Google and Walmart announced on January 11, 2026, that Walmart and Sam’s Club shopping would be connected to Google’s Gemini through Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Gemini is intended to help people discover products in a conversation; Walmart’s own shopping technology, including its Sparky assistant, is intended to handle retailer-specific recommendations, carts, membership context and the purchase journey. The first market is the United States.
The feature is not necessarily available in one identical form to every Gemini user. Google said UCP-powered shopping was rolling out across Search and the Gemini app in the U.S. during summer 2026, with Walmart among merchants supporting selected checkout features. As of August 18, 2026, the available announcements do not establish universal access to every Walmart shopping or checkout function.
The short version: Gemini discovers, Walmart completes the retail journey
The partnership, announced at the National Retail Federation’s annual conference, connects Gemini’s conversational discovery with Walmart and Sam’s Club assortment, pricing, delivery and account capabilities. Walmart says its experience is built to appear inside Gemini through UCP, rather than requiring Gemini to own Walmart’s inventory or fulfillment systems.
Expected flow: Gemini conversation → relevant Walmart or Sam’s Club item → Walmart’s Sparky or another Walmart-controlled experience → account, cart and membership context → Google Pay or a Walmart checkout path → Walmart fulfillment and support.

That distinction matters. Gemini may help interpret an open-ended need, while Walmart remains responsible for the product offer, order, delivery, returns and customer service. Google says the participating brand remains the merchant of record, whether payment occurs through Google Pay or on the merchant’s website. Walmart’s announcement and Google’s Universal Cart update describe the planned architecture and rollout.
What Gemini may recommend
Walmart says Gemini can automatically include relevant Walmart and Sam’s Club online and in-store products when a request calls for them. Its example is a conversational query about camping equipment, but the intended use is broader: a person can describe a problem, occasion or set of constraints instead of typing a precise product name.
For example, someone might ask Gemini to plan a family camping weekend on a budget. Gemini could identify products that fit the request and include Walmart or Sam’s Club inventory when those offers are relevant. That does not mean Walmart will always appear first, appear in every shopping answer or be favored regardless of price, availability or relevance. Walmart executives have described external AI systems as choosing among retailers before Walmart’s own agent takes over the retailer-specific portion of the experience. What happens after you select a Walmart item?
Sparky supplies Walmart context
Walmart describes Sparky as its generative-AI shopping assistant. In Walmart’s app, Sparky helps customers find and compare products, build lists, plan occasions and use reviews and product information. Walmart executives have said the same retailer-controlled agent is intended to appear in outside AI environments, including Gemini.

In practice, Gemini’s broad recommendation and Sparky’s retailer-specific assistance are different layers:

Account linking can change the recommendations
If a customer links Walmart and Google accounts, Walmart says it can use available online and in-store purchase history to suggest complementary products. Items found in Gemini may also be combined with products already in a Walmart or Sam’s Club cart.
- Personalization depends on linking the correct accounts and on purchase history being available.
- Recommendations can reflect both online and in-store Walmart activity.
- A complementary-item suggestion may increase the size of a basket, so users should check whether each addition is actually needed.
- The public announcements do not provide a complete description of consent screens, retention periods, unlinking controls or every data setting.
Can you check out without leaving Gemini?
The January announcement and contemporaneous coverage described a goal of discovering products, building carts and purchasing through the Gemini experience. Google’s later description is more conditional. UCP can support checkout within Google; some merchants may offer Google Pay checkout in a few taps, while other transactions may send the shopper to the merchant’s site.

