Dell Technologies and Nutanix created a channel-led alternative to VMware built around Nutanix AHV software and Dell infrastructure. The offer has two distinct designs: the turnkey Dell XC Plus hyperconverged appliance, and Nutanix Cloud Platform running with independently scalable Dell PowerFlex or PowerStore storage. It gives customers and partners another migration path after Broadcom’s VMware acquisition, but it is not a drop-in replacement or proof that every VMware estate will cost less to move.

What Dell and Nutanix announced

On May 21, 2024, the companies announced joint engineering, sales, support, services and partner enablement. Dell sales teams and channel partners were to sell the solutions worldwide. The announcement was more than a hardware-reseller arrangement: it combined Nutanix Cloud Platform and its AHV hypervisor with Dell server and storage products, with defined responsibilities for transactions and customer support.

The original portfolio had two tracks:

Offering Architecture Best-fit use Scaling model
Dell XC Plus Dell PowerEdge servers with Nutanix Cloud Platform software and AHV Turnkey HCI, VDI, branch or remote sites, and standardized general virtualization Add HCI nodes, with compute and storage growing together
Nutanix Cloud Platform with Dell PowerFlex Nutanix software and AHV with Dell PowerFlex external storage Large, storage-intensive or mission-critical environments Scale compute and storage independently

Nutanix’s technical explanation of the deployment choices is available at its XC Plus and PowerFlex overview.

Why VMware became the target

Broadcom completed its approximately $69 billion acquisition of VMware and subsequently changed VMware’s portfolio, commercial model and partner relationships. That prompted many customers and resellers to reassess renewal costs, product direction and vendor dependence. CRN reported that Dell had historically driven about 40% of VMware revenue through several relationships and ended its VMware agreement in February 2024, two years earlier than planned, citing the acquisition. The figure and the report’s description of price increases should be treated as CRN’s reporting, not as an independently audited market statistic.

Dell and Nutanix positioned their collaboration to capture that reassessment. The practical proposition is to replace vSphere for selected workloads with AHV, while retaining Dell as the infrastructure supplier and using a channel partner for assessment and migration. It does not establish that all VMware customers are leaving, that AHV is feature-identical to vSphere, or that Nutanix is universally cheaper.

How the two architectures differ

XC Plus: integrated HCI

XC Plus packages PowerEdge hardware and Nutanix software as a coordinated appliance. The appeal is a single, repeatable operating model: deploy nodes, manage the virtual environment through Nutanix tools, and use AHV as the hypervisor. Nutanix describes this model as suitable where simplicity matters, including VDI and remote or branch-office deployments. It is most attractive when compute and storage demand are reasonably balanced and sites benefit from a standard configuration.

PowerFlex or PowerStore: disaggregated infrastructure

External storage separates the growth of compute from the growth of capacity and performance. That can suit databases, large enterprise applications and organizations whose storage requirements rise faster than CPU or memory. The trade-off is a more involved design: storage networks, validated software combinations, monitoring and support boundaries require careful planning.

PowerFlex was the first Dell external-storage platform integrated with Nutanix Cloud Platform. Nutanix announced general availability of Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure for external storage with PowerFlex on April 30, 2025 (Nutanix announcement). Dell announced PowerStore support through Dell Private Cloud with NCI 7.6 in July 2026 (Dell announcement). PowerStore was therefore not part of the original 2024 launch.

Dell and Nutanix describe PowerStore integration as supporting automated AHV deployment, Prism integration, Dell system-level hardware support, non-disruptive upgrades and single-drive scaling. Those are vendor claims; buyers should validate the exact release, hardware and feature support in writing.

What the channel strategy changes

Dell said it would take an end-to-end role for XC Plus covering sales, transactions, support and services, while enabling Dell channel partners. Nutanix’s partner program also promotes deal registration, incentives, recurring-revenue opportunities and a VMware-to-Nutanix migration offer; availability and terms vary by geography and date (Nutanix partner page).

