The clearest public examples show why the headline number—such as “16 weeks”—is only one part of the financial picture.
This comparison covers publicly documented U.S. packages and recently reported offers from Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Salesforce. Historical terms are dated explicitly; reported or employee-sourced figures are not presented as guaranteed company policy.
What severance actually includes
“Severance” is often used as shorthand for several separate benefits. Keep these components distinct when comparing an offer:
- Notice pay: salary during a working or non-working notice period. Statutory WARN pay is not automatically severance.
- Severance pay: salary continuation or a lump-sum separation payment, usually based on base salary.
- Bonus and PTO: earned, prorated or discretionary bonus treatment and payment for eligible unused vacation.
- Equity: vested shares, vesting during notice, accelerated restricted stock units (RSUs), options and performance awards.
- Benefits and services: health-plan premiums or COBRA support, outplacement, coaching and immigration assistance.
- Conditions: a release of claims, confidentiality, non-disparagement, restrictive covenants, repayment clauses and signing deadlines.
A useful comparison is total cash transition value = notice-period pay + severance + eligible bonus + PTO payout. Equity and benefits should be valued separately, and you should not add items together unless your separation documents say they are cumulative.

Quick comparison: publicly documented and reported terms
U.S. figures unless noted. “Historical” means the company announcement is from an earlier layoff. “Reported” means a reputable report or employee account rather than a universal company policy.
| Company and program | Salary or cash terms | Notice or internal mobility | Healthcare and career support | Equity, bonus and PTO | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon, January 2026 workforce reduction | No universal dollar amount or formula publicly stated | Most affected U.S. employees generally received 90 days to seek another internal role before transition support | Severance, outplacement and applicable health-insurance benefits named, with details determined individually | Not publicly specified in the announcement | Official company announcement |
| Google, January 2023 U.S. layoffs | 16 weeks of salary plus two additional weeks for each additional year of service | Full notification period, minimum 60 days | Six months of healthcare, job-placement services and immigration support | At least 16 weeks of accelerated Google Stock Unit vesting; relevant 2022 bonus and accrued vacation paid | Official historical package |
| Meta, November 2022 U.S. layoffs | 16 weeks of base pay plus two weeks for every year of service; no cap stated | Notice period for visa holders | Six months of healthcare and three months of career support | Remaining PTO paid; November 15, 2022 vesting paid to impacted employees | Official historical package |
| Microsoft, 2026 programs | Earlier reported standard: 12 weeks of base pay plus two weeks per year, varying by tenure and level. Some 2026 employee reports cite up to 39 weeks | Voluntary buyout and involuntary layoffs are separate programs | Terms vary by program and agreement | Individual offer controls; no single public formula | Reported; 39-week figure is employee-reported |
| Salesforce, January 2023 layoffs | Public reports described a minimum of nearly five months of pay | Not stated in the cited report | Health insurance and career resources reported | Other transition benefits reported; current formula not established | Historical reported benchmark |
Amazon: 90 days to look internally, not 90 days of severance
Amazon’s January 28, 2026 announcement concerning approximately 16,000 roles described a process rather than a fixed payout. Most affected U.S.-based employees were generally given 90 days to search for another internal position. Employees who did not move into another role would receive transition support, including severance, outplacement and applicable health-insurance benefits. The announcement did not publish a company-wide dollar amount or tenure formula. See Amazon’s announcement.
The practical value of this model is time: an internal transfer can avoid termination altogether, while the eventual cash and benefits depend on the employee’s agreement and location.
Google: a detailed 16-week-plus benchmark from 2023
For the U.S. reduction announced January 20, 2023, Google said affected employees would receive their full notification period, with a minimum of 60 days, followed by severance starting at 16 weeks of salary. The formula added two weeks for each additional year at Google. Google also announced at least 16 weeks of accelerated Google Stock Unit vesting, payment of the relevant 2022 bonus and remaining vacation, six months of healthcare, job-placement services and immigration support. The details are in Google’s January 2023 message.

Meta: base pay plus an uncapped tenure formula in 2022
Meta’s November 9, 2022 U.S. announcement specified 16 weeks of base pay plus two additional weeks for every year of service, with no cap stated in that announcement. It also covered remaining PTO, six months of healthcare and three months of career support. Impacted employees received the November 15, 2022 vesting, and Meta described immigration support and a notice period for visa holders. Read the official Meta announcement.
The formula is a historical benchmark. Later programs may use different eligibility rules, caps, vesting treatment or benefit periods.
Microsoft: do not combine a buyout with a layoff package
In April 2026, reporting described a voluntary buyout offered to a defined group of U.S. employees, reportedly including employees at senior-director level and below and some whose age plus years of service totaled at least 70. A voluntary buyout is an election to leave, often with a deadline and eligibility limits; it is not the same as an involuntary reduction in force. Forbes’ report also described an earlier standard formula of 12 weeks of base pay plus two weeks per year of employment, with variation by tenure and level.
Separate 2026 employee-reported material described offers reaching up to 39 weeks of base pay for some U.S. employees. That maximum is not an official universal policy; it should be treated as reported evidence and verified against the individual offer.
Microsoft’s proxy disclosures illustrate why executive data cannot be used for ordinary employees. A named-executive plan can provide 12 months of base salary and target incentive, prorated incentive, continued vesting of certain awards, healthcare and outplacement—terms unavailable to most employees. See the 2025 proxy disclosure and earlier separation-agreement disclosure.
Salesforce and companies without a confirmed current formula
Reports around Salesforce’s January 2023 layoffs described a minimum of nearly five months of pay, health insurance, career resources and other transition benefits. That is a historical benchmark, not a confirmed universal 2026 policy.
Publicly available material used for this comparison did not establish sufficiently clear, current rank-and-file formulas for Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Oracle, Intel or Adobe. Their packages should be assessed from the actual layoff notice, separation agreement, WARN filing or company statement rather than generalized internet claims.

