For back-to-school shopping, treat $229 as a possible price for renewed, clearance, or marketplace stock. Recent 2026 deal reports put a new 11-inch, 128GB iPad around $399, while Apple lists the current 128GB Wi‑Fi iPad at $449 retail or $429 for eligible U.S. education customers.
What the $229 iPad deal actually was
AppleInsider reported on August 8, 2024 that Amazon had iPad deals beginning at $229, identifying the 2021 ninth-generation iPad. That report did not establish a current 2026 price. MacRumors’ contemporaneous discussion also identified the $229 model as the ninth generation, while 10th-generation models started higher; 9to5Toys reported a similar $229 ninth-generation and roughly $299 10th-generation comparison.
A listing near $229 can still be worthwhile, but verify whether it is new clearance inventory, renewed/refurbished, used, or sold by a marketplace merchant. Do not describe it as a new current-generation iPad without checking the live product page.
Prices shoppers can reasonably compare in 2026

Tom’s Guide’s reported Amazon price was $399 for an 11-inch, 128GB iPad on August 14, 2026. Macworld’s 2026 tracker separately reported about $427.99 for an A16 128GB configuration; both are time-sensitive reports.
Which deal is best for your student?
Buy near $229 when the low price is the priority
- The listing clearly states generation, storage, connectivity and condition.
- The seller, return deadline and warranty are acceptable.
- The iPad is for streaming, reading, homework apps or use as a backup device.
- You accept that an older 64GB model may fill quickly and may have less remaining software support.
Spend about $399–$429 for a primary school device
A current 128GB iPad is usually the stronger value for daily use over several school years. The newer platform, USB‑C ecosystem and larger storage cushion can justify roughly $100–$200 more than a questionable renewed bargain. Choose iPad Air only for a demanding workload
The Air’s higher price makes sense for sustained multitasking, drawing, video or demanding applications, or when the buyer expects substantial performance headroom. It is not necessary for browsing, writing, video lessons and standard education apps.
Choose iPad mini for portability, not productivity space
The mini is easy to carry and excellent for reading, but its smaller display is less comfortable for essays, spreadsheets and split-screen assignments.

Specifications that matter for school
- Storage: 128GB is a safer baseline for a primary device than 64GB once apps, downloads, photos and system data accumulate.
- Connectivity: Wi‑Fi is adequate for most homes and schools. Cellular adds hardware cost and usually a recurring data plan.
- Processor: A newer chip generally improves multitasking and the likelihood of useful long-term app support, though no future support period is guaranteed.
- Port: Newer USB‑C models fit modern chargers and accessories more easily than Lightning-based ninth-generation hardware.
- Keyboard: Budget for one if the student writes essays, codes or types extensively.
- Apple Pencil: Check exact compatibility before ordering. Pencil USB‑C, first-generation Pencil and Pencil Pro support differ by iPad model.
- Screen: A 10.9- or 11-inch display is generally more practical for documents than the mini’s smaller panel.
- School management: Confirm that required apps, testing software and any mobile-device-management profile support the model and operating-system version.
Amazon checkout checklist
- Open the full product title and confirm the generation or A16 designation, storage capacity and Wi‑Fi versus cellular.
- Read the condition label: new, renewed, refurbished, open-box or used are not interchangeable.
- Check both “Sold by” and “Ships from.” The lowest offer may be a marketplace seller rather than Amazon.com.
- Confirm what is in the box, including the charger and cable.
- Read warranty terms, return deadline and any restocking or return-shipping conditions.
- Scan recent reviews for battery degradation, cosmetic damage, wrong-generation shipments and activation-lock reports.
- See whether the displayed price requires a clipped coupon, Prime membership, trade-in, credit-card promotion or bundle.
- Check the promised delivery date against the first day the student needs the device.
- Verify that the case, keyboard and stylus you plan to buy match the exact generation and port.
Amazon versus Apple Education pricing
Apple’s U.S. Education Store lists the base iPad from $429, iPad Air from $699, iPad mini from $549 and iPad Pro from $1,099. These prices are for eligible U.S. education customers; Apple’s eligibility and U.S.-only scope do not apply to every shopper.
Apple is also advertising a limited-time promotion in which qualifying Mac or iPad purchases receive a gift card. Check the live terms and reward amount; a gift card is not the same as an immediate Amazon cash discount. Account for the total setup cost
The tablet price is only the starting point. Add a protective case, compatible keyboard if needed, a Pencil or other stylus, a USB‑C power adapter where one is not included, and optional protection. Apple lists iPad accessories at its accessories store and AppleCare+ information at its iPad support page. On a $229 renewed device, protection and accessories can represent a large share of the purchase price, so compare the complete setup rather than the headline number.
Buy now, skip or wait?
- Buy now: A clearly identified renewed or older iPad near $229 with a reliable seller, usable returns and a real need for a low-cost secondary device.
- Prefer the current model: The iPad will be used daily for several years, needs 128GB, or must support newer accessories and apps. A verified price around $399–$429 is easier to justify.
- Skip or wait: The listing hides storage or condition, has an unclear seller, lacks meaningful warranty information, shows activation-lock complaints, or reaches $229 only after restrictions you cannot meet.
The Bottom Line
There is no evidence that $229 is the 2026 price of a new current-generation iPad. Treat it as a possible older or renewed-device target. For a primary student tablet, prioritize a verified 128GB current model around $399–$429; move to the $699-plus iPad Air range only when the workload genuinely requires it.
