Switch Datacenters bought a former ABN AMRO data center in Woerden, Netherlands, for a reported €11 million in September 2014. The company planned to pair it with its Amsterdam facility as a twin site, connected by direct fiber links for data mirroring. Contemporary coverage said a large cloud provider already leased most of the site, but did not name it.

What Switch bought

Switch Datacenters announced the acquisition on 11 September 2014. The reported €11 million price was for the former ABN AMRO data center in Woerden, west of Utrecht and south of Amsterdam, according to Emerce’s report of the announcement.

The announcement described two buildings with a combined area of approximately 12,500 square metres, including about 5,500 square metres in the data-center building. These are the dimensions reported in 2014, not a current survey of the site.

Why Woerden mattered to Switch

Switch presented the site as a twin data center for its Amsterdam facility. Its plan was to connect the locations with direct fiber links so data could be mirrored between them. The two-site arrangement offered geographic separation and connectivity intended to support customers seeking a twin-site setup, particularly larger cloud environments.

In the announcement, Switch founder and CEO Gregor Snip described the acquisition as an important addition to the company’s offering for larger cloud environments and customers needing twin data-center solutions. His statement used the term “Tier3+” for the building; it is a description in the company’s announcement, not an independently verified assessment of current operations.

“De overname van dit Tier3+ gebouwde datacenter is een belangrijke aanvulling op het productaanbod van Switch Datacenters dat toegespitst is op de grotere cloud-omgevingen en klanten die behoefte hebben aan een twin datacenter oplossingen.”

The announcement and plans are reported by Emerce and Computable. They do not state recovery-time or recovery-point targets, so the planned mirroring should not be read as a quantified guarantee about how quickly systems could be restored or how much data could be recovered.

Who was using the facility?

Contemporary coverage reported that a large cloud provider leased most of the facility, but did not identify the tenant. The tenant’s name cannot be established from those reports, so it would be speculation to assign the lease to a particular company.

What is known about the Woerden site today

The Dutch Data Center Association’s Switch Datacenters profile currently lists AMS2 at Polanerbaan 1 in Woerden and says Switch operates three active data centers. That confirms a Switch location is listed in Woerden; it does not establish the site’s present capacity, tenant, ownership structure, configuration, or performance.

Although reports at the time also described planned upgrades and efficiency improvements, the available coverage does not establish which plans were completed or what results they achieved. The acquisition’s price, dimensions, tenant arrangement, and twin-site strategy are historical details from 2014, not a complete description of the facility today.