Notice and termination date
Identify the last day you actively work and the official employment end date. Salary during paid notice may preserve salary, benefits and equity vesting; a lump-sum severance payment may not. A notice period can also affect unemployment eligibility and immigration timelines.
Bonus and PTO
Ask whether the payment is guaranteed, prorated, discretionary or contingent on being employed on the payout date. “Accrued vacation” is different from sick leave or personal days, and state law can determine what must be paid. Google’s 2023 package included the relevant 2022 bonus and remaining vacation; Meta’s 2022 package included remaining PTO.
Equity
Separate vested shares from future awards. Confirm whether RSUs vest through the notice period, whether any acceleration is a fixed number of weeks, and how options, performance shares, refresh grants and employee stock-purchase plans are treated. Google’s 2023 announcement expressly provided at least 16 weeks of accelerated GSU vesting. Tax withholding, trading restrictions and the valuation date can materially change the value.
Healthcare
“Six months of healthcare” can mean continued plan participation, employer-paid premiums or COBRA reimbursement. Confirm the coverage end date, whether dependents, dental and vision are included, whether the subsidy is taxable and when COBRA materials arrive. Compare COBRA with a spouse’s plan and an Affordable Care Act marketplace plan before enrolling.

Outplacement and immigration assistance
Check whether coaching, resume review, job leads or placement services are already included before paying for a separate provider. Visa holders should confirm the legal employment end date, grace-period implications and whether the company will fund immigration advice.

| Voluntary buyout | Involuntary layoff |
|---|---|
| Employee elects to leave | Company selects the employee |
| May offer enhanced terms and a decision deadline | Usually follows a termination date and separation agreement |
| Eligibility may be limited by role, age, tenure or location | Selection may depend on role, team, location or business need |
| Participation may be capped or the offer withdrawn | WARN, consultation or local-notice rules may apply |
Read the program name and election conditions carefully. A buyout can have different tax, unemployment and release consequences from a forced reduction in force.
Why U.S. packages do not automatically apply abroad
Outside the United States, statutory redundancy formulas, mandatory notice, consultation, works councils, collective bargaining, garden leave and immigration rules can control the result. Google’s 2023 announcement said non-U.S. employees would be supported according to local practices and laws. Do not apply a U.S. weeks-of-pay figure to another country without checking local documents.
Checklist before signing
- Termination date and last active-working day.
- Length, status and payment method of any notice period.
- Gross severance amount, installments and withholding.
- Bonus definition: earned, target, prorated or discretionary.
- PTO calculation and which leave categories are excluded.
- RSU, option, performance-share and employee-stock-plan treatment.
- Healthcare end date, premium subsidy and dependent coverage.
- Outplacement, coaching and immigration benefits.
- Release of claims, confidentiality and non-disparagement terms.
- Non-solicitation, non-compete and other restrictive covenants.
- Repayment or clawback provisions.
- Age-discrimination waiver language, signing deadline and revocation period.
- Effect on unemployment eligibility and reference or employment-verification letters.
For a large equity balance, restrictive covenant or potential discrimination claim, have a licensed employment lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction review the agreement. Tax advice may also be worthwhile when payment timing or equity is substantial.
How to judge whether an offer is generous
Compare the complete package, not just the largest salary multiplier:
- guaranteed weeks of base pay and any tenure multiplier;
- whether there is a cap;
- paid notice and time before employment ends;
- equity vesting or acceleration;
- bonus and PTO treatment;
- healthcare duration and premium coverage;
- internal-placement opportunities;
- outplacement and immigration support; and
- the restrictions and tax consequences attached to signing.
A package with fewer severance weeks can be worth more if it includes paid non-working notice, valuable vesting or fully paid healthcare. Conversely, a high maximum may be unavailable to a short-tenured employee or may replace other benefits.
The Bottom Line
The most defensible conclusion is not that one company always pays the most. Amazon’s 2026 announcement emphasizes internal mobility before transition support; Google and Meta offer detailed but historical 2023 and 2022 benchmarks; Microsoft’s buyout, reported standard formula and employee-reported offers are distinct; and Salesforce’s public figure is historical. Your actual separation agreement—not a headline number—determines the cash, equity, benefits, timing and restrictions you receive.