  • Nutanix partners: gain Dell infrastructure and account coverage.
  • Services firms and MSPs: can attach discovery, sizing, conversion, implementation, disaster-recovery design, support and managed operations.
  • Customers: can buy a bundled architecture rather than separately integrating a hypervisor, servers and storage.

Channel reach does not eliminate commercial conflicts. Ask for the VMware-renewal baseline, at least one alternative design, a workload-by-workload recommendation and disclosure of vendor incentives or deal-registration benefits.

Timeline from announcement to current availability

Date Development
May 21, 2024 Dell and Nutanix announce XC Plus and the PowerFlex-based joint solution, plus joint sales, support and services (Nutanix release).
August 14, 2024 CRN details Dell’s channel role, XC Plus order activity and the VMware-displacement strategy (CRN report).
April 30, 2025 Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure for external storage with Dell PowerFlex reaches general availability.
July 2026 PowerStore support arrives through Dell Private Cloud with NCI 7.6.

Who should consider each option

XC Plus is a logical starting point when

  • You want a turnkey HCI appliance and a standardized operating model.
  • Compute and storage are expected to grow at similar rates.
  • You are consolidating VDI, branch sites or general-purpose virtualization.
  • An integrated Dell-and-Nutanix support arrangement is more valuable than component-level flexibility.

External storage merits evaluation when

  • Storage and compute will grow at materially different rates.
  • Large databases or storage-heavy applications dominate capacity planning.
  • You already have, or strategically want, PowerFlex or PowerStore.
  • You want Nutanix management and AHV without being limited to HCI node ratios.

The migration reality check

AHV is an alternative hypervisor and platform, not a guaranteed feature-for-feature vSphere clone. A migration may require:

  • VM conversion or replication, pilot testing and a rollback plan.
  • Redesign of network segmentation, security policies and automation.
  • Revalidation of backup, replication and disaster-recovery workflows.
  • Application-vendor certification on AHV.
  • Replacement or adaptation of VMware scripts, monitoring and orchestration.
  • Staff training and revised troubleshooting procedures.
  • Review of licenses priced per host, socket, core or virtual machine.

External storage can improve capacity planning but adds network, firmware, qualification and cross-vendor support dependencies. Existing Dell hardware is not automatically reusable; model, firmware, topology, storage configuration, Nutanix qualification and support contracts determine eligibility.

Questions to put in a reseller’s proposal

  1. Which Dell, Nutanix, AHV, NCI and storage versions are validated together?
  2. Who owns first-line support when a fault crosses the Dell–Nutanix boundary?
  3. Which replication, backup, encryption, networking, microsegmentation and disaster-recovery features are licensed?
  4. Can the proposed design import or replicate the current VMware workloads?
  5. Which applications require AHV certification?
  6. What hardware, parallel-running, migration, retraining and contract-termination costs are included in the three- and five-year total?
  7. What is the exit plan if some workloads later need another hypervisor or public cloud?

Pricing and alternatives

No public list prices were identified for XC Plus, the PowerFlex or PowerStore integrations, or their bundled software and services. These are quote-based enterprise products; configuration, capacity, software edition, support, geography and contract term determine the price. Request a configuration-specific quote rather than relying on an estimated online figure.

Staying with VMware Cloud Foundation may minimize disruption for organizations deeply invested in vSphere tooling and certified applications. Other evaluations may include Microsoft Hyper-V or Azure Local, HPE VM Essentials, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and KVM-based platforms. Their current packaging and economics require separate, current comparisons.

What this partnership proves—and what it does not

The collaboration makes Nutanix-based virtualization more accessible to Dell customers and gives Dell partners a packaged VMware alternative. Its strongest value is the combination of AHV, Dell infrastructure and services capacity—not a blanket promise of lower cost or effortless conversion. The right choice depends on workload compatibility, storage-growth pattern, support ownership, migration budget and the organization’s willingness to operate a different virtualization platform.
