Equinix said the deal added six facilities—five in Tokyo and one in Osaka—to its Japan platform.
How the Bit-isle acquisition closed
Equinix’s original timetable was an expectation, not the final closing date. The company announced a cash tender offer on September 8, 2015, and said completion was expected by early 2016 if its conditions were met. The deal instead proceeded through three milestones:
- September 8, 2015 — tender offer announced. Equinix said its Japanese subsidiary would offer JPY 922 per share for all issued and outstanding Bit-isle shares. The announced transaction value was JPY 33.3 billion, approximately US$280 million at the time. One stated condition was tenders representing more than two-thirds of the shares. These were the offer’s announced terms, not a separately confirmed final purchase price. Equinix’s September announcement.
- November 3, 2015 — tender offer completed. Equinix reported acquiring approximately 97% of Bit-isle’s equity interests, including stock options. It said it would begin consolidating Bit-isle’s financial results as of November 2 and expected to acquire the remaining shares by year-end. Equinix’s tender-offer completion notice.
- December 9, 2015 — remaining shares acquired. Equinix announced that it had completed the acquisition of Bit-isle’s remaining outstanding shares. The company then described Bit-isle’s six facilities as part of its platform in Japan. Equinix’s final acquisition announcement.
At the September announcement, Equinix president and CEO Steve Smith said, “With the acquisition of Bit-isle, Equinix will be in a strong position to attract Japanese enterprises.” The statement reflects the company’s rationale at the time, rather than an independent assessment of the deal’s results.
Where the acquired data centers were
Equinix said Bit-isle brought five facilities in Tokyo and one in Osaka. The company described them as close to its existing Japanese IBX facilities, its data-center sites used for colocation and interconnection. On completing the remaining-share acquisition, Smith said, “Today we are excited to officially welcome the Bit-isle team into the Equinix family.”

Equinix presented the nearby sites as a way to add capacity and connect customers to its existing IBX facilities. It said that campus connectivity could link customers with network and cloud providers, business ecosystems, and enterprises. Those were the company’s intended uses for the expanded footprint, not independently measured outcomes of the acquisition.
How the deal fits into Equinix’s Japan footprint
Do not confuse the six acquired Bit-isle facilities with Equinix’s later Japan-wide count. In October 2016, after its TY5 facility opened, Equinix described its footprint as 10 data centers in Tokyo and two in Osaka. That is a dated company figure from 2016, not a current total. The acquisition is separate from a later notice for customers of Bit-Isle’s legacy DNS services. Equinix documentation says the listed forward-lookup service and authoritative DNS servers were decommissioned on December 15, 2025. The notice says reverse lookup continues for Equinix Internet Access addresses assigned by JPNIC. It concerns those legacy DNS services, not all Equinix connectivity or data-center services.
