Verdict: The $199 Amazon price was a real Labor Day 2024 deal for the 10.2-inch, Wi‑Fi, 64GB iPad 9th generation. It is not a verified live August 2026 offer. Treat any current $199 listing as unconfirmed until the Amazon page shows the exact model, condition, seller, stock status and checkout total.

| Retailer | Amazon U.S. (with comparable $199 coverage at Best Buy) |
| Price | $199, before applicable tax |
| Configuration | 10.2-inch iPad 9th generation, Wi‑Fi, 64GB |
| Reference price | $329, as reported by Tom’s Guide |
| Date observed | Labor Day sale coverage published and updated September 2–3, 2024 |
| Current status | Historical deal; no August 2026 Amazon price was verified |
Tom’s Guide described the $199 price as its lowest observed price at the time. The coverage is here: Tom’s Guide’s Labor Day 2024 live blog. Labor Day 2026 is September 7, so an article cannot honestly present the old price as a live 2026 promotion without a current, date-stamped retailer check.
How to verify a current Amazon listing
- Identify the generation. The title or specifications should explicitly say “iPad (9th Generation).” Do not rely on a similar photograph.
- Confirm the variant. Select Wi‑Fi and 64GB. Cellular, 256GB and other variants can carry different prices.
- Check condition. Distinguish “new,” “renewed,” “used” and “refurbished.” A $199 used unit is not the same deal as a new one.
- Inspect the seller and fulfillment. Note whether it is sold or shipped by Amazon, Apple, an authorized retailer or an unrelated marketplace seller.
- Review checkout. Coupons, taxes, delivery charges and membership requirements can change the final total.
- Read returns and delivery details. Confirm the return deadline, stock status and promised delivery date.
- For used devices, ask about battery testing. Battery capacity may be materially lower than when new.
What model you are buying
The iPad 9th generation was introduced in 2021. Apple lists a 10.2-inch Retina display (2160×1620, 264 ppi), an A13 Bionic chip, 64GB or 256GB storage, an 8MP rear camera and a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage. It has Touch ID in the Home button, a Lightning connector, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Smart Connector and support for the first-generation Apple Pencil. Apple’s technical specifications are at Apple Support.
The Wi‑Fi model measures 9.8 by 6.8 by 0.29 inches and weighs 1.07 pounds. A standard new package includes the iPad, a Lightning-to-USB‑C cable and a 20W USB‑C power adapter. Apple rates battery life at up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi‑Fi or video playback under its test conditions; settings, network use, apps and battery condition affect actual runtime.

Why $199 was attractive
- Strong everyday performance: The A13 Bionic is well suited to Safari, email, school apps, streaming, video calls and casual games.
- Full iPadOS ecosystem: Buyers get access to Apple’s App Store, iCloud, FaceTime, AirDrop and family features at a low entry price.
- Useful front camera: Center Stage can keep a subject in frame during compatible video calls.
- Pencil compatibility: The first-generation Apple Pencil supports notes, markup and basic drawing.
- Convenient wired audio: The headphone jack is useful for children, classrooms and existing wired headphones.
- Good screen for ordinary use: The display is sharp for reading, browsing, schoolwork and video.
Tom’s Guide reported nearly 12 hours in its own battery testing. That is a publication measurement, not an Apple guarantee.
What you give up
64GB can be restrictive
It is workable for online streaming, browsing, email, school documents, light gaming and occasional downloads. It becomes uncomfortable with large game libraries, downloaded video, extensive photos, creative projects or several users sharing one tablet. There is no storage expansion slot.
Rank #2
- 10.2-inch Retina display
Older ports and accessories
The Lightning port is less convenient than USB‑C for newer chargers, hubs and storage devices. The first-generation Pencil charges through a less elegant Lightning arrangement and is not the newer magnetic USB‑C or second-generation Pencil experience.
Older design and wireless hardware
The 9th generation retains the Home button, larger bezels, a non-laminated display and Wi‑Fi 5. Its front camera is not in the newer landscape-oriented position. Apple does not promise a specific number of future software updates, so its remaining support horizon is less certain than that of a newer model.

Hardware-dependent features
Do not buy it expecting every current or future iPad feature. Apple’s iPadOS 26 feature documentation lists Apple Intelligence support for selected newer iPad Pro and iPad Air models, not this A13-based iPad.
9th generation versus 10th generation

| Connector | Lightning | USB‑C |
| Wireless | Wi‑Fi 5 | Wi‑Fi 6 |

| Front camera layout | Traditional portrait-edge placement | Landscape-oriented placement |
| Body | Older bezel-and-Home-button design | Redesigned enclosure |

Who should buy it at $199
- Families seeking an inexpensive first tablet for a child.
- Students using Safari, email, school platforms, notes and video calls.
- People who mainly stream, read, browse and play casual games.
- Apple households that value iCloud, FaceTime, AirDrop and existing App Store purchases.
- Buyers who want the lowest-cost iPad and accept an older design.
Who should wait or pay more
- Anyone needing more than 64GB of local storage.
- Digital artists for whom Pencil charging and latency matter.
- Buyers standardizing on USB‑C accessories.
- People planning to keep the tablet for five or more years.
- Heavy multitaskers, video editors and demanding gamers.
- Anyone considering a cellular model while assuming the $199 price applies.
- Frequent landscape video-call users who want the newer camera placement.
If a newer entry-level iPad is only about $50–$100 more, its USB‑C port, Wi‑Fi 6, redesigned body and newer support horizon may justify the premium. The right comparison is the live total price, not the old headline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.New, refurbished and used are different purchases
Apple’s certified-refurbished listings for the 9th-generation Wi‑Fi 64GB model state that refurbished products receive Apple’s refurbishment process, a one-year limited warranty and 14-day returns, subject to availability. Examples include silver and space gray. Those pages do not establish a current $199 price. A certified unit may offer more predictable warranty coverage than an unknown marketplace listing, but it remains the same older hardware.
Best Value
- Gorgeous 10.2-inch Retina display with True Tone - A13 Bionic chip with Neural Engine
- 8MP Wide back camera, 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage
- Touch ID for secure authentication and Apple Pay - Stereo speakers
For any used iPad, verify that Activation Lock is removed, the device can be reset, the battery has been tested and the seller accepts returns. Add the cost of a case, screen protector, charger or cable, and possibly a Pencil or keyboard, before comparing the total package with a newer iPad.
Buy-or-wait decision
Buy at $199 when
- The listing is new or clearly certified refurbished.
- It is the 64GB Wi‑Fi model.
- The seller, fulfillment and return terms are acceptable.
- Your needs are basic and a newer model costs substantially more.
Wait or upgrade when
- The listing is used with uncertain battery health.
- You need more storage, USB‑C or intensive Pencil use.
- You expect to keep the tablet for many years.
- A newer iPad is close enough in price to reduce the value of the older design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the iPad 9th generation really $199 at Amazon?
