DoNotPay can help organize routine consumer tasks such as subscription cancellations, refund requests, chargeback paperwork, privacy requests and civic reports—but it is not a law firm, its results are not guaranteed, and it should not replace a licensed lawyer on a high-stakes matter. The service describes itself as an AI-powered consumer self-help platform. Its homepage currently claims more than 100 tools and says it has helped consumers since 2015.
What DoNotPay actually is
DoNotPay presents itself as an AI consumer champion rather than a legal practice. Its stated purpose is to help people deal with corporations, protect privacy, find money they may be owed and navigate bureaucracy. The company’s learning center organizes tools around subscription cancellation, refunds and chargebacks, free trials, city repairs, corporate complaints and administrative forms.
DoNotPay’s own homepage says: “DoNotPay is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. DoNotPay provides a platform for legal information and self-help.” Its About page describes a service operating since 2015, including airline-refund assistance, COVID-era rent or bill extensions, pothole and fallen-tree reports, and a 2022 chatbot intended to interact with customer-service representatives.

DoNotPay states that outcomes are not guaranteed. A generated letter can make a request clearer, but it cannot compel a merchant, bank or public agency to agree. Keep copies of the original bill, cancellation terms, receipts, messages and submission confirmations so you can prove what happened and when.
Can it get your money back or cancel a subscription?
Subscription cancellation
For a straightforward subscription, the main value is convenience: identifying the cancellation route, producing a request and helping you document it. You should still check the merchant’s account page or confirmation email yourself. If billing continues, contact the merchant promptly and notify your card issuer when appropriate; do not assume that using an automated cancellation workflow ended the contract or stopped a future charge.

Refund requests
A refund request is a negotiation, not an entitlement created by DoNotPay. Your result depends on the seller’s terms, the facts and the evidence you provide. A well-organized timeline and copies of relevant promises or receipts are more useful than an aggressive template that makes claims you cannot support.
Chargebacks
A chargeback is a bank or card-network process. DoNotPay may help assemble the dispute, but the issuer decides whether the transaction fits its rules. Describe the facts accurately; filing a dispute for a purchase you authorized can create additional problems with your bank or merchant account.

Is DoNotPay a real AI lawyer?
No. DoNotPay says it is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Treat its output as self-help information or a draft that requires your own review, not as an attorney’s judgment or representation in court.
The Federal Trade Commission challenged stronger marketing claims. In a September 25, 2024 announcement, the FTC said DoNotPay had marketed an “AI lawyer” and claims including that users could “sue for assault without a lawyer,” create “perfectly valid legal documents in no time,” and replace the “$200-billion-dollar legal industry with artificial intelligence.” The agency alleged that DoNotPay had not tested whether its output performed at a human-lawyer level and had not hired or retained attorneys to test the quality and accuracy of law-related features.

The FTC finalized an order in January 2025 and announced it on February 11, 2025. The order requires $193,000 in monetary relief, notice to consumers who subscribed between 2021 and 2023, and an end to advertising that DoNotPay performs like a real lawyer unless the company has sufficient evidence. The FTC’s case materials summarize the restriction this way: “Unless we have sufficient evidence to back it up, we can’t advertise that DoNotPay acts like a real lawyer.” The earlier “$200 billion” figure was a quoted marketing claim in the FTC announcement, not a verified valuation of the legal industry.
How to judge whether a task is suitable
Use these five checks before submitting anything:
- Match the task. Routine cancellations, refund letters, chargeback organization, privacy requests, civic reports and basic forms fit the categories DoNotPay documents. A question requiring legal strategy does not.
- Assume the text is a draft. Check names, dates, amounts, contract clauses and legal references against your records. The FTC findings provide no basis for treating the output as lawyer-level work.
- Review permissions. Identify every personal, account, payment or bank detail the workflow requests. DoNotPay’s terms say payment or bank access may be used to process subscriptions, external fees or recovered money.
- Check renewal terms. The terms say subscription services renew for additional periods and should be canceled at least 48 hours before renewal. Features and availability can change.
- Set an escalation point. If the issue involves a court deadline, immigration status, housing loss, criminal exposure, a large financial loss or a legal right you cannot afford to lose, stop relying on an automated tool and contact a licensed attorney or qualified legal-aid provider.
How to use DoNotPay with less risk
- Define the outcome. Write down whether you want a cancellation, a refund, a card dispute, a records request or an agency report. Note the deadline and the amount at stake.
- Collect primary evidence first. Save invoices, terms, screenshots, emails, delivery records and prior support conversations before starting the workflow.
- Read the data request. Provide only what is necessary. Pay particular attention when a task asks for account credentials, payment details or bank access, and understand why that access is needed.
- Review every generated statement. Correct factual errors, remove unsupported legal conclusions and make sure the message identifies the right merchant, dates and transaction.
- Submit through a verifiable channel. Keep the sent message, confirmation number and timestamp. Check directly with the merchant, bank or agency rather than relying only on an in-app status.
- Escalate when the response changes the stakes. A denial, threatened collection, court paper, eviction notice, immigration notice or criminal allegation calls for professional advice, not repeated automated templates.
What the service costs and what can change
No stable current price or independent success-rate benchmark is established in the available primary materials. DoNotPay’s terms state that subscription services renew for additional periods and that cancellation should occur at least 48 hours before renewal. They also warn that features and availability can change. Check the price, billing frequency, renewal date and cancellation method displayed at signup, and save the confirmation.

- A filing deadline, hearing, lawsuit or demand letter is already pending.
- Your immigration status, housing, employment, family rights or personal liberty is at risk.
- The potential loss is substantial enough that a wrong argument or missed deadline would be hard to reverse.
- You need legal advice tailored to facts that do not fit a standard form.
- You are unsure whether a statement to a court, regulator, insurer or law-enforcement agency is accurate.
For those situations, contact a licensed attorney or a reputable legal-aid organization in your jurisdiction. DoNotPay can still be a source of administrative organization, but it should not be treated as your representative or legal adviser.
