Jon Peddie Research’s 94% figure was real, but only for worldwide desktop discrete add-in-board (AIB) GPU shipments in the second quarter of 2025. Nvidia held 94% of that shipment-based market, AMD held 6%, and Intel’s share rounded to 0%. That is not 94% of every GPU in personal computers, phones, consoles, servers, or AI data centers. The latest located historical data puts desktop discrete share closer to 90% Nvidia, 8% AMD, and 1% Intel in Q1 2026.
What the 94% Nvidia figure actually measures
The statistic covers discrete graphics chips shipped for desktop add-in boards—standalone cards such as GeForce, Radeon and Arc products. Jon Peddie Research reported the Q2 2025 result in its PC-GPU market update (JPR’s Q2 2025 report).
It is a shipment measure, generally tracking chips moving to graphics-card manufacturers or channel partners. It is not a count of completed retail purchases, revenue, profit or installed users. Inventory builds, product launches and timing around tariffs can make one quarter look unusually strong.
PCWorld also notes that systems using integrated graphics—including many laptops and small-form-factor PCs—are excluded from this desktop AIB measure (PCWorld’s explanation).

Q2 2025 desktop discrete shipments
The segment totaled approximately 11.6 million desktop add-in boards. The shares reported for the quarter were:
| Vendor | Q2 2025 share | Approximate shipments |
|---|---|---|
| Nvidia | 94% | 10.9 million |
| AMD | 6% | 0.7 million |
| Intel | 0% when rounded | Below roughly 60,000 |
The shipment volumes and historical percentages are reproduced in the Q1 2026 historical table from 3DCenter (3DCenter’s table and notes). Because the percentages are displayed as whole numbers, Intel’s zero means its share fell below the report’s rounding threshold—not that no Arc cards shipped.
Why Intel’s “0%” does not mean Intel has no GPU business
Intel remains a major supplier of integrated graphics built into its processors. Those graphics engines are counted in broader PC-GPU statistics but not in the desktop add-in-board table. Intel’s Arc cards were a small discrete entrant in Q2 2025, while its integrated presence was much larger.

- PCIe 5.0 x16 Riser Cable Included: Built for the latest graphics cards, the included 165mm PCIe 5.0 riser cable supports high-speed data transfer, stable performance, and backward compatibility with PCIe 4.0 and older standards.
- Showcase Your Graphics Card: Mount your GPU vertically and turn it into the centerpiece of your PC build, creating a cleaner, more premium look through tempered glass side panels.
- Wide Case Compatibility: Designed for E-ATX, ATX, and Micro-ATX cases, with support for graphics cards of any length and up to three slots wide. A minimum of four PCI slots is required for installation.
- Tool-Less Position Adjustment: The modular bracket adjusts in two directions, allowing the GPU to move up to 65mm toward the front panel and 30mm toward the side panel for better clearance, spacing, and airflow.
- Heavy-Duty Steel Support with Easier Installation: Reinforced SGCC steel supports large graphics cards and helps reduce sagging or flex. Install the bracket first, then mount your GPU for a smoother setup.
In the same historical data, Intel’s discrete share was approximately 1% in Q3 2025 and Q1 2026, with about 0.1 million units in those quarters. That is still minor beside Nvidia, but materially different from a literal zero.

Different market definitions produce very different rankings:
| Market definition | Nvidia | AMD | Intel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop discrete/AIB shipments, Q2 2025 | 94% | 6% | 0% rounded |
| All PC GPUs, including integrated graphics, Q2 2025 | 24% | 14% | 61% |
| All PC GPUs, including integrated graphics, Q1 2026 | 25% | 20% | 55% |
The broader figures come from the 3DCenter historical compilation. They show why “Nvidia owns 94% of the GPU market” is misleading: Intel led when integrated graphics were included.

AI and high-performance-computing accelerators, smartphone and tablet graphics, and console system-on-chips are separate markets. Nvidia’s data-center position should not be merged with consumer desktop-card shipments, and console GPU arrangements are not retail AIB sales.
How the desktop market changed after Q2 2025
Available rounded shares show a dominant but fluctuating market rather than a permanent 94% level:

For additional context, JPR reported 76.6 million total PC GPU shipments in Q3 2025, a figure that includes integrated graphics. Nvidia’s overall PC-GPU share slipped 0.1 percentage points sequentially while AMD rose 0.9 points and Intel fell 0.8 points (JPR’s Q3 2025 report). Those movements are not directly comparable with the desktop AIB percentages.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Nvidia was so dominant
The data proves the shipment outcome, not one definitive cause. Several factors plausibly contributed:
- Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 50-series launch created a new product cycle and substantial channel attention. Tom’s Hardware reports approximately 44.28 million discrete cards shipped in 2025, up from 34.7 million in 2024, and connects much of the increase with the RTX 50-series generation (Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 market report).
- Nvidia has a mature software and developer ecosystem, including CUDA, alongside broad support for ray tracing, upscaling, creator tools and local AI workloads.
- AMD’s shipment share depends on product availability, launch timing and the ability of board partners to convert announced products into channel inventory.
- Intel Arc remained concentrated in a small, early-stage portion of the discrete market.
These are competitive explanations, not proof that every buyer chose Nvidia for the same reason. Shipment data alone cannot isolate preferences, regional differences or the effect of any individual product.

What the figures mean for AMD and Intel
AMD
AMD’s 6% Q2 2025 AIB share indicates a sharply smaller retail discrete presence than Nvidia’s, but it does not establish that Radeon cards are uncompetitive. Model-level performance, memory capacity, pricing and availability can differ substantially by segment. Unit share also says nothing directly about AMD’s revenue or margins.
Intel
Arc’s rounded-zero result shows how small Intel’s retail discrete position was at that point. It does not erase Intel’s integrated-graphics business or make Arc irrelevant for every use case. Buyers considering an Arc card should check current drivers, game compatibility, media features, retailer availability and performance for the exact model.
What this means for GPU buyers and investors
Market share is context, not a purchasing verdict. Before buying a card, compare:
- Current street price and actual stock, rather than a launch MSRP or shipment headline.
- Game-specific raster and ray-tracing performance at your resolution.
- VRAM capacity and memory bandwidth for the games and applications you use.
- Upscaling, frame-generation, creator and AI features you will actually use.
- Power consumption, connector requirements, case size and cooling.
- Driver maturity, operating-system support and warranty terms.
Nvidia’s product family is listed at Nvidia’s official GeForce page; AMD’s at AMD’s official Radeon page; and Intel’s at Intel’s official Arc page. Manufacturer pages are useful for specifications, not independent value judgments.

For investors, the result signals concentrated competitive power in desktop add-in boards, but it does not by itself forecast revenue, pricing power or earnings. Regional mix, product costs, data-center sales and retail sell-through require separate evidence. A shipment spike can reflect channel inventory rather than equivalent consumer demand.
Bottom line
Nvidia really did account for 94% of worldwide desktop discrete add-in-board shipments in Q2 2025. Intel’s 0% was a rounded, below-threshold share, not proof of zero shipments or zero GPU presence. The headline becomes misleading when it drops the desktop, discrete, shipment and quarter qualifiers—or when it is presented as current. The latest located figures, for Q1 2026, were approximately 90% Nvidia, 8% AMD and 1% Intel in that narrow market.
