Edgio’s Bankruptcy Changed .NET Download Links: What Teams Needed to Update

Edgio’s 2024 bankruptcy triggered a Microsoft .NET CDN hostname migration. Here are the exact replacements, audit commands, affected systems and lessons for build-supply-chain resilience.

Edgio filed for Chapter 11 protection on September 9, 2024. Microsoft then warned on December 24–26 that some .NET download and build URLs using Edgio-backed CDN infrastructure would move to new hostnames. The change affected scripts, CI jobs, Dockerfiles, firewall allowlists and internal mirrors—not application compatibility or a required .NET version upgrade.

That migration was expected to finish by May 31, 2025 at the latest, so this is a completed infrastructure incident as of 2026, not a new outage. The practical lesson is to find stale CDN dependencies and make build artifacts independently recoverable.

What happened

  1. September 9, 2024: Edgio filed Chapter 11 in Delaware. The bankruptcy case is documented at the Edgio case overview.
  2. November 2024: A bankruptcy court approved Akamai’s bid for selected Edgio assets and customer contracts. Akamai said the transaction excluded Edgio personnel, technology and network assets, and described an Edgio CDN wind-down toward mid-January 2025. See Akamai’s announcement.
  3. December 24, 2024: Microsoft opened .NET tracking issue #9671.
  4. December 26, 2024: Microsoft publicly announced the link transition in its .NET blog.
  5. 2025: Microsoft updated its tooling and expected the old azureedge.net domains to cease no later than May 31.

Microsoft described a delivery configuration involving Akamai, Azure Front Door, Edgio and Azure Traffic Manager. Edgio’s bankruptcy created the operational risk; Microsoft, rather than Akamai, chose and implemented the .NET endpoint migration. This was not a universal shutdown of every Azure-branded CDN hostname.

Which URLs changed?

Purpose Old hostname Replacement hostname Qualification
Official signed .NET builds dotnetcli.azureedge.net builds.dotnet.microsoft.com Microsoft’s primary replacement; paths were intended to remain compatible.
CI and unsigned builds dotnetbuilds.azureedge.net ci.dot.net Separate CI channel; do not substitute it for official signed-build delivery.
Blob-storage references Microsoft asked users to find dotnetcli.blob.core.windows.net
dotnetbuilds.blob.core.windows.net
Use the corresponding Microsoft CDN hostname The blob host was described as unaffected at the time, but Microsoft recommended migrating references.

In ordinary cases, only the hostname changed. For example:

https://dotnetcli.azureedge.net/dotnet/Runtime/8.0.11/dotnet-runtime-8.0.11-linux-x64.tar.gz

became:

https://builds.dotnet.microsoft.com/dotnet/Runtime/8.0.11/dotnet-runtime-8.0.11-linux-x64.tar.gz

The incident did not require changing from .NET 8 to .NET 9, altering application source code or rewriting the version path.

Who needed to audit systems?

  • Teams with hard-coded URLs in shell, PowerShell, YAML or JSON.
  • CI jobs that download SDKs or runtimes directly.
  • Dockerfiles and long-lived base images containing old installers.
  • Self-hosted runners, golden images and Azure DevOps Server agents.
  • Projects with pinned older versions of actions/setup-dotnet or Azure DevOps UseDotNet tasks.
  • Firewalls, proxies and egress allowlists restricted to the old hostnames.
  • Internal mirrors synchronizing release metadata or binaries.
  • Air-gapped environments importing installers on a schedule.

Most people installing through current Microsoft pages or updated tooling did not need to edit anything manually. The risk was concentrated in copied, pinned or locally controlled infrastructure.

Audit and remediation checklist

1. Search repositories and hosts

On Linux, macOS, Git Bash or WSL:

grep -RInE 'azureedge.net|dotnetcli.blob.core.windows.net|dotnetbuilds.blob.core.windows.net'
  .
  --exclude-dir=.git

For common system locations:

grep -RInE 'azureedge.net|dotnetcli.blob.core.windows.net|dotnetbuilds.blob.core.windows.net'
  /etc /opt /srv /usr/local 2>/dev/null

In PowerShell:

Get-ChildItem -Path . -Recurse -File -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
  Select-String -Pattern `
    'azureedge.net',
    'dotnetcli.blob.core.windows.net',
    'dotnetbuilds.blob.core.windows.net'

