The iPhone 17 Pro Max became the leading model in SellCell’s tracked independent trade-in rankings by February 2026, accounting for 11.5% of devices in its top-20 list. That is a striking result for a phone launched only months earlier, but it is not evidence that 11.5% of all traded phones—or all owners—are abandoning it.
The stronger explanation is financial: the phone was retaining more resale value than its predecessor, giving owners an unusually good opportunity to sell while the device was still relatively new.
What “most traded-in phone” actually means
SellCell’s headline describes the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s position within SellCell’s own tracked top-20 ranking of independent trade-in activity. It is not a census of every U.S. phone trade-in.
The top 20 devices represented about 47% of SellCell’s tracked activity, and the underlying analysis used data from 40 independent iPhone buyers. It did not include every transaction handled by Apple, wireless carriers, private sellers, returns desks or resale marketplaces. The result therefore cannot be translated into “11.5% of all phones traded in” or “11.5% of iPhone 17 Pro Max owners sold theirs.”

- Independent buyers: Services such as SellCell compare offers from third-party buyers.
- Apple Trade In: Apple offers credit toward a purchase or other eligible value under its own inspection and eligibility rules: Apple Trade In.
- Carrier upgrade programs: Promotional credits may be paid over time and require a qualifying plan, device and service commitment.
- Private-party sales: Direct sales can produce a different price and involve more payment, shipping and fraud risk.
- Returns and exchanges: A returned or exchanged phone is not the same event as an owner choosing to resell a working device.
The accurate headline is: the iPhone 17 Pro Max became the top model in SellCell’s tracked independent trade-in rankings.
How quickly did the iPhone 17 Pro Max rise?
SellCell reported that the model’s share increased from about 5.1% in late November 2025 to 11.5% by early February 2026. It moved from eighth place to first in roughly 12 weeks—more than doubling its share in that tracked ranking.
That was only a few months after Apple announced the phone on September 9, 2025, opened preorders on September 12 and began availability on September 19. It was not a full ownership-cycle comparison. Apple’s launch announcement is at Apple Newsroom.
The data points to early resale, not a mass rejection
Several details make the trade-in pattern look more like early resale of usable phones than a wave of damaged or unwanted handsets:
- About 86% of iPhone 17 Pro Max trade-ins were categorized as Mint or Good.
- About 76.5% were unlocked.
- The model had depreciated approximately 25.4% after 145 days, compared with roughly 32.5% for the iPhone 16 Pro Max over the same period.
Condition labels are marketplace categories rather than universal grading standards, and the figures do not reveal why any particular owner sold. They do, however, fit a market in which many relatively new devices were still easy to resell.
The main reason: the phone was holding its value unusually well
SellCell’s depreciation comparison is the clearest evidence behind the activity. A mint-condition iPhone 17 Pro Max reportedly lost about 25.4% of its value after 145 days, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max lost about 32.5% over the same period. The newer model therefore retained a larger share of its original value during the measured window.
MacRumors reported a SellCell-derived average resale value of approximately $967.50 for mint-condition iPhone 17 Pro Max units in its February 18, 2026 coverage. That is an average observed resale figure—not a guaranteed offer for your storage tier, condition, country or buyer.
A phone that remains expensive on the used market creates an incentive to sell earlier. An owner may receive substantially more by selling after several months than by waiting until a subsequent iPhone generation arrives and puts additional pressure on used prices. “Selling the peak” is an economic interpretation of the depreciation data, not a survey result proving that every seller timed the market deliberately.

Other plausible reasons owners sell early
Annual upgrade habits and launch incentives
The Pro Max is a premium flagship aimed partly at buyers who upgrade frequently. At launch, Apple listed the U.S. model from $1,199 and cited Apple Trade In credits of $200 to $700 for eligible iPhone 13-or-newer devices, plus selected carrier promotions of up to $1,100 under stated conditions. Those were launch terms and should not be assumed to remain available on a later date.
A carrier’s $1,100 figure is generally a conditional promotional credit—often distributed as monthly bill credits—not $1,100 in cash. Eligibility can depend on the plan, trade-in condition, a new line or installment agreement and remaining with the carrier for the promotional period.
Unlocked-device liquidity
The reported 76.5% unlocked share suggests that many traded devices could be offered to buyers beyond one carrier’s customer base. Unlocked phones are usually easier to place with a wider pool of buyers. The data does not prove that owners unlocked their phones specifically in preparation for sale.

