On January 7, 2026, Apple and Chase announced that Chase will become Apple Card’s new issuer. Goldman Sachs said the program and associated accounts are expected to transition over approximately 24 months—pointing broadly to early 2028, subject to closing conditions and other risks.
Until the migration is completed, Goldman Sachs remains the issuer. Apple says existing cardholders can continue using Apple Card normally during the transition.
What Goldman Sachs’ CEO said in January 2025
On January 15, 2025, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon said the Apple Card partnership was contractually expected to run through 2030 but acknowledged “some possibility” that it could end earlier. He did not announce an immediate termination or shutdown.
The comment came as Goldman was reassessing consumer finance. Reuters reported that Apple Card reduced Goldman’s return on equity by approximately 75 to 100 basis points in 2024. Goldman’s Platform Solutions unit, which included several consumer businesses, recorded an $859 million net loss for 2024. Those figures show pressure on the broader strategy; they do not mean Apple Card alone caused the entire unit loss.

The January 2026 announcement changed the status
The earlier warning became a defined transaction on January 7, 2026. Apple announced that Chase would become the new Apple Card issuer. Goldman Sachs separately confirmed an agreement to transition the Apple Card program and associated accounts to Chase.
Both companies described an expected transition period of approximately 24 months. That suggests a target around early 2028, but it is not a guaranteed January 2028 completion date. Goldman said the timing remains subject to closing conditions and other risks.
The primary announcements are available from Apple, Goldman Sachs and Chase.

Is Goldman Sachs already out?
No. An announced issuer transition is different from an instant shutdown or a completed transfer. As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s materials continue to identify Apple Card as issued by Goldman Sachs Bank USA, Salt Lake City Branch, and Apple Support continues directing customers to Goldman Sachs Apple Card Specialists.
Apple’s current support hub is support.apple.com/apple-card. The card remains a U.S.-only product, and Mastercard is expected to remain its payment network.

Why Goldman wanted to leave consumer credit
Goldman’s stated direction was strategic rather than a claim that Apple Card was being discontinued by Apple. The bank said credit cards were not a go-forward focus as it narrowed its consumer-business ambitions and concentrated on Global Banking & Markets and Asset & Wealth Management.
The documented concerns include the card program’s effect on return on equity and losses in Goldman’s wider consumer expansion. It is more accurate to describe the decision as Goldman reducing exposure to consumer lending than to say simply that “Apple Card failed.”

What the transaction means financially
Goldman said the portfolio involved more than $20 billion of credit-card balances. In its announcement, the bank reported a release of $2.48 billion in loan-loss reserves, offset by $2.26 billion in net-revenue reductions related to markdowns on the outstanding card-loan portfolio and contract-termination obligations, plus $38 million in expenses. Goldman estimated that the transaction’s impact would increase fourth-quarter 2025 earnings per share by $0.46.
These are Goldman’s transaction-related accounting estimates, not a statement that Apple Card generated that amount of profit. The reserve release, markdowns and estimated earnings effect should be evaluated as part of the transition accounting. Goldman also said it would continue operating the program and recording business results until the transition is complete.
What current Apple Card holders should do
Confirmed today
- You can continue using Apple Card during the transition.
- Goldman Sachs remains the current issuer.
- Apple and Chase intend to continue the Apple Card experience while the migration proceeds.
- Apple says it will provide additional information and FAQs as the transition date approaches.
Prudent precautions
- Make payments normally and keep monitoring Apple Wallet and official Apple communications.
- Save statements and other account records for your financial and tax files.
- Do not close the account solely because the issuer is changing.
- Do not assume that the future process will require a brand-new application or that it will preserve every existing term.
Not yet specified in the cited announcement
- Whether card numbers or titanium cards will change.
- Whether existing balances will transfer automatically and whether APRs or credit limits will be revised.
- Whether credit history, account age and payment history will be handled in a particular way.
- Whether Apple Card Monthly Installments and Apple Card Family arrangements will require changes.
- Whether customer service, autopay links or account access will move to Chase systems.
- Whether Apple Card Savings accounts will move from Goldman Sachs to Chase.
Will Apple Card’s features change?
Apple and Chase said users could continue to enjoy the existing Apple Card experience during the transition, including up to 3% Daily Cash on eligible purchases, Apple Card Family, Apple Card Monthly Installments, Wallet spending tools, access to a Savings account and Mastercard acceptance.
That is a description of intended continuity during the transition, not a guarantee that every post-migration APR, reward, eligibility rule, servicing process or account term will remain identical. Apple’s January 2026 announcement listed an APR range of 17.49% to 27.74%, based on creditworthiness, with rates stated as of January 1, 2026; future Chase terms were not established there.

What happens to Apple Card Savings and Apple Cash?
The issuer change does not automatically establish a change to every Apple financial product. The January 2026 announcement identifies Apple Card Savings accounts as provided by Goldman Sachs Bank USA and says users can continue accessing Savings during the transition. It does not say that Savings will transfer to Chase.
Apple’s disclosures separately identify Green Dot Bank as the provider for Apple Cash. Apple, Apple Payments Services, Goldman Sachs Bank USA, Green Dot Bank and Mastercard have distinct roles; describing Apple as the card’s sole “bank” would be inaccurate.

Apple’s application guidance still describes Apple Card as a U.S.-only product issued by Goldman Sachs during the transition. Applicants need an eligible iPhone or iPad, an Apple Account with two-factor authentication and a qualifying U.S. address; approval is subject to credit evaluation. See Apple’s application requirements and credit-evaluation information.
Applying now may provide access to current Apple Card features and terms. However, Apple and Chase have not fully disclosed future Chase underwriting, pricing, rewards or servicing rules. Applying today does not establish that the eventual Chase-issued version will be identical, and no official announcement says that applying early locks in benefits or avoids a future reapplication.

What investors should take from the change
The transaction is evidence of Goldman Sachs’ retreat from consumer lending as well as a major operational transfer. The more-than-$20-billion portfolio, reserve release and other adjustments show that the exit has material accounting consequences. But Goldman’s operating and servicing exposure does not disappear on announcement day: the bank expects to keep running the program until the transition is complete.
Investors should distinguish transaction-specific accounting estimates from the underlying economics of the card program and from the performance of Goldman’s broader Platform Solutions unit.
Bottom line
Goldman Sachs’ January 2025 warning was genuine but incomplete as a current status update. The partnership did not end immediately, and Goldman did not leave Apple Card in 2025. On January 7, 2026, Apple and Chase confirmed that Chase will replace Goldman as issuer through an expected approximately 24-month transition. Apple Card itself has not been announced as ending, and existing customers can continue using it while the migration proceeds.