To focus on build-related files:

find . -type f (
  -iname 'Dockerfile*' -o
  -iname '*.sh' -o
  -iname '*.ps1' -o
  -iname '*.yml' -o
  -iname '*.yaml' -o
  -iname '*.json'
  ) -print0 |
xargs -0 grep -nE 'azureedge.net|dotnetcli.blob.core.windows.net|dotnetbuilds.blob.core.windows.net'

2. Replace the correct channel

  1. Change official-build references to builds.dotnet.microsoft.com.
  2. Change CI-build references to ci.dot.net.
  3. Refresh local copies of dotnet-install.sh and dotnet-install.ps1.
  4. Review pinned setup actions, Azure DevOps tasks, Docker build contexts and internal scripts.
  5. Update proxy and firewall rules before removing the old entries.

Microsoft said users invoking the remotely hosted installation scripts generally did not need to replace the remote script themselves. A locally copied script must be refreshed because it can retain the old hostname indefinitely.

3. Test metadata and downloads

curl -I https://builds.dotnet.microsoft.com/dotnet/health.txt
curl -fsS https://builds.dotnet.microsoft.com/dotnet/release-metadata/releases-index.json | jq empty

Run these checks from the actual build network, not only a developer laptop. Confirm DNS, TLS inspection, proxy authentication, redirects, artifact extraction and checksum or signature verification on both Windows and Linux agents. A successful HTTP response alone does not prove a clean build path.

4. Retire stale copies safely

Update internal mirrors, documentation, cached release metadata and machine images. Keep a rollback or cached-package path until a disposable agent completes a clean build. For air-gapped environments, verify the upstream synchronization job and the continued availability of the internally approved artifact.

What Microsoft identified as unaffected

Microsoft’s initial notice identified dotnet.microsoft.com and download.visualstudio.microsoft.com as unaffected. That statement concerned the specific .NET distribution resources in the notice; it does not mean every Microsoft service using an azureedge.net hostname shared the same status.

Likewise, an Azure CDN from Edgio customer faced a broader service-migration problem, but that is not identical to the .NET download transition. Akamai’s selected-asset purchase did not turn every Edgio-hosted .NET endpoint into an Akamai endpoint.

Why the holiday timing mattered

The warning arrived on December 24–26, when organizations commonly run change freezes, have reduced operations staffing and rely on long-lived container images. A blocked SDK download can stop a release even when production applications are healthy. Network teams may need to approve new domains, security teams may need to validate redirects, and globally distributed teams may not share the same holiday schedule.

CDN hostname or maintained indirection?

Approach Useful when Trade-off
Hard-coded CDN hostname A controlled mirror or tightly pinned artifact workflow needs a stable, transparent source. Provider changes require code, firewall and documentation updates.
Microsoft short link or official script Public instructions and ordinary installations should follow Microsoft’s maintained destination. Redirects add a dependency and may be prohibited by locked-down networks; pin and verify the final artifact when reproducibility matters.
Internal artifact mirror Build continuity, repeatability and limited external connectivity are priorities. You own storage, synchronization, access control, provenance, retention and disaster recovery.

Microsoft’s issue noted that aka.ms/dotnet/... links redirect to the CDN. They reduce exposure to a low-level hostname in new documentation, but test those redirects through your own proxy and allowlist controls.

Permanent supply-chain controls

  • Maintain an inventory of external domains used by build and release systems.
  • Cache approved SDKs and runtimes internally with retention and disaster-recovery policies.
  • Verify signatures, checksums and provenance independently of the download host.
  • Automate egress-policy tests against disposable build agents.
  • Use documented abstraction or maintained links instead of undocumented CDN hostnames.
  • Exercise a build-dependency failure scenario before holiday change freezes.
  • Keep emergency communication and rollback procedures for build infrastructure.

For many .NET teams, an internal cache is a more direct resilience investment than changing public CDN providers. Azure Front Door, Akamai, Cloudflare and Fastly may suit organizations with broader edge-delivery needs, but Microsoft’s documented fix was primarily a hostname and tooling transition—not a requirement to purchase another CDN.

Current status

The documented migration window has passed. Treat builds.dotnet.microsoft.com as the official-build destination and ci.dot.net as the CI-build destination. If an old reference still exists, fix it as technical debt and test the resulting pipeline; do not assume a 2024 emergency remains active.
