Oracle Q3 2024: Why Larry Ellison Said Its AI Infrastructure Business Was “Booming”

Oracle’s Q3 FY2024 results showed 49% growth in cloud infrastructure revenue and more than $80 billion in remaining performance obligations. Here is what Ellison’s “booming” AI infrastructure comment means—and what it does not prove.

Oracle’s fiscal third quarter of 2024, ended February 29, 2024, produced $13.3 billion in revenue, up 7% year over year. Cloud revenue rose 25% to $5.1 billion, while cloud infrastructure (IaaS) revenue grew 49% to $1.8 billion. Oracle Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison called the company’s Gen2 AI infrastructure business “booming” during the March 11, 2024 earnings call. The numbers and management comments point to fast demand, but they do not establish a separately reported AI-revenue or profitability measure.

What Oracle reported in Q3 FY2024

Oracle announced results on March 11, 2024, for the quarter ended February 29, 2024. Its reported revenue categories were:

Measure Q3 FY2024 result Year-over-year change
Total revenue $13.3 billion 7%
Total cloud revenue (IaaS plus SaaS) $5.1 billion 25%
Cloud infrastructure revenue (IaaS) $1.8 billion 49%
Cloud applications revenue (SaaS) $3.3 billion 14%

The 49% figure applies to infrastructure alone. It should not be presented as Oracle’s total cloud growth: total cloud combines infrastructure services with cloud applications, which grew at different rates.

Why Ellison described the AI infrastructure business as booming

On the earnings call, Ellison said: “Oracle’s Gen2 AI infrastructure business is booming. That’s become pretty clear to everybody.” He made the comment after referring to another large Generation 2 cloud infrastructure contract with NVIDIA. The wording comes from a third-party Motley Fool transcript, which cautions that transcription errors are possible; Oracle’s webcast audio is the appropriate check for exact punctuation or wording.

The contemporaneous evidence behind the characterization was strong infrastructure growth and unusually large contracted demand:

  • IaaS revenue increased 49% year over year to $1.8 billion.
  • Total remaining performance obligations (RPO) exceeded $80 billion, up 29%.
  • CEO Safra Catz said demand for Gen2 AI infrastructure substantially exceeded available supply, even as Oracle rapidly opened and expanded data centers.

These facts explain management’s confidence. They do not prove that every dollar of IaaS growth came from AI workloads, nor that AI infrastructure was independently measured as profitable.

What Oracle’s more-than-$80 billion RPO means

Remaining performance obligations are contracted work that Oracle expects to deliver in the future. The more-than-$80 billion figure is therefore a backlog indicator, not revenue already recognized in the quarter and not cash collected immediately.

Catz attributed the increase to large new cloud infrastructure contracts. She said Oracle expected 43% of the then-current $80 billion RPO to be recognized over the next four quarters. That was management’s forecast, not a guaranteed conversion schedule. Actual recognition depends on deployment, customer usage, contract terms, capacity and other accounting requirements.

Demand exceeded capacity—but that is not the same as measured AI revenue

Oracle’s statement that demand substantially exceeded supply describes a capacity constraint: customers wanted more Gen2 infrastructure than Oracle could provide at that point. It does not disclose a utilization rate, an AI-only revenue line, customer-level margins or a separate profit figure for AI infrastructure.

For that reason, the most defensible reading is narrower than “Oracle generated $1.8 billion from AI.” The company reported $1.8 billion of IaaS revenue, management linked large contracts and excess demand to Gen2 AI infrastructure, and the reviewed quarterly disclosures did not isolate the AI portion.

How to read the growth rates and currency information

Oracle’s reported comparisons use the actual exchange rates applicable to the reporting periods. In its SEC exhibit, Oracle also described a constant-currency method that converts comparative results using May 31, 2023 exchange rates rather than the rates prevailing during each period. Oracle said currency movements had no impact on total revenue, total operating expenses or operating income for the three months ended February 29, 2024.

When comparing Oracle figures, keep the basis consistent: reported growth and constant-currency growth are different measures, even when the difference is immaterial for a particular line.

Ellison’s healthcare AI comments

Ellison also discussed Oracle’s planned Ambulatory Clinic Cloud Application Suite and Clinical Digital Assistant. Oracle said the planned system would generate doctors’ notes and update electronic health records. Those comments described an announced product plan at the time of the call; they were not independent evidence of product performance, adoption or current capabilities.

What later results add—and what they do not

Oracle’s later fiscal-year comparison reported infrastructure cloud services and license-support revenue of $21.211 billion in FY2025 versus $18.656 billion in FY2024, a reported annual increase of 14%. This is a broader category that includes license support. It cannot be used as a standalone measure of AI infrastructure revenue or as a like-for-like continuation of the Q3 IaaS figure.

A practical framework for interpreting the quarter

  1. Start with recognized revenue: total revenue was $13.3 billion, with IaaS at $1.8 billion.
  2. Separate cloud categories: total cloud grew 25%, IaaS grew 49%, and SaaS grew 14%.
  3. Use RPO as future-work visibility: more than $80 billion signals contracted obligations, not current-period sales.
  4. Label forecasts as forecasts: the 43% four-quarter RPO expectation came from management.
  5. Avoid an unsupported AI total: Q3 disclosures did not separately quantify AI infrastructure revenue, utilization or profitability.

The Bottom Line

“Booming” was a management description supported by 49% IaaS growth, more than $80 billion of RPO and reported demand exceeding available Gen2 capacity. It should be read as evidence of strong momentum and contracted demand—not as proof of a separately measured AI-revenue or profit stream.
