ElasticBox was an enterprise software company whose platform helped teams deploy and manage multi-tier applications across cloud environments. It launched publicly in June 2013 with a reported $3.4 million seed round and named prominent technology companies as customers. CenturyLink announced its acquisition of ElasticBox in June 2016.

What was ElasticBox?

Founded in 2011, ElasticBox built a DevOps platform for application delivery and cloud operations. The company described its software as a way to streamline the development, deployment and management of multi-tier applications across clouds. Despite the phrase “cloud in a box” in launch coverage, ElasticBox was a software platform—not a consumer appliance.

In a 2014 company description, ElasticBox framed the product around moving applications through development and deployment and managing them across cloud environments. The company’s archived overview is available at ElasticBox.

Who founded ElasticBox, and who invested?

Ravi Srivatsav was a co-founder and CEO, and Alberto Arias Maestro was also a co-founder. The company’s June 2013 launch was reported alongside a $3.4 million seed round by the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Investor lists differ across reports and may reflect different descriptions or stages of investment. Seedtable’s 2013 entry lists a16z seed, AngelPad, Intel Capital, Sierra Ventures and Nexus Venture Partners among ElasticBox’s investors. The Economic Times later reported Rs 53 crore of combined investment from Nexus Venture Partners and Intel Capital in 2014; that figure is a separate report and should not be added to the 2013 dollar-denominated round as though both described one funding event.

Which companies used ElasticBox?

ElasticBox’s technical overview named Netflix, Genentech, DeNA, Splunk and Rightster as customers. Those public names indicate the range of organizations associated with its enterprise positioning, but they do not establish the size, terms or current status of any customer relationship.

What happened to ElasticBox?

On June 14, 2016, CenturyLink announced that it had acquired ElasticBox. CenturyLink said the acquisition would expand its multi-cloud services-management and hybrid-IT capabilities. The announcement marked ElasticBox’s transition from an independent startup into a larger service provider’s technology portfolio; it does not, by itself, establish which product features or customer arrangements continued afterward.
