On May 23, 2005, LSI Logic announced that founder Wilfred J. “Wilf” Corrigan would step down as president and chief executive officer. Abhi Y. Talwalkar, then an Intel vice president, became LSI Logic’s president and CEO and joined its board, while Corrigan moved into the role of non-executive chairman. The company presented the change as an “orderly succession plan,” not as an abrupt ouster.
What changed on May 23, 2005
The leadership change took effect on the same day it was announced. Corrigan relinquished both operating titles—president and CEO—but remained involved in corporate governance as non-executive chairman. The board appointed Talwalkar to replace him as president and CEO and elected Talwalkar to the LSI Logic board.
Contemporary coverage described the move as an orderly succession. The announcement did not cite a crisis, illness, regulatory matter, shareholder revolt or performance-related dismissal as the reason for the change. It also does not establish the private circumstances of Corrigan’s departure from day-to-day management, so describing it simply as a planned succession is more precise than calling it a forced exit or an outright retirement. EE Times’ May 23, 2005 report records the announcement and the company’s stated framing.
Corrigan’s place in LSI Logic’s history
Corrigan was LSI Logic’s principal founder. He had previously served as president, chairman and CEO of Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corp. Before the 2005 transition, he had been chairman and CEO from LSI Logic’s organization in 1981.

In announcing the succession, LSI’s board credited Corrigan with leading the company from a startup backed by approximately $6 million in venture capital to nearly $2 billion in annual revenue. That growth description was the company’s characterization at the time, rather than an independently established figure in the announcement itself. His move to non-executive chairman preserved a founder’s board-level role while transferring daily operating authority to a new CEO.
Who was Abhi Y. Talwalkar?
Talwalkar—identified as Abhijit Y. Talwalkar in some filings—joined LSI Logic after about 12 years at Intel. Immediately before the move, he was an Intel vice president and co-general manager of the Digital Enterprise Group.

Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group covered business-client, server, storage and communications activities, areas that overlapped with important parts of LSI Logic’s semiconductor business. Talwalkar therefore arrived with experience managing a large chip company’s enterprise-oriented product organizations, rather than moving from an unrelated industry.
His employment documentation made the appointment effective May 23, 2005. LSI’s later filing identifies him as president and CEO from that date, confirming that the change was not merely a future nomination. The employment agreement and SEC filing provide the formal record.

What the move meant for Intel
Talwalkar’s departure also changed Intel’s management structure. Pat Gelsinger assumed sole responsibility for Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group after Talwalkar left for LSI Logic. That made the appointment significant beyond LSI: it was simultaneously a senior-executive transfer out of Intel’s enterprise-chip organization and a succession at a major semiconductor supplier.
Governance details that short reports often miss
- Corrigan did not disappear from the company: he became non-executive chairman after leaving the president and CEO positions.
- Talwalkar received both operating and board authority: he was appointed president and CEO and elected to LSI Logic’s board.
- The effective date was specific: May 23, 2005, rather than an unspecified point during May.
- The titles were combined operating roles: “president and CEO” refers to the two positions Talwalkar assumed together.
Later context: the proposed LSI–Agere combination
The succession became part of LSI Logic’s later corporate history. In the 2006 announcement of a proposed combination with Agere Systems, Talwalkar was slated to remain president and CEO of the combined company. That statement is subsequent context, not part of the May 23, 2005 announcement, and it should not be read as evidence that the merger had already closed. The proposal is documented in an SEC-filed transaction announcement.

Why the succession mattered
The change represented a founder-to-professional-manager transition with continuity built into the structure. Corrigan retained a formal leadership role at board level, while Talwalkar took responsibility for operations and brought experience from Intel’s server, storage, communications and client businesses. On the evidence available from the announcement and subsequent filings, the clearest interpretation is a planned handoff rather than an emergency replacement.
