A 2024 Nevada incentive application projects about $742.1 million in capital-equipment spending over five years, while Apple separately described a goal of investing another $1 billion in the Reno facility over the following decade. Reno’s 2026 data-center moratorium raises questions about future permitting, but the city has not stated how it applies to Apple’s already-filed expansion.
What is Apple building in Reno?
The project is an expansion of Apple’s existing private data center at 21505 Reno Technology Parkway West in Sparks, Washoe County, part of the Reno area. Apple’s 2024 Nevada incentive application describes the facility’s work as processing, storing and transporting data for services including iCloud, Maps, Siri and Music.
Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) minutes say Apple opened the Reno-area facility in December 2012, the first company to build a data center at Reno Technology Park. The expansion is therefore additional infrastructure at an established site, rather than a newly announced first facility.
How much is Apple investing?
The figures describe two different scopes and levels of certainty; they should not be treated as interchangeable commitments.
#1 Best Overall
| Figure | What it describes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Approximately $742,071,428 | Capital-equipment expenditures for the expansion within its first five years | Projected in Apple’s 2024 Nevada incentive application; GOED minutes rounded the projection to $742.1 million. |
| Another $1 billion | Investment in the Reno data center and facility over the decade ahead | Apple representative Rod Diridon told the GOED board in 2024 that Apple was seeking this investment. It is a company-stated plan, not a guaranteed outturn. |
The five-year figure is the more specific projection recorded in the incentive application. The decade-long figure is a broader statement of intent about investment in the data center and facility, not a revised five-year equipment estimate.
How many jobs and what supports the facility?
Apple’s 2024 incentive application projects 10 new full-time employees at an average wage of $32.51 per hour. That is the projected job addition associated with the expansion; it is distinct from the existing operation’s support workforce.

In the same 2024 GOED minutes, Apple’s representative said more than 200 people support the facility and that Apple had invested more than $3 billion in data-center operations to date. The minutes also record Apple’s statement that the site has operated on 100% renewable energy since opening, through four Apple-created solar projects developed with NV Energy. These figures and operating details are statements recorded from Apple’s representative, not independent measurements in the minutes.
Is the expansion still underway?
Apple’s August 6, 2025 U.S. investment release said: “Apple is also expanding data center capacity in states across the country, with construction underway in Iowa, Nevada, and Oregon.” Nevada is the state-level reference; the release does not name the Reno site, specify its capacity or give a completion date. It is the latest official project-status statement identified here, not evidence that construction remains active or that the expansion is complete in October 2026.

Does Reno’s data-center moratorium stop Apple’s project?
Reno’s official update says City Council approved a final moratorium resolution on June 1, 2026. The moratorium runs through August 31, 2027, or until adequate regulations are adopted, and the city says it will not accept new conditional-use-permit requests for data centers during that period.
The city also began a Title 18 land-development-code text-amendment process on April 22, 2026, with the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency leading stakeholder engagement and research. The cited municipal update does not say whether Apple’s already-filed expansion is grandfathered, exempt, or otherwise affected. Because Apple had stated that construction was underway in Nevada in 2025, the moratorium is a relevant permitting development, but the available city statement does not establish that it halted Apple’s work.
