Bottomless raises $4.5M as Seattle startup grows team and business around smart coffee platform

Seattle startup Bottomless raised $4.5 million in 2021 to scale a Wi-Fi smart-scale coffee subscription that reordered by consumption rather than a fixed schedule.

Seattle startup Bottomless announced a $4.5 million Series A on March 19, 2021, to expand a coffee business that combined a Wi-Fi-connected scale, usage-based replenishment and a multi-roaster marketplace. The company said the round brought its reported total funding to $6.55 million and gave it resources to hire, improve the product and broaden its sensor-enabled commerce platform.

The important distinction is that Bottomless was not simply mailing coffee on a calendar. Its system measured how quickly a household used coffee and triggered a proposed reorder when supplies were running low.

What Bottomless announced in March 2021

GeekWire reported the $4.5 million Series A on March 19, 2021. The article described the financing as a new Series A and said Bottomless had raised $6.55 million in total at that point. No valuation was disclosed. Third-party databases have reported differing round dates and lifetime totals, so the contemporaneous announcement is the clearest source for these figures: GeekWire’s March 2021 coverage.

Bottomless said it would use the money for hiring, product development and broader growth of its smart-commerce platform. The founders were married couple Michael Mayer and Liana Herrera. Investors named in the announcement were Positive Sum, Craft Ventures, Pioneer Fund, FJ Labs, Turner Novak and Dalton Caldwell.

BLACK+DECKER 12-Cup Drip Coffee Maker with Vortex Brewing
  • 12-CUP DURALIFE GLASS CARAFE: The sturdy 12-cup* carafe has measurement markings for accurate filling and an easy-grip handle for comfortable pouring. *Cup equals approximately 5 ounces (varies by brewing technique).
  • SNEAK-A-CUP FEATURE TO PREVENT DRIPS: This feature temporarily stops the flow of coffee so you can pour your first cup before brewing ends without making a mess.
  • EASY-VIEW WATER WINDOW: The front-facing window shows you the exact amount of water that will turn into coffee, and the brew basket requires a standard paper coffee filter for proper operation.
  • DIGITAL CONTROLS WITH RUBBERIZED FEEL: Large, rubberized buttons give you full control of the coffeemaker, and the easy-read screen displays the clock, brew time, and programming options.
  • QUICKTOUCH PROGRAMMING WITH AUTO SHUTOFF: Easily program the 24-hour auto brew feature so you can wake up to a fresh pot of coffee or whenever you desire. 2-Hour Auto Shutoff for added safety and peace of mind with every use.

How the smart-coffee subscription worked

The service replaced a fixed delivery interval with consumption-based ordering:

  1. Choose coffee. A customer selected a rotation or a specific coffee.
  2. Install the scale. Bottomless shipped a Wi-Fi-enabled scale with the subscription.
  3. Measure supply. The customer put a coffee bag, hopper or container on the scale.
  4. Transmit usage. Weight readings showed how quickly the household was consuming coffee.
  5. Predict the next order. Bottomless estimated when the remaining supply would run out.
  6. Give notice. The company says it sends an SMS or email alert roughly 8–12 hours before an order is placed.
  7. Allow intervention. Customers can change the coffee, postpone or cancel before the shipment is ordered.

That approach targets the main weakness of ordinary coffee subscriptions: a delivery every two or four weeks can arrive too early for an occasional drinker or too late for a heavy user. Prediction is not a guarantee; a vacation, guests, spills, shared consumption or an offline scale can make the estimate wrong.

The business Bottomless was actually building

Coffee was the initial category for a broader idea: a “sensor enabled e-commerce marketplace.” The hardware creates a measurement point in the home, the data personalizes replenishment timing, and a marketplace lets Bottomless recommend products from multiple producers. Recurring orders then create an ongoing customer relationship rather than a one-time transaction.

Keurig K-Duo Hot & Iced Single Serve & Carafe Coffee Maker, MultiStream Technology, 72oz Reservoir (Gen 2)
  • BREW BY THE CUP OR CARAFE: Brews both K-Cup pods and coffee grounds.
  • MULTISTREAM TECHNOLOGY: Saturates the grounds evenly to extract full flavor and aroma in every cup, hot or cold.
  • BREW OVER ICE: Adjusts temperature for maximum flavor and less ice melt for single-cup iced coffees and teas.
  • STRONG BREW & EXTRA HOT FUNCTIONALITY: Brews a stronger, more intense-flavored cup and the extra hot feature brews a hotter single cup.
  • MULTIPLE BREW SIZES: Brew 6, 8, 10, or 12oz single cups or 6, 8, 10, or 12-cup carafes. 12-cup glass carafe specially designed to limit dripping.

