraft’s October 1 update reported 13,603 registrations in the previous 24 hours—nearly three times the September 23 figure—and a 21.6% increase in the total domain count across its eight-day comparison. It also reported about thirteen times as many new registrations in September as in August. These are dated observations, not a settled daily or monthly rate. (Netcraft, October 1, 2026)

At access on October 2, 2026, Register.si’s English-language live counter displayed 260,534 domains, 46,066 new domains in the previous month, 12,578 in the previous 24 hours, and 92 registrars. The counter updates continuously, so those readings describe what it showed at access time rather than a final October 2 total. (Register.si)

Netcraft also estimated hourly registration activity using its own internet-survey data. Because .si is a country-code top-level domain that is not obligated to publish zone files, those estimated trends are distinct from figures on Register.si’s public counter. Read the measures as complementary observations, not interchangeable counts. (Netcraft, September 24, 2026)

Did Trump’s remarks or order cause the surge?

The sequence alone cannot establish the cause. Netcraft’s September 24 analysis said the initial spike appeared to have begun roughly three days before the UN speech, around the time of a September 19 Trump social-media poll about a possible AI rename. It could not determine whether registrants anticipated an announcement or acted for unrelated reasons. Netcraft later observed that activity more than doubled after the September 29 order compared with the average daily rate between the speech and the order, and that OpusDNS accounted for the sharp acceleration it detected. Those observations do not identify why any individual registered a name.

ARNES spokesperson Klara Herman gave Foreign Policy a similar qualification: “We would, however, be careful about attributing the entire increase to President Trump’s comments. The upward trend was already there before the recent attention around ‘SI,’” she said. “What we can say is that the international discussion around the term has coincided with an exceptional additional surge in interest.” (Foreign Policy, September 28, 2026)

What .si means—and how registration works

.si is Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain. Register.si says end users register through a registrar, which acts as an intermediary between the registrant and the registry; the registry portal itself is not where an individual buys a name. Foreign Policy reported that the registry charged registrars €10 per registration, while the retail price varied by registrar. Its September 2026 report cited one provider’s advertised introductory and renewal prices, but such offers are time-sensitive and should be checked directly rather than treated as current or universal.

Register.si’s published rules say a requested name must be available and not reserved, use permitted characters, contain 2–63 characters, and not begin or end with a hyphen or have two consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions. The registry says domains may be renewed for one to five years. Its page also describes Registry Lock and an Alternative Domain Dispute Resolution (ADR) process. (Register.si registration and dispute information)

Netcraft reported that anyone can register a .si domain, although the registry page cited here does not itself state an eligibility rule for people outside Slovenia. Check the current terms with the registry or registrar before registering.

What registrants and businesses should watch for

A rise in speculative registrations is not, by itself, proof of fraud or trademark infringement. Netcraft found that more than 50% of the .si domains it detected at Dynadot between the September 19 poll and Trump’s UN remarks were listed on Dynadot’s aftermarket when it checked on September 23. That is a limited sample from one registrar and one period, not a measure of all .si registrations. Its October 1 report also described 87 .com domains combining known brand names with “superintelligence,” registered before the executive order and offered for resale. Resale listings may raise concerns, but do not establish that a domain violates a particular party’s rights.

Register.si says a party that believes it has a stronger right to a name can initiate ADR, and that the domain name itself is not an industrial-property right. Registering a name therefore does not automatically override another party’s trademark or other rights. For a business, monitoring relevant domains and acting through appropriate legal channels is more useful than assuming a registration settles ownership.

Netcraft said it had not seen an increase in malicious content such as phishing related to the rename at the time of its October 1 update. Its earlier analysis noted a possible typo risk because “s” and “a” are adjacent on QWERTY keyboards, creating a potential .si/.ai mistype. Neither observation is evidence that the new registrations are malicious.

What the numbers do not establish about Slovenia’s finances

A larger domain count is not the same as a national windfall. Registry fees, registrar retail prices, speculative resale proceeds, renewals, and operating costs are different figures. The available reporting does not provide a final accounting of net financial benefit to Slovenia or ARNES, so the live registration totals cannot be used to calculate one.
