Nasdaq’s Cloud Shift Keeps Carteret, New Jersey at the Center

Nasdaq’s move to AWS is phased, not a departure from New Jersey: Carteret remains central to its U.S. market infrastructure, with no blanket promise of disruption-free trading.

Nasdaq is moving exchange systems to cloud infrastructure in phases, not closing its New Jersey market hub. Its published architecture keeps its primary data center at Equinix NY11 in Carteret and adds cloud capabilities nearby through AWS Outposts. Nasdaq describes this approach as a way to combine cloud flexibility with proximity to exchange systems; it does not establish that traders will never face disruption or operational friction.

What Nasdaq is moving—and what it is keeping

Nasdaq’s cloud initiative concerns exchange systems and related infrastructure, not a single overnight move of every market or the abandonment of physical data centers. The company announced a phased migration of North American markets to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2021, initially naming its MRX options market. Nasdaq’s cloud overview lists MRX and the Nasdaq Bond Exchange as moved to AWS in 2022, and GEMX as the second U.S. options exchange moved in 2023. Nasdaq says market modernization is continuing beyond those milestones.

At the same time, Nasdaq identifies Equinix NY11 in Carteret, New Jersey, as its primary data center and describes it as central to its U.S. markets and cloud infrastructure. The architecture is therefore better understood as cloud services combined with nearby physical and edge infrastructure—not as Nasdaq leaving New Jersey.

Why keep infrastructure in Carteret?

Exchange systems and market participants depend on fast communication, so the location of computing infrastructure remains relevant even when workloads use cloud services. Nasdaq’s 2021 announcement described AWS Outposts at its Carteret data center, placing AWS infrastructure close to Nasdaq’s core network. The stated design aim was to bring cloud capabilities to the edge while preserving proximity to exchange systems.

Nasdaq’s 2025 modernization blueprint discusses proximity and latency alongside resilience, security, regulatory obligations, and flexibility. These are competing operational considerations, not a claim that one deployment model is best for every exchange or participant. Cloud, edge infrastructure, and colocation can each fit different requirements; Nasdaq’s description presents a combination intended to serve its own market environment.

What has moved so far, and what remains planned?

Do the reported results mean traders avoid hassle?

No general guarantee follows from the available announcements. Nasdaq’s MRX migration announcement reported “low double-digit microseconds” latency for end-to-end and order-to-trade processes, along with a 10% improvement in round-trip latency. Those are Nasdaq-reported outcomes for that particular migration; they are not independent measurements, a promise for other markets, or evidence that every participant experienced a friction-free change. Nasdaq’s cloud overview also gives historical scale figures for its 2020–2021 cloud-strategy period: 60 billion messages through market systems and more than 200 billion records into Nasdaq Data Warehouse. It says cloud technology enabled it to process four times as much message traffic as five years earlier, in the context of milestones from 2022–2024. These are company-published historical figures, not independent audits or current throughput measurements. Nasdaq cloud overview

In the original partnership announcement, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman said the partnership “seeks to power a truly cloud-based market infrastructure that is more resilient, scalable, and accessible for all market participants.” That wording describes the partnership’s goal; it is not proof that every migration achieved each outcome. What this means for market participants

For traders and firms, the main takeaway is architectural rather than a guarantee about day-to-day experience: Nasdaq is modernizing exchange systems while retaining a primary physical hub in Carteret and using edge infrastructure to keep cloud services near its market network. Nasdaq’s stated design considerations include latency, resilience, security, regulatory requirements, and capacity flexibility. The company’s announcements support those as aims and describe specific completed migrations, but they do not establish that all systems have moved, that every participant’s setup is unchanged, or that future transitions will involve no disruption.
