IBM’s enterprise-AI opportunity for partners is a channel-growth strategy, not simply a promise to sell more software. In a 2024 CRN interview, CEO Arvind Krishna said IBM wanted 50% of its revenue to come through partners within two to three years, up from about 30% of total revenue in 2023. That was a stated goal, not a subsequently verified result. The strategy depends on partners delivering integration, modernization, managed services and industry-specific AI in hybrid and multicloud environments.
What IBM’s channel opportunity was in 2024
CRN reported that IBM’s channel-generated sales had increased from the low-20% range to about 30% of total revenue in 2023. Krishna said IBM wanted that share to reach 50% over the following two to three years. The figures describe a historical interview account and an ambition; they do not establish that IBM achieved the target.
Krishna characterized the enterprise market as “massive” because companies need help connecting AI to existing systems, data and regulated workflows. CRN also reported that he followed McKinsey research estimating that generative AI could create up to $4.4 trillion in annual global corporate-profit value, including as much as $340 billion in banking and $660 billion in retail and consumer packaged goods. Those are estimates attributed to McKinsey by CRN, not independently verified results in this article.
Why IBM wants partners involved
Enterprise implementation is a services problem
Large organizations rarely deploy AI as a standalone chatbot. They must integrate models with mainframes, databases, identity systems, business applications and compliance controls. Partners can provide the architecture, migration, customization, training and ongoing operations that a software vendor cannot deliver alone at every customer.

Products are supposed to be channel-friendly
Krishna said, “Any new product has to be channel-friendly.” In the CRN account, that meant designing offerings so partners could sell and implement them, rather than treating the channel as an afterthought. He also said, “It’s economically rational to work well with the channel.”
What IBM described for Partner Plus
CRN described IBM Partner Plus as aligning seller goals, certifications and badges with IBM products. The account also mentioned partner access to training, trials, demonstrations, technical staff and innovation labs, along with partner-oriented pricing and packaging. A service-specific track was reported, and IBM said it wanted a broader ecosystem spanning resellers, services-led firms and technically specialized companies.

Those details describe the program as reported in 2024. Partner benefits, enrollment rules, geography, incentives and commercial terms can change. IBM’s 2026 Partner Plus coverage presents the program around sell, build and service partners, integrated partner motions, marketplace routes and joint client outcomes, but it does not by itself confirm eligibility or incentive amounts.
Enterprise AI services partners can sell
Contact-center improvement
Partners can help redesign customer-service operations with AI-assisted agents, knowledge retrieval, workflow automation and human escalation. The commercial work includes process mapping, data preparation, security configuration, integration with customer-service systems and measurement of resolution time and customer satisfaction.

Code generation and legacy modernization
One prominent use case in the CRN interview was using AI to assist modernization of COBOL and other legacy languages. A partner engagement may include code discovery, test generation, documentation, refactoring, API creation and staged migration. The value is not merely generated code; it is reducing the risk and labor involved in changing systems that still run critical business processes.
Wealth-management product selection
AI can help wealth managers compare products and recommendations against client objectives, restrictions and market information. Partners would need to connect the system to approved data, enforce suitability and compliance rules, and preserve an auditable record of recommendations.

Fraud detection and claims automation
CRN cited partner work involving real-time fraud detection and claims processing. NucleusTeq executive Will Sellenraad described a proof of concept that moved a claims process from fully manual toward 60% automation. That is one partner-reported proof of concept, not a generally demonstrated IBM outcome or a guarantee for future projects.
Real-time data and mainframe-to-cloud connections
Other examples included making live data available to traders and connecting mainframe data with cloud applications. Partners can monetize data integration, event streaming, API management, observability, security and operations around those connections. The difficult work is usually ensuring that data is timely, authorized and governed—not merely making it accessible.

How the 2026 IBM context changes the picture
IBM’s May 5, 2026 enterprise-AI announcement describes an operating model built around agents, connected data, automation, hybrid operations and governance. It names the next generation of watsonx Orchestrate, Confluent-related data capabilities, IBM Concert and IBM Sovereign Core.
The announcement distinguishes private-preview features from generally available offerings. Therefore, a partner evaluating a project must check the status of the specific capability, region and edition rather than treating every item in the portfolio as immediately deployable.
Krishna summarized the operating-model argument in 2026: “The enterprises pulling ahead are not deploying more AI – they’re redesigning how their business operates.” He also said, “Running AI in the enterprise requires a new operating model, and IBM is enabling organizations to manage AI-driven systems with the same rigor, governance, and scale as their most critical infrastructure.”

| Partner type | Likely work | Revenue opportunity | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reseller or marketplace partner | License, package and coordinate IBM offerings | Product resale plus attached implementation | Needs credible delivery capacity and a clear customer use case |
| Services-led integrator | Modernization, data integration, workflow redesign and managed operations | Project fees, recurring services and support | Long sales cycles, scarce technical talent and measurable-ROI requirements |
| Specialist technology partner | Connect a focused capability such as fraud, data, security or industry software | Joint solutions and specialized services | Interoperability, certification and responsibility for production support |
How to evaluate an IBM AI partner opportunity
- Define the business process. Specify the workflow to improve, the baseline cost or delay, and the decision that AI will assist or automate.
- Map the data estate. Identify mainframe, on-premises, IBM cloud and other-cloud data sources, along with access rights, quality and latency requirements.
- Check capability status. Confirm whether the IBM product feature is generally available, private preview or restricted by region or edition.
- Assign governance ownership. Establish who handles model risk, privacy, security, audit logs, human review and regulatory obligations.
- Build a measurable pilot. Use metrics such as processing time, error rate, fraud losses, service resolution or modernization effort—not a generic AI adoption score.
- Model delivery economics. Include IBM licensing, cloud or infrastructure costs, integration labor, change management, support and the cost of maintaining data and models.
- Verify Partner Plus terms directly. Confirm current eligibility, certifications, benefits, marketplace routes and any applicable commercial arrangements before committing resources.
What is established—and what is not
- Established by the 2024 CRN account: IBM reported channel-generated sales at about 30% of total revenue in 2023, a 50% channel-revenue goal over two to three years, and the enterprise use cases described above.
- Not established by that account: that IBM reached 50%, that every partner receives the same benefits, or that a quoted proof of concept represents typical customer results.
- Established by the 2026 IBM announcements: a broader focus on agents, connected data, hybrid operations and governance, with availability differing by feature.
- Not established by the 2026 Partner Plus coverage: enrollment eligibility, incentive amounts, geography-specific terms or any referral or affiliate opportunity.
Bottom line for prospective partners
IBM’s pitch is that enterprise AI creates more value when partners make it usable inside real businesses. The largest opportunity is therefore in integration, modernization, governance and recurring operations around IBM technology—not in reselling an isolated model. The 50% channel figure remains a historical target until IBM reports verifiable results, and any partner should validate current Partner Plus terms and product availability before treating the opportunity as a forecast.
