Probably not literally. One supply-chain estimate puts Apple’s next-generation A20-family processor at up to $280 per chip, versus a reported $150 for the A19 Pro—about 87% higher, or “nearly double.” A separate Morgan Stanley estimate cited by DigiTimes puts the increase closer to 30%. Neither figure is an Apple-disclosed price, and neither proves that every iPhone 18 will use the same processor or that retail prices will rise by the same amount.
Where the “twice as much” claim comes from
The headline figure comes from Taiwanese supply-chain reporting repeated by AppleInsider and Gadgets 360. AppleInsider described the A20 estimate as up to $280 per unit, roughly 80% above the preceding generation (AppleInsider). Gadgets 360 supplied the commonly cited comparison of approximately $280 for A20/A20 Pro against $150 for A19 Pro (Gadgets 360).
$280 is 87% more than $150, not 100% more. “Twice as much” is therefore headline shorthand for “nearly double,” not a verified two-times invoice. The reports do not publish Apple’s bill of materials or explain fully whether the estimate covers logic silicon alone, a finished package, a particular memory configuration, or a Pro variant.
Why a 2nm A20 could be more expensive
Current reporting associates the A20 family with TSMC’s first-generation N2 (2nm) process, replacing the A19 generation’s reported 3nm production. MacRumors says analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu have linked A20 to N2, while noting that Apple has not confirmed the specification (MacRumors).

New-node wafer and ramp costs
Secondary reports cite approximately $20,000 for a 3nm wafer and $30,000 for a 2nm wafer (Gadgets 360; MacRumors). A wafer price is not a finished-chip price. The result depends on die size, how many dies fit on a wafer, defect rates, testing, packaging, licensing and production allocation. A wafer that costs 50% more does not automatically make each usable processor 50% more expensive.
First-generation 2nm production also carries yield-ramp costs. New transistor structures, described in coverage as nanosheet or gate-all-around technology, can initially produce fewer usable dies until manufacturing stabilizes. Advanced packaging and memory add further cost pressures. AppleInsider specifically identifies early yields, packaging and memory prices as contributors to the high estimate.
Memory and packaging may be part of the story
TechRadar reports that the A20 Pro may use TSMC’s Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) to integrate processor silicon and memory at wafer level (TechRadar). That could shorten the distance between logic and memory, but it may also make production more sensitive to DRAM availability: the two components must be ready together instead of adding memory later. Apple and TSMC have not publicly confirmed this implementation in the cited coverage.

Why another estimate says about 30%
DigiTimes, citing Morgan Stanley, reported that the A20 could cost roughly 30% more than the 3nm A19. The report also said Apple’s large order volumes may have secured more favorable TSMC pricing than smaller customers (DigiTimes).
The two percentages may not measure the same thing. They could differ by processor variant, memory capacity, packaging, contract terms, timing, or whether they describe an early-ramp forecast versus negotiated volume pricing.

Without the underlying methodologies, it is not possible to declare one estimate correct. Both should be treated as supply-chain forecasts rather than confirmed Apple costs.

A20 and A20 Pro are not necessarily the same chip
Coverage alternates among “A20,” “A20 Pro” and “A20/A20 Pro,” which makes direct comparisons risky. The strongest cost reporting focuses on the higher-end A20 Pro expected for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. MacRumors describes those models as the likely users of the reported 2nm processor (MacRumors).
Current reports expect Pro models in fall 2026, with some base models potentially arriving later, but Apple has not announced the lineup, chip allocation or pricing. Do not assume that a base iPhone 18 will carry a $280 processor, or that every model will use the same package.

Could this raise iPhone 18 prices?
A higher component cost can pressure pricing or margins, but it does not translate one-for-one into retail price. Apple could absorb part of the increase, raise only Pro or Pro Max prices, charge more for higher storage tiers, reduce costs elsewhere, or use different processors between models.

The A20 may also be only one part of a broader bill-of-materials increase. MacRumors cites a Counterpoint analysis projecting nearly $300 higher component costs for a 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max, with DRAM and NAND among the largest contributors; display and miscellaneous component changes could offset some of that increase (MacRumors). DigiTimes separately reported expectations of more than 50% sequential DRAM price increases for the relevant period, another forecast rather than settled pricing (DigiTimes).
Consequently, a rumored $130 increase in chip cost would not mean a $130 increase in an iPhone’s retail price. Regional currency movements, taxes, tariffs, storage choices and Apple’s margin decisions also matter.

Buy a current iPhone when price certainty matters
Existing models have known prices, availability and performance. This is the rational choice if you need a phone now or do not want to budget around unconfirmed component estimates. Official current models are listed at Apple’s iPhone page.

Wait when efficiency or new features matter most
Waiting may make sense if you value the potential efficiency, performance or on-device AI benefits associated with a 2nm design. Those benefits remain expectations, not confirmed iPhone benchmarks, and launch pricing and availability are unknown.
Treat Pro and non-Pro decisions separately
If Apple reserves the most expensive package for Pro models, the price exposure may be concentrated in iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. A non-Pro model could face a different chip and cost structure, but that allocation is not confirmed.
Use trade-in values as a separate calculation
Apple Trade In can reduce an upgrade’s effective cost, but values vary by model, condition, storage, geography and date. Check the live estimate at Apple’s Trade In page rather than assuming today’s value will remain after launch.

The defensible conclusion is that Apple’s A20 Pro may cost substantially more than A19 Pro because of 2nm manufacturing, ramp economics, packaging and memory. “Twice as much” is an approximation based on the highest public estimate—not a confirmed price—and the impact on iPhone 18 pricing remains uncertain.
