Toshiba Memory announced its new name, Kioxia, on July 18, 2019; the corporate name change took effect on October 1, 2019. Kioxia is the continuing memory-solutions business under a new identity—not an unrelated storage company. Retail products moved to the KIOXIA brand in stages, with products released from 2020 carrying the new branding.

What is the relationship between Toshiba Memory and Kioxia?

Kioxia is the new corporate identity of the former Toshiba Memory business. The company’s launch materials described the renamed entity as formerly Toshiba Memory Corporation and presented the change as a continuation of its memory-solutions business, not the creation of an unrelated storage startup.

The company said its focus would remain on flash memory and SSDs. Its history reaches back to 1987, the year it identifies as the year it invented NAND flash memory.

When did Toshiba Memory become Kioxia?

Toshiba Memory announced the name Kioxia on July 18, 2019. The corporate change took effect on October 1, 2019. Those dates refer to the announcement and the corporate identity change, respectively.

What does the name Kioxia mean?

Kioxia combines kioku, the Japanese word for “memory,” and axia, a Greek word for “value.” The company chose the name to express the idea of memory and value together.

Are Toshiba- and KIOXIA-branded storage products the same?

The branding changed over time, but the name change alone does not establish that products with different labels have identical specifications. Toshiba Memory said consumer SSDs, SD cards and USB flash memory would continue under the Toshiba Memory brand through 2019, with products released from 2020 moving to the KIOXIA brand. During the transition, Toshiba- and KIOXIA-branded labels could appear in parallel; SSD label changes began on October 1, 2019.

  • Random read/write up to (IOPS): 355K/365K
  • Compatibility: all systems supporting M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe Gen3 x4

If you are comparing a Toshiba-labeled device with a KIOXIA model, check the exact model numbers and product specifications rather than assuming they are interchangeable. Capacity, interface, form factor, endurance and warranty are model-specific details; the rebranding announcements do not say that the name change altered them.

What should buyers take from the rebrand?

  • A KIOXIA label identifies the new brand for the continuing business; it does not by itself indicate a different storage technology or a particular performance level.
  • A Toshiba Memory label can reflect an earlier product release or stock still using the previous branding.
  • For a purchase or upgrade, use the manufacturer’s information for the specific model to confirm compatibility, specifications and warranty terms.
