SoundCloud said it had not trained AI models on artists’ content and that the wording was meant to cover operational tools such as recommendations, search, tagging, fraud detection and content identification.
SoundCloud later narrowed the language. The current Terms of Use, last amended January 19, 2026, say SoundCloud will not use content to train generative-AI models intended to replicate or synthesize a user’s voice, music or likeness without affirmative opt-in consent. That is a meaningful protection, but it is not a promise that no SoundCloud service or partner uses machine-learning systems for any purpose.
What triggered the SoundCloud AI backlash?
On May 9, 2025, reporting highlighted a clause that SoundCloud had reportedly added in a February 2024 terms update. In the absence of a separate agreement, users appeared to agree that their content could be used to “inform, train, develop, or serve as input to AI or machine-intelligence technologies or services” as part of providing SoundCloud’s services. TechCrunch reported the clause and SoundCloud’s response; The FADER followed with the company’s clarification.
Artists objected because the wording was broad and did not clearly separate ordinary machine-learning features from generative systems that can imitate a performer. “Train” and “serve as input” are terms commonly associated with datasets and model development. At the time, users also reported that they could not find an obvious web setting to opt out.

- COMPLETE VOCAL SETUP: shock mount, pop filter and XLR cable included, add an interface and record
- THE SOUND OF HIT RECORDS: the legendary NT1 large-diaphragm condenser voicing trusted in studios for two decades
- WHISPER-QUIET: among the lowest self-noise microphones ever made, nothing between you and the take
- BUILT FOR VOCALS AND STREAMS: tight cardioid pattern focuses on the voice, rejects the room
- IN THE BOX: NT1 Signature (Black), SM6 shock mount with pop filter, XLR cable and dust cover
The clause was evidence of contractual ambiguity, not proof that SoundCloud had actually trained a generative model on uploaded music.
Did SoundCloud train an AI model on artists’ music?
SoundCloud said it had not. Its public explanation stated that:
- Artist content had never been used to train AI models.
- SoundCloud had not developed generative-AI tools using artists’ uploads.
- It did not permit third parties to scrape SoundCloud content for AI training.
- The disputed language was intended to describe internal, AI-assisted functions.
SoundCloud identified recommendations, search, playlisting, tagging and content organization, fraud detection, and content identification as examples of those internal uses. The available sources establish SoundCloud’s position; they do not constitute an independent technical audit proving that no content was ever used in any machine-learning process. The distinction matters when describing what is known.

What did SoundCloud change?
SoundCloud acknowledged that the earlier wording was too broad and unclear. The replacement commitment focuses on a narrower category: generative-AI models intended to replicate or synthesize a user’s voice, music or likeness. SoundCloud says it will not use content for that purpose without the user’s explicit, affirmative consent through an opt-in mechanism.
SoundCloud also said that future generative-AI opportunities for artists would be offered only with explicit consent and artist control. This is an opt-in promise, not an opt-out system in which participation is assumed unless a creator finds a setting and disables it.
What the current Terms of Use say
The live SoundCloud Terms of Use, accessed August 18, 2026, govern the website, applications, APIs and services. The document states that it was last amended on January 19, 2026 and links to earlier versions, including the May and September 2025 versions.

The promise is therefore specific. It addresses generative models aimed at reproducing creative identity; it does not say that every algorithmic process touching an upload is prohibited.
Is SoundCloud still using AI?
Yes. SoundCloud’s AI Partnerships & Integrations page describes AI-related work involving discovery and recommendations, organization and tagging, content identification, fraud detection, remixing and music-creation tools through partners, and controlled vocal-transformation or music-generation services.

What do SoundCloud’s API rules add?
The SoundCloud API Terms of Use place explicit limits on developers. They prohibit copying or reproducing user content to inform, train, develop or provide input to AI technologies unless the use is expressly licensed. The terms also say API-accessed content may not be used to train or develop AI, create fingerprints, or serve as input to an AI system.
Developers cannot create an AI service trained on SoundCloud user content without all relevant licenses, rights, permissions and rightsholder authorization. These rules apply to API users, not necessarily every use of content inside SoundCloud’s own services. The apparent difference between the old general wording and the API restrictions reflects different documents governing different actors and access routes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can artists upload and monetize AI-generated music?
SoundCloud’s help-center guidance treats this as a product and rights question, not a single platform-wide yes-or-no rule. Its page on distribution rejections and their resolution says SoundCloud supports AI tracks but requires rights verification for distribution and monetization. It states that, at the time of publication, content made with services such as Suno was not valid for SoundCloud for Artists distribution or monetization, while content created through SoundCloud’s AI integration partners could be eligible.

That guidance does not establish a ban on every AI-assisted upload made directly to SoundCloud. Before submitting a release, ask:
- Is the track fully generated, or was AI used only for mixing, mastering, stem separation or arrangement?
- Do you control the master and composition?
- Were samples, cloned voices, names or likenesses used?
- Does the AI tool’s license permit commercial distribution and monetization?
- Are you uploading directly, or using SoundCloud for Artists?
- Is the tool an approved SoundCloud integration partner for the relevant workflow?
What creators should check before uploading
- Read the live terms. Do not rely on screenshots of the 2024 clause. Check the current Terms of Use and note the amendment date.
- Identify the route. Ordinary uploads, SoundCloud for Artists distribution, API access and third-party integrations can have different rules.
- Confirm chain of title. Verify rights in the master, composition, samples, vocals and any person’s likeness or voice.
- Review the AI tool license. Check commercial-use permissions, ownership language, attribution, revenue sharing, training rights and restrictions on client or label work.
- Separate processing from generative training. A recommendation or fingerprinting system is not the same as a model built to imitate an artist.
- Look for an actual opt-in. If SoundCloud offers a future generative-AI program, participation should be based on affirmative consent rather than a buried default grant.
- Keep records. Retain project files, sample and beat licenses, collaborator permissions, AI-tool terms and voice or likeness releases.
Important limits and edge cases
- A track can be AI-assisted without being fully generated, and different workflows may receive different treatment.
- Owning an uploaded master does not automatically clear a sample, a collaborator’s performance or a cloned voice.
- A public upload is not automatically a license for third-party model training.
- Any “no AI” signaling mechanism may communicate restrictions to third parties, but it should not be treated as a universal technical barrier against scraping.
- Contract terms do not resolve every copyright, publicity-rights, performer-rights, privacy or licensing issue.
- Terms and product policies can change, so creators should recheck the live documents before a commercially important release.
What the 2025 controversy means in 2026
The original dispute was about more than whether a model had already been trained. It exposed how a general permission to “train” or use content as AI input can be read as an implied license for generative systems, even when a platform says it meant recommendations or fraud prevention. SoundCloud’s current language narrows that ambiguity by requiring affirmative opt-in consent for generative models designed to replicate or synthesize a user’s voice, music or likeness.
That change should not be reported as “SoundCloud banned AI.” SoundCloud still describes machine-learning operations and partner tools, and distribution eligibility depends on the specific product, tool and rights documentation. The most accurate current description is narrower: SoundCloud revised a controversial clause and now makes a specific opt-in commitment for certain identity-replicating generative-AI training, while retaining AI-assisted platform functions under separate rules.
