VMware’s shift to subscriptions, broader bundles and a reshaped partner model prompted customers to reassess their options. Existing three- to five-year agreements, complex application dependencies and migration risk mean the market is more likely to move through renewals, pilots and dual-platform deployments over several years.
This article examines a May 29, 2024 Nutanix article based on an April 2024 Bloomberg Tech Disruptors interview with CEO Rajiv Ramaswami. CIO republished it on November 4, 2024 as a Nutanix-sponsored BrandPost, so its forecasts should be read as company positioning rather than independent proof of customer behavior.
What Broadcom changed after acquiring VMware
Broadcom completed its VMware acquisition in late 2023. Its announced commercial changes included a move to subscription licensing, the end of sales of perpetual licenses and related support renewals, and a simplified product lineup. VMware increasingly presented capabilities through broader offerings such as VMware vSphere Foundation and VMware Cloud Foundation rather than the previous menu of separately purchased products. See Broadcom’s explanation of the licensing transition at Broadcom’s licensing announcement.
For customers, the practical issues were not limited to a price increase. They included difficulty comparing old perpetual-license economics with new subscriptions, paying for bundled functions that might not be needed, changes to reseller and partner relationships, uncertainty about support and road maps, and questions about VMware’s cloud partnerships. Some of those concerns were reported by Nutanix and its quoted analysts; they should not be treated as a universal finding about every VMware contract.

Ramaswami’s thesis was that VMware customers would reassess their platforms as existing agreements expired. Nutanix’s original account is available at Nutanix’s May 29, 2024 article.

Contracts spread decisions over time
Ramaswami said some customers had signed three- to five-year agreements before the acquisition closed. That is not a universal contract duration, but it explains why a commercial shock would not produce an overnight exit. Renewal dates, budget cycles and procurement reviews arrive at different times.
Customers can reduce risk without replacing everything
A company can deploy Nutanix for a new business unit, a data-center refresh or a greenfield application while retaining VMware for established workloads. It can also run both platforms, use a competitive evaluation to negotiate a renewal, or move only selected applications. Nutanix therefore had several ways to gain business before a full replacement.

Partners and services create a second opportunity
Migration requires inventory, dependency mapping, testing, data protection, cutover planning and staff training. Partners displaced or deprioritized by VMware’s channel changes could also seek additional relationships. Nutanix’s article mentioned increased engagement with VMware partners, a Wipro Nutanix business unit and customer examples; those claims come from Nutanix and are not an audited partner census or independent market study.
The market-size claim is Nutanix’s estimate
Ramaswami described an approximately $76 billion total addressable market covering software-defined compute, storage and networking. That figure is Nutanix’s estimate, not an independently established market total.

Why a VMware migration is difficult
Changing hypervisors is an operating-model project, not a simple software installation. Before approving a move, an enterprise must examine:
- VM inventory, hardware dependencies and specialized GPU or passthrough requirements.
- Application clustering, failover behavior, latency and maintenance-window limits.
- Storage, networking, distributed-switching, microsegmentation and security integrations.
- Backup, disaster-recovery orchestration, replication and rollback procedures.
- Infrastructure-as-code, automation, monitoring and observability tools.
- Licenses embedded in databases, appliances, operating systems and third-party products.
- Staff skills, operational runbooks, compliance obligations and vendor-support commitments.
Nutanix-related analyst coverage cautioned that migration can be technically challenging and that long subscription cycles make a sudden mass migration unlikely. A reported 90-day migration at a smaller public healthcare customer is a customer example, not a standard duration or guarantee.

What Nutanix is actually offering
Nutanix positions itself as an integrated infrastructure and hybrid-cloud operating environment, not merely as a replacement hypervisor. Its stack combines compute, storage, networking, virtualization, management, containers, resilience, disaster recovery and security. The company’s current Cloud Platform software options describe Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI), including the AHV hypervisor, in Starter, Pro and Ultimate editions.
For the NCI model described on that page, core licensing is based on physical CPU-core capacity and can be purchased for one- to five-year terms. Separate VDI licensing uses maximum concurrent users, while an edge model uses per-VM licensing for small clusters. Those different metrics make a single “cost per license” comparison misleading.

