Perplexity was reportedly seeking about $500 million at an $8 billion-or-higher valuation in October 2024, but that was a fundraising target—not a confirmed completed round. The company’s next reported financing was $500 million at a $9 billion valuation in December 2024. Subsequent reported rounds put Perplexity at $14 billion, $18 billion and, by September 2025, $20 billion.
What the October 2024 report actually said
On October 20, 2024, TechCrunch summarized a Wall Street Journal report that Perplexity AI was in talks to raise approximately $500 million at a valuation of $8 billion or more. Reuters’ account also described discussions rather than a signed transaction. Perplexity declined to comment.
That distinction matters. A target valuation is a negotiating position that can change, be reduced or fail to close. There is no confirmed completed Perplexity round at the October terms, so it is inaccurate to say the company “raised $500 million at an $8 billion valuation.”
The figures attached to the report
- Proposed capital: approximately $500 million.
- Proposed valuation: $8 billion or more.
- Prior reported valuation: about $3 billion after a SoftBank investment during summer 2024.
- Usage: roughly 15 million queries per day.
- Revenue: approximately $50 million in annualized revenue, an estimate based on recent sales rather than audited financial statements, according to Reuters.
An $8 billion target would have been more than 2.5 times the reported $3 billion mark. Earlier 2024 financing had put Perplexity near $1 billion, illustrating how quickly private-market pricing was moving. (TechCrunch; Bloomberg)

Did Perplexity ever close the $8 billion round?
No confirmed $8 billion closing has been reported. In December 2024, TechCrunch reported that Perplexity had closed a $500 million round at a $9 billion valuation, reportedly led by Institutional Venture Partners. The company again declined to comment. This was a separate, later transaction—not proof that the October proposal closed unchanged.
Perplexity’s reported valuation timeline
The sequence below separates completed-round reports from early discussions and third-party database entries.
| Date | Reported event | Reported valuation | Status and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| January–April 2024 | Earlier financing milestone | About $1 billion | Reported private-market valuation |
| June 2024 | SoftBank investment | About $3 billion | Reported valuation |
| October 20, 2024 | Proposed $500 million fundraising | $8 billion or more | Talks/target; no confirmed close (TechCrunch) |
| December 2024 | Reported $500 million round | $9 billion | Reported close (TechCrunch) |
| March 20, 2025 | Talks to raise up to $1 billion | Up to $18 billion | Early discussions; terms could change (TechCrunch; Bloomberg) |
| June 2025 | Reported $500 million investment led by Accel | $14 billion | Reported financing (Bloomberg Law) |
| July 17, 2025 | Reported $100 million financing extension | $18 billion | Reported financing (Bloomberg) |
| September 2025 | Reported $200 million financing | $20 billion | Reported round (Reuters report) |
| September 26, 2025 | Series E-6 database entry | Approximately $20.39 billion post-money | Forge private-market record; corroborative, not a company announcement (Forge) |
Funding databases can record extensions, multiple closings or different share classes. The figures should therefore not be added together without defining whether the total means announced capital, legal closings or database-recorded issuances.

What Perplexity was building
Perplexity presents itself as an AI-native search and answer engine: users ask questions conversationally and receive responses with citations. Its product has used multiple large language models and web-search infrastructure rather than relying on one proprietary foundation model. The company’s official product is described at Perplexity.ai.
By 2025, Perplexity was expanding into enterprise search and an “agentic” browser initiative called Comet. Its official enterprise offering is at Perplexity Enterprise. These initiatives show expansion, but the available reporting does not establish their eventual profitability or market share.
Why investors were willing to pay rapidly higher prices
A possible new search interface
Investors viewed AI search as a potential challenge to Google’s conventional search model. Perplexity’s reported query growth and conversational answers supported a thesis that an AI company could become an important interface for web discovery, advertising, commerce or enterprise knowledge retrieval. Those are investor-thesis interpretations, not a disclosed valuation formula.
Growth and a strong AI funding market
The October 2024 report paired roughly 15 million daily queries with an estimated $50 million annualized revenue run rate. Bloomberg later reported approximately $100 million in annual recurring revenue in March 2025. Sacra estimated about $148 million in annualized revenue by June 2025, but that is an analyst estimate rather than audited company revenue (Sacra).
Perplexity also attracted prominent strategic and venture investors, including SoftBank, Nvidia-related backers, Jeff Bezos, Institutional Venture Partners and Accel. In a market assigning very high prices to leading AI companies, that investor demand helped make successive private rounds possible.

Competition from much larger platforms
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Search by December 2024. Anthropic added web search to Claude, and Google began testing AI Mode by March 2025. These companies can bundle search-like features into widely used assistants and ecosystems, putting pressure on Perplexity’s differentiation (TechCrunch).
Publisher, copyright and data-access disputes
Publishers accused Perplexity of scraping, plagiarism and unauthorized use of content. Reuters reported that The New York Times sent a cease-and-desist notice in October 2024. TechCrunch also described disputes with publishers and a later revenue-sharing effort (Reuters; TechCrunch).
Expensive operating economics
An AI search service must pay for model inference, search and crawling infrastructure, data access or licensing, engineering, user acquisition, and—especially for enterprise customers—security and support. Rapid revenue growth does not show that those costs have been covered, and no authoritative disclosure here establishes that Perplexity was profitable.
Private valuation is not a liquid market price
The reported path from $3 billion to $9 billion, $14 billion, $18 billion and $20 billion reflects negotiated preferred-equity financings. It is not the same as a public-market capitalization, and it does not mean employees or other holders could sell freely at that number. Forge’s data should be read as private-market information, not as a tradable quote (Forge).

What the $8 billion headline means now
The October 2024 figure is best understood as an authentic report of fundraising discussions that were quickly superseded. It was not a completed $8 billion round and is no longer Perplexity’s latest reported valuation. By September 2025, reported financings had reached $20 billion, with Forge recording a nearby approximately $20.39 billion post-money entry.
For readers evaluating the company or its products, the sensible takeaway is not that a valuation proves profitability or product-market fit. It shows how aggressively investors repriced a fast-growing AI-search company while competition, content rights and infrastructure economics remained unresolved. Perplexity Pro details are available on the company’s official page; pricing and included models can change.
