Re:

GeForce RTX 5090 Cards Were Listed on eBay for Up to $7,000 Before Launch

The $7,000 RTX 5090 figure was an eBay asking price before launch—not proof of a $7,000 delivered sale. Reported completed listings reached roughly $3,200–$6,190 plus shipping, with some offers appearing to be preorders or allocation promises.

Short answer: A January 2025 report found an ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5090 advertised on eBay with a $7,000 “Buy It Now” price, versus the Founders Edition’s $1,999 starting MSRP. That was an asking price, not proof of a $7,000 sale. The same report identified completed eBay listings at approximately $3,200 to $6,190 plus shipping. Some offers appeared to be preorders or retailer-allocation promises rather than cards the sellers physically owned.

These figures describe launch-week speculation on January 23–24, 2025, ahead of the expected January 30 retail launch—not verified market prices for August 2026.

What the $7,000 eBay listing actually showed

The reported $7,000 listing was for an ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 and used eBay’s “Buy It Now” format. Compared with NVIDIA’s $1,999 Founders Edition starting MSRP, $7,000 was $5,001 higher—about 3.5 times MSRP, or roughly 250% above it.

That number established only that a seller was willing to ask $7,000. An active listing can expire, be removed, receive no payment, or be canceled. It does not establish a market-clearing price. The launch-period report is available at HotHardware.

What buyers reportedly paid

The more meaningful evidence was the publication’s review of completed eBay listings. It reported winning or completed prices from approximately $3,200 to $6,190, plus shipping. Those were still extraordinary premiums, but they should not be described as $7,000 sales. The source did not provide a comprehensive transaction database, proof that every transaction was fulfilled, or a count of canceled orders.

Observed price Difference from $1,999 MSRP Approximate multiple Evidence type
$1,999 Baseline 1.00× Founders Edition starting MSRP
$3,200 $1,201 more 1.60× Reported completed listing
$3,800 $1,801 more 1.90× Reported listing; appeared to involve an allocation promise
$6,190 $4,191 more 3.10× Reported completed listing
$7,000 $5,001 more 3.50× Observed Buy It Now asking price

Shipping, taxes, insurance and import charges could raise a buyer’s delivered cost. A “completed” marketplace transaction also is not identical to a documented delivery: nonpayment, cancellation, seller failure to ship or a buyer dispute can occur afterward.

Some listings were selling a promise, not a card

Not every offer appeared to represent an RTX 5090 sitting in a seller’s warehouse. The report described listings that functioned as preorders, reservations or promised access to a retailer allocation. One MSI Suprim listing around $3,800 said the seller had guaranteed retailer “slots” through an alleged technology-retailer connection. That was an unverified seller claim, not evidence of inventory or employment.

A buyer should distinguish these offers:

  • Physical inventory: the seller has the exact card and can provide a verifiable handling or shipping timeline.
  • Preorder: the seller expects to obtain the card later; allocation and delivery are uncertain.
  • Reservation or slot: the buyer is paying for an opportunity to purchase, not necessarily the product itself.
  • Stock-image listing: photographs do not demonstrate possession.
  • Completed sale: an ended listing or winning bid; it still does not prove successful delivery.

Some reported listings stated that refunds or returns were unavailable. That can leave a buyer exposed if a promised allocation never arrives or the product differs from the description.

Why launch-week speculation pushed prices so high

The RTX 5090 was expected to launch on January 30, 2025 at a $1,999 Founders Edition MSRP. Before broad retail availability, buyers faced uncertainty about supply while demand for the flagship GPU was intense. Anticipated scarcity, fear of missing out and the value some buyers placed on getting hardware first created an opportunity for sellers to monetize access.

A contemporaneous buying guide described pre-launch eBay listings around $3,000–$7,000 and identified major U.S. channels including Amazon, Best Buy, B&H Photo, Newegg and NVIDIA. That guide provides launch context, not an audit of completed or delivered transactions: Inkl’s buying guide.

Custom cards can legitimately cost more than a Founders Edition because of different coolers, power delivery, factory settings and branding. Those design differences may explain a normal model premium; they do not, by themselves, justify several thousand dollars of launch markup.

How to evaluate an eBay GPU price

  1. Check listing status: determine whether it is active, ended, sold, canceled or removed.
  2. Read the price mechanism: distinguish Buy It Now, an auction’s final bid, an accepted offer and a reserve price.
  3. Confirm the model: compare the exact ASUS, MSI or other board-partner model with that model’s legitimate retail price, not only the Founders Edition MSRP.
  4. Verify possession: request current photos and a specific handling date; treat allocation stories as claims until documented.
  5. Inspect condition: new, open-box and used cards have different warranty and return implications.
  6. Calculate delivered cost: include shipping, sales tax, insurance and possible import fees.
  7. Read returns and warranty terms: identify no-return language and whether manufacturer warranty support is transferable.
  8. Review seller history: look for relevant feedback and evidence of successfully shipping comparable hardware.
  9. Keep payment on-platform: off-platform requests can remove marketplace protections.
  10. Look for fulfillment evidence: tracking and delivery confirmation are stronger evidence than a listing marked sold.

When paying a huge premium might—or might not—make sense

Potentially defensible cases

  • A professional workload generates measurable revenue and the earlier access materially reduces project time.
  • The buyer has a specific need for RTX 5090-level compute and has priced the opportunity cost of waiting.
  • The seller offers immediate shipment, clear returns and verifiable warranty eligibility at a premium the buyer can afford without debt.

Usually poor financial choices

  • Paying $3,000–$7,000 for ordinary gaming when a retail restock or lower-tier card can meet the need.
  • Buying a preorder with no guaranteed allocation, no refund and no firm delivery date.
  • Paying near-new prices for used or open-box hardware without clear condition and warranty terms.
  • Assuming a completed auction guarantees a delivered card.

Before committing, compare the total resale premium with waiting, buying a temporary lower-tier GPU, or purchasing a complete prebuilt system whose bundle includes a warranty. What the episode proves—and what it does not

The evidence supports a narrow conclusion: during the January 2025 launch window, sellers advertised RTX 5090 access at extreme premiums, and reported completed listings reached roughly $3,200–$6,190 plus shipping. It does not show that buyers broadly paid $7,000, that every seller possessed a card, that every transaction was fulfilled, or that the premium persisted after launch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did an RTX 5090 actually sell for $7,000?

The reported $7,000 figure was an observed eBay Buy It Now asking price. The same report cited completed listings up to approximately $6,190 plus shipping, not a verified delivered $7,000 sale.

Was $7,000 NVIDIA’s retail price?

No. NVIDIA’s cited Founders Edition starting MSRP was $1,999. The $7,000 figure came from a third-party eBay seller.

Why are preorders riskier than cards in hand?

A preorder or allocation offer depends on the seller obtaining future stock. Delays, cancellations, misrepresented access and no-return terms can leave the buyer paying for a promise rather than receiving a product.
