Meta was not named in the Agentic AI Foundation’s launch membership roster, but the Linux Foundation did not say why. The foundation launched on December 9, 2025, with contributions from Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI and membership from several other major technology companies. Its published announcement does not say Meta was excluded, invited, or declined to join.
What is the Agentic AI Foundation?
The Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) is a Linux Foundation initiative announced on December 9, 2025. Its stated purpose is to support transparent, collaborative development of agentic AI through open governance. That is an organizational goal; the launch announcement does not establish that the projects already interoperate or that the foundation has produced a unified standard. The Linux Foundation’s announcement describes the launch and its contributed projects.
At launch, the foundation brought three developer projects under its umbrella: Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), Block’s goose, and OpenAI’s AGENTS.md. They address different parts of agent development, rather than serving as three interchangeable products.
What do MCP, goose, and AGENTS.md do?
| Project | Contributor | Role described at launch |
|---|---|---|
| Model Context Protocol (MCP) | Anthropic | A protocol for connecting AI models to tools, data, and applications. |
| goose | Block | An open-source, local-first agent framework combining language models with extensible tools and MCP-based integrations. |
| AGENTS.md | OpenAI | A Markdown convention for giving coding agents project-specific instructions across repositories and toolchains. |
The launch release said MCP had more than 10,000 published servers and named Claude, Cursor, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, VS Code, and ChatGPT among platforms that had adopted it. It also said AGENTS.md had been adopted by more than 60,000 open-source projects and agent frameworks. Those are figures and adoption examples reported by the Linux Foundation at launch in December 2025, not independently verified current totals. The release provides the foundation’s descriptions and launch-period figures.

Why isn’t Meta in the group?
There is no confirmed answer in the published launch materials. Computerworld reported analysts’ theories about Meta’s strategic direction, including a possible move toward proprietary models. That is attributed analysis, not a statement by Meta and not an explanation given by the AAIF or Linux Foundation. Computerworld’s report discusses those interpretations, but the available evidence does not prove why Meta was absent.
It is therefore safer to read “everyone but Meta” as a description of the launch roster than as evidence of a deliberate snub, a rejection, or a settled Meta policy. The roster records who was named at that moment; it does not by itself show what discussions took place or what the company may do later.

What the launch does—and does not—mean
AAIF’s structure puts distinct developer tools in an open-governance setting: MCP addresses connections to tools and data, goose provides an agent framework, and AGENTS.md offers a way to specify repository instructions for coding agents. The Linux Foundation’s executive director, Jim Zemlin, framed the rationale this way: “Bringing these projects together under the AAIF ensures they can grow with the transparency and stability that only open governance provides.”
That statement describes the foundation’s aim, not a demonstrated technical outcome. Membership in a shared foundation does not, on its own, make the projects compatible, require every AI company to adopt them, or guarantee that the launch-period membership and usage figures remain current. For developers, the practical significance is that these projects have a common organizational home for open development; their distinct functions and adoption should still be evaluated separately.
