Digital Realty’s 2013 Ashburn Expansion Plan: What Was Announced

Digital Realty’s 2013 Ashburn announcement proposed a 400,000-square-foot data center, at least $150 million in investment by 2015 and 50 jobs. A 2014 company plan later outlined a broader four-building development.

Digital Realty announced plans in July 2013 for a 400,000-square-foot data center at its Digital Loudoun campus in Ashburn, Virginia. The company said it expected to invest at least $150 million by 2015 and create 50 jobs. Those are historical targets, not confirmation that the facility was completed on that schedule or that it has those specifications today.

What Digital Realty announced in 2013

Data Center Knowledge reported on July 11, 2013, that Digital Realty planned the 400,000-square-foot facility at its Digital Loudoun campus. The announcement included an expected investment of at least $150 million by 2015 and 50 planned jobs. The report also attributed more than 5 million square feet of data-center space in Loudoun County to local officials at the time. Read the July 2013 report.

The article described the proposal as the eighth data center at Digital Realty’s Loudoun County campus. It also quoted a county official saying the planned facility would ultimately house 22 data centers. Those counts refer to different descriptions in the report; the 22 may mean internal data-center suites within the planned building, rather than 22 separate campus buildings.

How the project fit into the later campus plan

Digital Realty’s fourth-quarter 2014 financial supplement described a larger Loudoun Parkway North development plan spanning four buildings: G, K, H and J. The company’s plan specified 1,137,147 rentable square feet, 62 Turn-Key Flex data centers and 73.7 MW of IT load. It also said a dedicated substation could supply 150 MW. These are figures from the company’s 2014 plan, not verified current capacity. See Digital Realty’s fourth-quarter 2014 financial supplement.

The 400,000-square-foot figure describes the proposed individual facility in the 2013 report, while the 2014 supplement covers a four-building campus development plan. Rentable area, IT load, and counts of data centers or suites measure different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What the 2014 status labels mean

In that supplement, Buildings G and K were listed as active development, with work described on G’s second phase and K’s shell. Buildings H and J were future development dependent on market demand. These are dated status labels only; they do not establish what was built or is operating now.

What the historical figures do—and do not—show

The announcement and later plan document show the scale of Digital Realty’s proposed expansion and how it was incorporated into a broader development concept. They do not establish whether the specific 400,000-square-foot proposal was completed under its original specifications, whether the investment and jobs targets were met, or the present operational status or capacity of that building. The current Northern Virginia page supplies regional figures, but they cannot be used as a substitute for building-specific confirmation.