Hybrid-cloud positioning
Nutanix argues that customers need infrastructure spanning private data centers, public clouds and edge locations. Its Enterprise Cloud Index survey of 1,500 IT, DevOps and platform-engineering decision-makers reported that more than 80% viewed hybrid IT as beneficial and that nearly half identified implementation as a CIO priority. These are Nutanix-sponsored survey findings, not neutral industry measurements.
Operating across environments does not guarantee identical functionality, performance, networking, security, support or licensing. Buyers must test the exact workload and destination rather than assume that portability means frictionless movement.
What VMware customers may actually do
- Renew VMware. A negotiated renewal may be cheaper and safer than a rushed migration.
- Renew a smaller VMware footprint. New workloads can go elsewhere while critical legacy systems remain.
- Deploy Nutanix for new projects. This creates experience with AHV and Prism without immediate wholesale change.
- Run VMware and Nutanix together. Dual platforms can reduce concentration risk but add operational complexity.
- Migrate selected workloads. Less coupled applications are usually better pilot candidates than deeply integrated systems.
- Replace more broadly at renewal. A wider migration becomes more practical when contracts, hardware and staffing align.
- Use hosted VMware or another platform. Azure VMware Solution, HPE Morpheus VM Essentials, Proxmox VE, Microsoft platforms and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization serve different needs.
How to compare the economics
Do not compare a VMware license quote with a Nutanix software quote in isolation. Normalize the same term, capacity, support level and workload scope, then include:
- License metric: physical cores, virtual machines, concurrent users or another unit.
- Hardware purchase, refresh cycle, warranty and capacity headroom.
- Storage, networking, management, backup and disaster-recovery capabilities.
- Migration assessment, consulting, testing, downtime and rollback provisions.
- Training, recruiting and the cost of operating two platforms during transition.
- Cloud infrastructure, data-transfer and egress charges for hosted deployments.
- Renewal assumptions, price protection, minimum commitments and termination terms.
Nutanix says specific NC2 pricing requires a quote; its NC2 pricing page is therefore not a universal price list. The Azure Marketplace NC2 listing displayed example US bare-metal PAYG signals of $4.992 per hour per node for one AN36 configuration and $5.4912 for one AN36P configuration. Those figures are region-, configuration- and date-sensitive, and Azure infrastructure charges are separate from Nutanix licensing.
Decision guide: stay, switch or diversify
| Path | May fit when | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Stay with VMware/Broadcom | Applications are deeply integrated with vSphere, vSAN, NSX or VMware tools; a long agreement is already in place; migration risk is unacceptable. | Subscription bundles, reduced component choice and continued ecosystem dependence. |
| Nutanix NCI/AHV | The buyer wants an integrated compute, storage, virtualization and management platform and can migrate in phases. | Quote-based enterprise software, hardware and training costs, redesigned integrations and a different form of platform dependence. |
| HPE Morpheus VM Essentials | The organization is HPE-aligned or wants multivendor management and a transition platform. | Term subscription, quote-based pricing and the need to validate exact integrations and migration tooling. See HPE’s product information and solution brief. |
| Proxmox VE | The environment is smaller or cost-sensitive and the team has strong Linux and virtualization skills. | More in-house integration and operational responsibility; not a like-for-like VMware ecosystem. See Proxmox subscription pricing. |
| Azure VMware Solution | The organization wants Azure capacity while retaining VMware compatibility. | VMware dependence remains, and cloud compute, storage, networking and egress can make steady-state workloads expensive. Microsoft says pricing varies by agreement and commercial arrangement at its pricing page. |
Questions to put in every vendor evaluation
- Which exact products, features and support levels are included?
- What is the license metric, and how does it change at renewal?
- Are storage, networking, management, backup and disaster recovery included?
- Which applications, APIs, snapshots or hardware integrations cannot move without redesign?
- What hardware, cloud and connectivity prerequisites apply?
- Which customer references match our workload, scale and regulatory requirements?
- What is the pilot success threshold, rollback plan and maintenance-window requirement?
- What is the normalized three- and five-year total cost, including migration and training?
What the original forecast proves—and what it does not
The Nutanix article documents a persuasive strategic argument: Broadcom’s commercial restructuring gave competitors a chance to enter accounts at renewal, during new deployments and through partner-led migrations. It does not independently establish that VMware customers were leaving at scale. The article was written by Nutanix, and CIO’s version is labeled a BrandPost; its customer examples, partner estimates and migration claims should be attributed accordingly.
As of August 16, 2026, the “multi-year opportunity” remains best treated as a record of Nutanix’s 2024 outlook, not a current market forecast. Determining whether it materialized requires later Nutanix results, VMware/Broadcom product and licensing developments, customer migration data and comparable pricing—none of which can be inferred from the original interview alone.
