Equinix’s Tokyo expansion story refers to a September 3, 2010 plan to add capacity at TY2, not a new 2026 project. The company announced a $9 million investment for 140 cabinet equivalents, with completion scheduled for Q4 2010 and total Tokyo capacity projected to reach 1,600 cabinet equivalents.

What Equinix announced for TY2

In its September 3, 2010 announcement, Equinix said it would expand TY2, its second International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Tokyo. The company described the work as a $9 million investment adding 140 cabinet equivalents. It scheduled completion for Q4 2010 and projected that the project would bring Equinix’s total Tokyo capacity to 1,600 cabinet equivalents. These are announcement-era plans and figures, not confirmation that the work finished on schedule or a statement of current available capacity. Equinix’s 2010 announcement

Why Equinix said it was adding capacity

Equinix attributed the expansion to demand from cloud and IT service providers, content companies, and financial firms doing business in Japan. Its release described a connected Tokyo ecosystem: TY1 and TY2 were linked directly by fiber, and the company said its Tokyo facilities had more than 50 international and domestic carriers and networks at the time. Equinix also said the top three internet exchanges in Japan, including Equinix Exchange, were present in its Tokyo IBX facilities. Those are descriptions made by Equinix in 2010, not current network counts or independently measured market data. Equinix’s 2010 announcement

The release also said Tokyo Financial Exchanges Inc. and Tokyo Commodity Exchange had selected Equinix as a preferred data-center colocation provider. That designation is part of the company’s 2010 account; it should not be read as evidence of either exchange’s current provider status.

How the TY2 plan fits into later Tokyo development

Equinix announced later projects at other Tokyo facilities. They are separate developments, and their capacity figures use different measures; cabinet counts should not be compared directly with power capacity in megawatts.

What the announcement means for readers evaluating infrastructure

The 2010 news is useful as a dated account of Equinix’s Tokyo footprint strategy: adding cabinet capacity, connecting facilities by fiber, and serving customers that Equinix identified as cloud, IT, content, and financial businesses. It is not a current price quote, availability check, or independent measure of Tokyo data-center demand. Anyone evaluating colocation or interconnection today would need current facility, service, pricing, and capacity information directly from the provider.
