What the “Google Store turns 26” promotion was
The phrase “Google Store turns 26” came from a Google birthday campaign promoted through the Store. It should not be read as independently verified evidence that the retail storefront itself had existed for 26 years. The reported promotion combined higher trade-in values on selected Pixel purchases, device discounts, Google Store credit, Fitbit offers and a limited-edition keychain. The main sale was reported to run through September 30, 2024. The keychain had an earlier reported deadline of September 27 and was available only while supplies lasted. Those dates are historical, not current purchase terms.

How large were the headline trade-in bonuses?
The largest reported figure was up to $760 toward a Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL or Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Examples in the 2024 coverage included up to $245 for a Pixel 5 and up to $600 for an iPhone 15 Pro. Each figure was a promotional maximum, not a standard value for every owner. Google’s trade-in estimate varies with the exact model, manufacturer, storage capacity, market and condition. The amount shown at checkout is an estimate that can change after the trade-in partner inspects the device. Google’s current rules are described on its trade-in page.
Why the maximum may not be your value
- A cracked screen, damaged body, weak battery, faulty camera or connectivity problem can reduce the credit.
- Selecting the wrong model or storage tier can invalidate the estimate.
- The device must power on and match the condition description supplied at checkout.
- Regional, carrier and configuration restrictions can change eligibility.
What the birthday keychain meant
The free item was a limited-edition Google birthday keychain. It was associated with selected purchases in the Pixel 9, Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2 families. The reported September 27 deadline preceded the broader September 30 sale deadline, and “while supplies lasted” meant inventory could disappear earlier. A historical article or cached advertisement cannot guarantee that a gift will be honored today.

How Google Store trade-ins work now
Google’s standard process, rather than the expired birthday terms, is the relevant path for a current purchase. Google explains the process at store.google.com/us/category/trade_in.
- Add an eligible new Pixel to your Google Store cart and choose the trade-in option.
- Select the old phone, watch, tablet or other supported product, then answer questions about its model and condition.
- Review the estimated value shown at checkout.
- Complete the purchase and follow the shipping instructions for the old device.
- Ensure the trade-in partner receives it generally within 30 days of your new phone arriving.
- Google inspects the device. If it matches your description, the refund goes to the original payment method under the applicable terms.
- If the trade-in is worth more than the new device’s cost, Google says the excess is issued as Store Credit.
Instant Trade-In is available only to a limited subset of customers and generally permits one trade-in per customer. If a device arrives late or differs materially from the checkout description, Google may charge the original payment method for the difference.

Prepare the device before shipping
- Back up your data and perform a factory reset.
- Remove passcodes, Google accounts, activation locks and other security locks.
- Confirm the device powers on and off.
- Photograph its condition and keep the shipping receipt and tracking number.
- Ship it by the stated deadline, not merely by the date you create the label.
Reasons a trade-in can be rejected
Google’s guidance warns that lost or stolen phones, counterfeit devices, phones that do not power on or off, and devices retaining passcodes or account locks may be rejected and may not be returned. Physical damage, an inaccurate description, a wrong model or a missed shipping deadline can also reduce or reverse the expected credit. Returning the new product can affect promotional credit and bundled gifts.

Compare the effective net cost rather than the largest advertised number:
New-device price − confirmed trade-in credit − immediate discount − realistic value of included credit or gift.
A $30 Google Store credit is useful only if you will spend it, and a keychain has no cash-equivalent value. Likewise, a watch advertised as “as low as $0” was not universally free: it depended on trading in an eligible smartwatch whose assessed value covered the price.

When Google’s offer made sense
- You already wanted a Pixel 9 Pro, Pro XL or Pro Fold.
- Your existing phone had a strong eligible trade-in value.
- You preferred an unlocked, manufacturer-sold device and a single transaction.
- You would actually use Google Store credit or the included accessory.
When another route could win
- A private sale might produce more money, although it adds listing, negotiation, payment and shipping work.
- Apple or Samsung trade-in programs may be more competitive for their own devices.
- Carrier promotions can advertise larger discounts, but commonly require a qualifying plan, a new line and 24–36 months of bill credits.
- If you did not need a premium Pixel, buying a less expensive model could lower your total cost more than a large trade-in bonus.
Values change by device and promotion date, so no alternative is always best.

Do not use the 2024 $760 figure, $399 Pixel 8a price, keychain promise or $30 credit as a current offer. Start with Google’s current trade-in page and confirm the estimate, shipping deadline and terms in your cart. Google’s Pixel 9 Pro page has displayed a starting-price signal of $999, but price, stock and configurations must be checked at checkout: Pixel 9 Pro.
The historical birthday promotion was a time-limited September 2024 event. Today’s decision should rest on the live estimate after inspection, the total price of the device you actually choose and whether a private sale or carrier credit produces a lower effective cost.