For Walmart, the safest description is that discovery and parts of the Walmart journey may remain in Gemini, but the exact checkout path depends on the transaction, merchant integration, account and rollout stage. A handoff to Walmart is not automatically a failure. Google’s Universal Cart announcement explicitly allows both in-Google payment and merchant-site checkout, while Walmart remains the merchant of record.
What to verify at the payment step
- Whether the order uses Google Pay or opens Walmart or Sam’s Club.
- Which account owns the cart and whether existing items were successfully carried over.
- The final seller, price, delivery fee, taxes and promised delivery window.
- Where to go for changes, refunds, returns or missing orders.
What Universal Commerce Protocol means
UCP is Google’s integration standard for connecting Gemini and other Google shopping surfaces with participating merchants. Google presents it alongside Universal Cart, which is designed to let shopping span Search, Gemini, YouTube and Gmail. Google says its Shopping Graph contains more than 60 billion product listings and identifies Walmart, Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Wayfair and Shopify merchants among participating or planned checkout partners. Google’s Universal Cart announcement provides those rollout details.
For shoppers, UCP is best understood as a shared commerce interface: it helps systems exchange product, cart and checkout actions. It does not transfer Walmart’s inventory ownership, delivery operation, return policy or customer-service responsibility to Google. The public material does not specify every API, authentication or security mechanism, so those technical details should not be inferred from the announcement.
Delivery, Walmart+ and Sam’s Club benefits
Walmart says linked customers can receive benefits associated with Walmart+ and Sam’s Club memberships. It also advertises hundreds of thousands of locally curated products deliverable in under three hours, with some deliveries as fast as 30 minutes.

Those are Walmart-stated capabilities, not universal guarantees. The result can depend on local inventory, store coverage, cutoff times, delivery method, fees, product type and active membership. The announcement does not establish that every Walmart+ or Sam’s Club benefit works identically inside Gemini, so check the offer and final order details before paying.
Availability: what is confirmed and what is not
Walmart said the launch would begin in the United States, with international expansion planned later. Google said UCP-powered shopping was rolling out across U.S. Search and the Gemini app during summer 2026. That language describes a staged rollout, not a promise that every account, device or transaction has the same capability.
- Use a U.S. Google account and a current Gemini app or supported Google surface.
- Ask a clearly shopping-oriented question; try naming Walmart or Sam’s Club if no relevant products appear.
- Link Walmart and Google accounts only if you want retailer-specific personalization and cart context.
- Confirm whether the item is sold by Walmart, Sam’s Club or a marketplace seller.
- Review the final checkout route, inventory, seller, fees, membership benefits and delivery promise.
If Walmart products do not appear, the cause may be staged availability, geography, account eligibility, app version or simple relevance. If personalization is missing, verify account linking. If a cart does not merge, confirm that the same Walmart or Sam’s Club account is active and that the item is eligible for the integrated flow. If an item disappears, recheck local inventory, seller and price on Walmart’s side.

Potential advantages
- Conversational planning can be easier than translating a need into exact retail keywords.
- Gemini can narrow choices before a shopper commits to a retailer.
- Sparky can use Walmart account, cart, membership and purchase context when those connections are enabled.
- Walmart can keep the retailer relationship and fulfillment responsibility while reaching customers in external AI environments.
Limits to keep in mind
- Recommendation logic may be opaque: relevance, inventory, price, personalization, advertising and retailer rules can all matter.
- AI can misunderstand size, compatibility, ingredients, safety requirements or budget constraints.
- Prices, promotions and inventory can change between the conversation and checkout.
- Marketplace sellers can have different shipping, warranty and return terms.
- Linking accounts makes recommendations more useful but shares purchase and membership context with the integrated experience.
- For medical devices, safety equipment or complex components, independently verify specifications before buying.

Walmart has also pursued an arrangement involving shopping through ChatGPT and instant checkout, according to The Associated Press. Walmart’s stated longer-term model is to bring Sparky into ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI environments rather than let an external chatbot own the entire retail relationship.

What the partnership means for shoppers and retailers
For consumers, the practical value is greatest when the need is open-ended: planning an occasion, comparing unfamiliar products or building a basket. Someone who already knows the exact item, needs a precise pickup slot or wants to inspect seller and return terms may still be better served by Walmart’s own search and product pages.
For Walmart, the strategy is also about preserving control when shopping starts in an AI service it does not own. Gemini can create a new discovery occasion, while Sparky can retain Walmart’s merchandising, account, cart and fulfillment context after a Walmart product is selected. That is a different model from simply sending a referral click to a retailer.
The Bottom Line
Google and Walmart are building a Gemini shopping experience in which Gemini helps discover products and Walmart’s Sparky-powered systems handle the retailer-specific journey. The partnership is U.S.-first and rolling out in stages; it does not yet prove that every Gemini user can complete every Walmart purchase in one fully in-chat flow. Treat account linking, delivery speed, prices, inventory and checkout location as transaction-specific details, and use Walmart’s own site when exact fulfillment or return control matters most.
