Avalanche Energy says it operated a compact fusion machine at 300,000 volts for multiple hours across a gap of about 2.5 inches. That is a meaningful high-voltage and plasma-engineering milestone for its magneto-electrostatic “Orbitron” concept. It is not, however, evidence that Avalanche already has a net-electricity-producing desktop reactor.
The company’s nearer-term plan is to commercialize neutron generation, materials testing, radioisotopes, specialized hardware and facility access while it works toward a future deuterium-tritium experiment with Q>1—more fusion energy produced than energy supplied to the plasma.
What Avalanche actually achieved
In July 2025, Avalanche reported sustained operation at 300 kV for hours in a compact device. The company described an average electric-field gradient of more than 4.7 megavolts per meter; its later material and a TechCrunch report describe the result as roughly 5–6 MV/m. The differing figures appear to reflect geometry assumptions and rounding, not separate voltage records.
These are company-reported operating figures. They show that the apparatus can hold a very high voltage in a small vacuum system for an extended period. They do not establish net fusion energy, commercially useful electricity or an independently audited power-producing reactor.

Avalanche’s own announcement characterizes the milestone as an enabling step for its FusionWERX neutron-factory program: https://www.avalanchefusion.com/news-release/avalanche-energy-awarded-10-million-grant-from-washington-state-to-develop-fusionwerx-neutron-factory.
Why 300 kV matters to the Orbitron
Avalanche is pursuing a magneto-electrostatic design rather than the large magnetic-confinement geometry used by tokamaks and stellarators. Its description combines intense electric fields with magnetic fields so fast-moving ions follow tight orbits around an electrode while electrons and ions are co-confined.
Higher ion energy and density can raise the probability of fusion collisions and, before a power reactor is possible, can support neutron production. The difficult part is maintaining that field in a vacuum without unacceptable leakage, arcing, field emission, heating, sputtering or damage to the electrode and feedthrough. Sustaining 300 kV for hours therefore matters more than briefly reaching the voltage once.
Avalanche lists a peer-reviewed paper, “The Orbitron: A crossed-field device for co-confinement of high energy ions and electrons,” published in August 2024, alongside work on ion loading in a 100 kV orbitrap and its Hammerhead vacuum bushing. A paper or component demonstration supports a technical concept; it does not by itself validate commercial reactor performance. What the milestone does—and does not—prove
| Evidence level | What is established | What remains unproven |
|---|---|---|
| High-voltage operation | Company-reported 300 kV operation for multiple hours in a roughly 2.5-inch geometry | That the full system is economically efficient or scalable |
| Plasma measurements | Avalanche later reported an apparent ion temperature above 1 keV, equivalent to about 11 million °C | That the plasma has sufficient density and confinement time for net energy |
| Fusion and neutrons | The program is designed to produce high-energy neutrons and pursue future deuterium-tritium testing | A demonstrated, independently calibrated neutron rate or commercially useful continuous output |
| Energy gain | Q>1 is a stated future objective | Any demonstrated plasma gain or whole-system net electricity |
Temperature is not power. A small number of energetic ions can have a high apparent temperature while still producing too few reactions, for too short a time, to overcome plasma-heating, electrical, radiation, cooling and other balance-of-plant losses.
Is this already a desktop fusion reactor?
No. “Desktop” describes the scale of the prototype, not a consumer product. It does not mean safe for a home, plug-and-play, capable of powering a computer, low-radiation or exempt from high-voltage, vacuum, radioactive-materials and nuclear-safety controls.
Avalanche has not presented evidence in the cited material of a commercially useful reactor delivering net electricity. Its announced path is to reach a future deuterium-tritium test with Q>1, then address heat extraction and power conversion. Q>1 itself must also be defined carefully: it usually refers to fusion energy relative to energy delivered to the plasma, not necessarily electricity exported after all plant losses.
FusionWERX: the nearer-term commercial opportunity
Avalanche is developing FusionWERX, a planned commercial-scale test facility in Richland, Washington. The company says it will offer access to neutron-generation and fusion-testing infrastructure for private companies, universities, national laboratories and public-private consortia, with customers expected to retain ownership of their intellectual property.

How Avalanche plans to make money before fusion electricity
The company has identified several possible revenue streams:
- neutron generation and neutron-based testing;
- medical and power radioisotope production;
- FusionWERX facility rentals;
- materials irradiation and qualification;
- specialized high-voltage hardware; and
- future compact power systems.
In the 2025 TechCrunch interview, CEO Robin Langtry forecast profitability in 2028 and revenue of $30 million–$50 million in 2029 from radioisotope sales and FusionWERX rentals. Those are management forecasts, not achieved financial results.

Energy balance and confinement
The device must sustain useful density, ion energy and confinement long enough for fusion output to exceed every relevant input and loss. High voltage or a 1 keV apparent ion temperature alone cannot answer that question.

Electrical and vacuum reliability
Compact high-voltage systems face arcing, field emission, leakage, contamination, sputtering, insulation aging and heat removal. Long-duration uptime is essential if neutron services are to be economical.
Neutron economics and materials
A viable service needs a competitive neutron rate, uptime, shielding, maintenance schedule and cost per neutron. Fusion-energy neutrons also damage and activate materials, creating replacement and waste-management requirements.
Tritium, licensing and plant systems
Deuterium-tritium operation requires radioactive-materials licensing, containment, accounting and specialized handling. A power system would additionally need shielding, heat removal, turbines or another conversion system, and regulatory approval that varies by jurisdiction.
Scale and manufacturability
A small laboratory machine can shorten design cycles, but it is not automatically a mass-manufacturable product. Avalanche must demonstrate repeatable performance, component life, maintenance procedures and economics at the intended operating scale.
How to judge the next milestone
The most informative future disclosures will answer practical questions rather than merely report a higher voltage:
- How long was the voltage sustained, and what were total electrical losses?
- What plasma density and ion-energy distribution were measured?
- What neutron rate was recorded, under which operating conditions, and with what calibration?
- What was the total wall-plug energy input?
- Did neutron production remain continuous or occur only in short pulses?
- What specific experiment does 300 kV enable that 200 kV could not?
- How does the result lead quantitatively toward a Q>1 deuterium-tritium test?
Avalanche’s missions page presents possible defense, space, neutron and radioisotope applications at https://www.avalanchefusion.com/missions.
The Bottom Line
Avalanche has moved its Orbitron concept toward a more credible compact-fusion development program: 300 kV sustained for hours, a reported apparent ion temperature above 1 keV, new private funding, government contracts and a planned neutron-testing facility. The decisive milestone is still ahead: sustained, independently measured net-energy production and, eventually, reliable electricity generation.
