Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: Reporting in September 2022 identified Peter Thiel’s investment firm, Thiel Capital, as a backer of 28, a cycle-tracking and wellness app created by the founders of conservative women’s publication Evie Magazine. The investment does not prove that Thiel personally runs the app, that he directed its medical claims, or that 28 shares data with Palantir or law enforcement. The practical questions are narrower and more important: what method does 28 actually use, how reliable is it for avoiding pregnancy, and what happens to intimate reproductive information entered into a commercial app?
The original story is historical; there is no independently verified new August 2026 investment announcement in the available record. 28 remains listed in Apple’s U.S. App Store under 28 Wellness, LLC, with paid subscriptions and developer-supplied privacy disclosures.
What 28 is
28 has been marketed under names including 28, 28 by Evie and 28.co. It was created by Evie Magazine founders Brittany Hugoboom/Martinez and Gabriel Hugoboom. The product combines period and symptom logging with education about menstrual-cycle phases, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle.
That description covers several different products people often conflate:

- A period journal that records bleeding and symptoms.
- A wellness service that recommends content or routines by cycle phase.
- Fertility-awareness education that may help users identify fertile days.
- A contraceptive tool, which requires a validated method, clear instructions and a plan for fertile-day protection.
Cycle tracking alone does not establish that an app is a contraceptive. The key question is whether 28 identifies fertile days using recognized signs such as cervical mucus and basal body temperature, or mainly predicts dates from past cycles. The original 2022 reporting described a “cycle-based” wellness program and connected its messaging to opposition to hormonal contraception, but it did not establish that 28 is an FDA-cleared contraceptive application.
Apple’s current listing identifies the product as a Health & Fitness app from 28 Wellness, LLC (storefront wording may vary), rated 18+ and compatible with iOS 14.0 or later in the surfaced listing. It is free to download with paid subscription offers; displayed prices can vary by country, account and promotion, so the U.S. price should be checked in the U.S. App Store listing at signup.
What Thiel actually backed
A September 6, 2022 Vice report, later summarized by Futurism, said Thiel Capital was backing the company behind 28. That supports the precise formulation “Thiel Capital backed 28.” It does not establish:
- the investment amount;
- that Peter Thiel personally wrote or directed the check;
- that Thiel invested in Evie Magazine itself rather than the app company;
- that Thiel medically endorses 28’s recommendations; or
- that the investor has access to individual users’ health records.
No complete cap table or documented investment motive is supplied by the cited reporting. Concerns about a data-related rationale are therefore a reason to ask for evidence, not proof of what Thiel intended.

Why Evie Magazine’s connection matters
Evie is not a neutral clinical institution. Its editorial identity has been associated with “traditional femininity” and culture-war positions. Reporting has criticized articles and commentary involving abortion, hormonal contraception, vaccines and transgender issues, with some claims characterized by critics as pseudoscientific or conspiratorial.
Those criticisms must be kept separate from the app. A contributor’s article is not automatically a medical claim made by 28, and an app recommendation is not disproved merely because its publisher has a political identity. The relevant test is whether a specific health claim is sourced, clinically plausible and presented with appropriate limits.
For example, the original coverage cited an Evie article about Argentina and abortion that it described as factually false. That is an attributed criticism of published material, not evidence that every feature of 28 is false or that the app has committed a crime.
What medical evidence says about fertility awareness
Fertility-awareness-based methods (FABMs) are medically recognized. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists describes methods that use cycle timing and signs such as cervical mucus and basal body temperature to identify potentially fertile days.

| Use scenario | ACOG figures for FABMs | What it means for 28 |
|---|---|---|
| Perfect use | Fewer than 1–5 pregnancies per 100 users in the first year | These are method-specific figures for fertility-awareness methods generally, not a performance result for 28. |
| Typical use | Approximately 12–24 pregnancies per 100 users in the first year | Missed observations, incorrect interpretation and unprotected sex on fertile days can substantially change outcomes. |
The CDC treats fertility-awareness methods as a category that can include cycle monitoring, fertility signs and some FDA-cleared contraceptive software. That classification does not make every period calendar or wellness app FDA-cleared or clinically validated.
Why calendar predictions can fail
- Irregular or anovulatory cycles make date-based estimates less dependable.
- Postpartum recovery, breastfeeding and amenorrhea can change bleeding and ovulation patterns.
- Perimenopause, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, illness, stress, travel and medication changes can complicate interpretation.
- Recently stopping hormonal contraception can make early cycles difficult to interpret.
People trying to avoid pregnancy need explicit fertile-day instructions and a protection plan, such as abstinence or barrier contraception. FABMs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
Does 28 replace birth control?
There is no responsible blanket answer without the app’s current methodology and labeling. A cycle journal is not a contraceptive. A fertility-awareness program may be used for pregnancy avoidance only when it teaches a defined method, explains uncertainty and tells users what to do during fertile days.
The original reporting portrayed 28’s messaging as skeptical of hormonal birth control and suggested that users might be encouraged to move away from it. That political or editorial framing is different from proving that 28 itself guarantees contraception. Anyone considering stopping hormonal contraception should have an alternative plan and discuss the change with a qualified clinician, particularly with irregular cycles, postpartum status, PCOS, perimenopause or a strong need to avoid pregnancy.

How strong are the nutrition and hormone claims?
General advice to eat adequately, exercise safely and track symptoms may be reasonable. Stronger claims require stronger evidence. Statements that a precise diet or exercise routine for a particular cycle phase will “balance hormones,” reverse contraceptive side effects, improve fertility or treat disease should be traceable to accessible clinical research, not just coaching language or editorial content.
The 2022 coverage said the scientific basis of 28’s recommendations was unclear. That is a criticism of the evidence presented at the time, not proof that every recommendation is useless. Readers should look for named authors, peer-reviewed citations, study populations, outcomes and limitations. Advice from a clinician is not interchangeable with content from a magazine writer or wellness coach.

Deleting an app does not necessarily delete an account, cloud backup, exported file or third-party copy. Review Apple Health or other integrations, avoid entering information you do not need, use a strong unique password and consider whether a shared phone or family account exposes notifications or records.
The post-Roe legal environment increases the stakes. A 2024 paper hosted by the Federal Trade Commission documents users’ concerns about period-app privacy and reproductive-data access. It does not show that 28 has sold data, given it to Palantir, or provided it to law enforcement. Those would require documentary evidence.
Separate the verified facts from speculation
| Claim | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|
| “Peter Thiel backs the app” | Useful shorthand only when clarified: reporting identified Thiel Capital as a backer in 2022. |
| “28 is the rhythm method” | Not established without verifying the app’s actual current methodology. |
| “The app is dangerous” | Specify whether the concern is pregnancy risk, privacy, misinformation or political messaging. |
| “Thiel wants reproductive data” | A hypothesis or concern, not a documented motive. |
| “The app is pseudoscience” | Identify the particular unsupported claim and the evidence for the criticism. |
Who should be cautious
28 may be useful as a cycle journal or source of general education for someone comfortable with its politics, subscriptions and data practices. Extra caution is warranted for anyone who needs highly reliable pregnancy prevention, has irregular or medically complex cycles, is postpartum or breastfeeding, is changing contraception, or lives where pregnancy-related conduct may attract legal scrutiny.
Before relying on any app, ask whether it gives a defined fertility-awareness protocol, what it says to do on fertile days, whether it distinguishes symptom tracking from contraception, and whether its privacy controls match your risk tolerance. If the answer is unclear, treat it as a diary—not as birth control.