Cash-flow decisions
A costly phone can function like a short-term asset. Selling a still-valuable device may help an owner raise cash, reduce an installment balance or recover part of the original purchase price. SellCell and MacRumors discuss this possibility, but no available figure measures how many sellers did so for financial reasons.
Size, weight and changing preferences
The Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display and weighs 8.22 ounces (233 grams), with an aluminum unibody and Ceramic Shield glass. Apple lists advanced eSIM technology rather than a physical SIM card. Some owners may decide that the largest model is uncomfortable, that they prefer a smaller phone or that they bought more storage and camera capability than they use. These are plausible individual reasons, not established causes of the ranking.
Full specifications are available from Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications.
Strong demand for near-new phones
Trade-in volume reflects supply as well as dissatisfaction. Resellers may be buying inventory, and consumers may want the flagship experience at a discount. The iPhone 17 Pro Max remains a desirable high-end device: Apple positions it with the A19 Pro chip, a vapor chamber, three 48MP Fusion cameras, up to 8x optical-quality zoom and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. A liquid market can therefore indicate that buyers want the phone even as some first owners move on.

What the statistic does not prove
It does not establish:
- A widespread hardware defect, battery-safety issue, overheating problem or camera failure.
- A recall or unusually high return rate.
- Broad buyer regret or owner dissatisfaction.
- That every seller received the reported average resale value.
- That trade-in activity in SellCell’s sample represents the entire U.S. market or other countries.
“Most traded in” is not synonymous with “most disliked.” The available reporting measures ranking, condition, unlock status and resale prices; it does not directly ask every seller why the transaction happened.
Should an iPhone 17 Pro Max owner sell now?
The depreciation pattern makes an early sale financially plausible, but the right decision depends on your actual offer and replacement cost. Compare the complete transaction rather than relying on a headline average.
- Get multiple live quotes. Check Apple, carrier programs, independent buyers and, if appropriate, a private-party listing.
- Match the quote to your device. Storage capacity, cosmetic condition, battery health, unlocked status and any genuine or replaced parts can change the offer.
- Check payoff and account status. Confirm that the phone is paid off, eligible for the chosen channel and free of carrier restrictions.
- Compare net value. Deduct shipping, inspection adjustments, fees and the cost of the replacement phone from the offer.
- Protect the handoff. Photograph the phone, record its condition and understand when payment is released and what happens if inspection lowers the quote.
- Remove your data correctly. Back up first, transfer your number and eSIM, sign out of your Apple Account, disable Find My, erase all content and settings, and verify that Activation Lock is removed.
AppleCare+ or another warranty may improve buyer confidence, but transferability and coverage depend on the applicable plan and region. See AppleCare for current terms.
Should a prospective buyer be worried?
Not because of this statistic alone. Evaluate an iPhone 17 Pro Max on its fit and the specific unit’s condition:
- Can you comfortably use a 6.9-inch, 233-gram phone?
- Will you use the Pro camera and zoom features?
- Is 256GB sufficient, or are you paying for storage you will not need?
- Are you comfortable with eSIM-only hardware?
- Is a used device discounted enough to justify less purchase flexibility?
- Is it unlocked, paid off, free of Activation Lock and associated with a clean IMEI?
When buying used, inspect the display, frame, back glass and camera lenses; check battery health and parts warnings; confirm the serial or IMEI through a reputable process; and do not release payment until the device matches the listing.
How to protect resale value
- Use a case and screen protection to avoid condition downgrades.
- Keep the original box and accessories when practical.
- Maintain battery health and avoid preventable liquid or lens damage.
- Keep the phone unlocked if your carrier permits it.
- Watch pricing before a new iPhone generation changes used-market demand.
- Compare convenience-focused trade-in credit with cash offers; they are different transaction types.
Timing before a new generation is an inference from the reported depreciation pattern, not a guaranteed forecast.
Bottom line
The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s place at the top of SellCell’s ranking is best read as evidence of a highly liquid, relatively value-retaining flagship. Strong resale prices, frequent upgrades, unlocked devices and buyers seeking near-new phones can produce heavy early trade-in activity without implying a product failure. Owners should compare real net offers now, while buyers should judge the phone by its size, features, condition and price—not by the “most traded-in” label.