Bottomless’s 2021 materials presented expansion beyond coffee as a strategic ambition, not as proof that a large household-goods marketplace already existed. The round therefore financed both a coffee subscription and a test of whether connected hardware could make repeat-purchase commerce more adaptive.

Traction reported at the time

All of the following were company-reported 2021 figures, not independently audited performance metrics:

  • More than $2 million in revenue run rate.
  • “Phenomenal retention,” a characterization from co-founder Liana Herrera rather than a disclosed retention percentage.
  • Herrera attributed 75% of the previous month’s growth to direct, organic or referral sources.
  • Eight employees: three in Seattle and five distributed internationally.
  • A plan to at least double the team.

Planned roles included a vice president of growth, product operations, content creation, full-stack development, lead design and data science. Those plans do not establish that the positions were ultimately filled.

Investors and the 2021 market context

The named backers—Positive Sum, Craft Ventures, Pioneer Fund, FJ Labs, Turner Novak and Dalton Caldwell—gave the company a mix of venture and operator-oriented support. Bottomless is also identified as a Y Combinator W19 company in company-profile material, although the funding announcement does not establish the complete chronology of every investment.

The timing helped the pitch. E-commerce adoption was accelerating, independent roasters were selling online and consumers were becoming more familiar with subscriptions. The founders cited Amazon’s Wi-Fi-enabled Dash Smart Shelf as evidence that sensor-driven replenishment was becoming understandable to mainstream customers. That is market validation, not evidence that Amazon’s product directly competed with Bottomless’s coffee service.

What the service costs now

Bottomless’s official website was accessible in August 2026 and showed a current offer of 30 days free, then $7.99 per month. The site advertised a smart scale, free shipping, 20% off the first bag and 10% off later bags. It also advertised more than 50 roasters and over 3,500 possible rotations; those are current first-party marketing claims, not independently verified operating metrics. Hardware requirements and failure points

Current support documentation shows why the scale is central to the economics and user experience:

  • The Model U setup requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; it is not compatible with a 5 GHz-only network.
  • Model U battery life is listed as up to two years, with a non-rechargeable battery.
  • The Model OG is listed as supporting up to 4.5 pounds.
  • A customer can use a personal container by establishing a new zero level, and support materials say a grinder hopper can also work when only part of a bag is poured in.
  • A scale is generally configured for one product at a time and may not be reusable across unrelated subscriptions.
  • Changing Wi-Fi networks can require reconfiguration. If the scale’s broadcast network does not appear, support recommends trying another device or requesting a replacement; a hidden network may need to be made visible during setup.

These are practical costs of a hardware-dependent subscription. Incorrect placement, a depleted battery, a restrictive router or coffee stored somewhere other than the scale can delay or distort a reorder.

Who may benefit—and who may not

Potential advantages

  • Delivery timing adjusts to heavy or light consumption instead of a preset calendar.
  • Rotations provide access to multiple roasters and styles.
  • Alerts and the ability to postpone, cancel or switch coffee preserve user control.
  • The marketplace model can support recurring sales while giving producers another route to customers.

Potential drawbacks

  • The $7.99 monthly membership is an ongoing expense after the trial.
  • Automated purchasing requires trust in the prediction and attention to alerts.
  • Shared households, travel and unusual consumption can produce an inaccurate estimate.
  • Reliable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, correct tare settings and a suitable scale size are prerequisites.
  • Privacy and data-use questions matter because household consumption is being monitored; the available product material does not by itself establish the company’s full privacy practices.

For someone who buys coffee locally, drinks very little or dislikes recurring charges, a conventional subscription or direct purchase may be simpler. Trade Coffee (drinktrade.com), Bean Box (beanbox.com), MistoBox (mistobox.com) and direct roaster plans are comparison categories, not current price recommendations here.

What can—and cannot—be concluded in 2026

The live official website and support pages indicate that Bottomless continued to present an active subscription service in August 2026. They do not establish current revenue, valuation, headcount, profitability or post-2021 funding. Nor do the current marketing claims prove that the broader household-products marketplace became a major business line.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: Bottomless’s investable thesis was the combination of low-cost connected hardware, consumption data and recurring commerce. Its long-term success depends on retaining subscribers, predicting demand accurately, keeping scales reliable and making the membership fee worthwhile after coffee and shipping costs are considered.
