Its launch promotion was $3.99 per month when billed annually: $47.88 paid upfront for 12 months before applicable taxes. The plan covers up to six total users, including the subscriber, and is separate from the broader Proton Family bundle. Because Proton described $3.99 as a limited-time offer and its current pages do not reliably show a universal US checkout price, confirm today’s price, renewal amount, taxes, currency, and billing terms before paying.

What the $3.99 figure really meant
The headline rate was not a normal month-to-month subscription. It was the monthly equivalent of an annual subscription: $3.99 multiplied by 12 equals $47.88 charged at once. Proton presented that amount as a limited-time reduction from an equivalent $4.99 monthly rate, or $59.88 for a year.
Those are launch-announcement figures, not a promise that every customer in every country still receives them. Before checkout, distinguish:

What six people receive
Pass Family is based on Pass Plus. Proton’s launch description included these premium capabilities for each member:

How household sharing works
Private vaults stay private
Each invited person has an individual Proton Pass account and private vaults. Joining the family does not automatically expose every saved password to every other member.

Shared vaults are selective
Create a shared vault for credentials that several people genuinely need—such as a streaming service, household utility, Wi-Fi network, insurance portal, or school account—and invite only the relevant members. A shared vault is different from handing over an entire private vault.
Administrators manage membership
The owner, and potentially a second designated administrator under Proton’s launch description, handles invitations, membership and subscription administration. Confirm the current permission labels in your account, particularly before making another person responsible for billing or access.

A safer rollout
- Set up the plan and invite members with Proton accounts, if required by the current invitation flow.
- Have each person unlock their own private vault and configure recovery information.
- Start with one or two low-risk shared logins.
- Teach autofill, password generation and password-health alerts before migrating sensitive accounts.
- Move additional credentials into narrowly scoped shared vaults rather than one household-wide vault.
Pass Family is not Proton Family
| Plan | Purpose | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Pass Family | Family password management | Up to six Pass Plus accounts, shared vaults and administration |
| Proton Family | Multi-service Proton bundle | Premium Proton Mail, Calendar, Drive, VPN, Pass and broader family features, including shared storage |
Proton explains the wider bundle in its plan documentation and distinguishes Pass tiers in Pass plan documentation. Buying Pass Family does not provide premium access to Proton’s other services.
Launch-price economics
At the announced $47.88 annual total, using all six seats would have cost $7.98 per person per year—about $0.67 per person per month. That arithmetic excludes tax, currency conversion and any later renewal price. If only two people use the account, the household still pays the full subscription, so the per-person value falls sharply.
Best Value

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.

The strongest case was therefore a three-to-six-person household that wanted premium features. A solo user generally has no reason to pay for six seats, and a couple should compare the full household cost with an individual plan or any current Duo option rather than assuming the family tier wins.

| Service | Official price or capacity shown | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden Families | $3.99 per month billed annually, or $47.88 per year, for up to six users | Families seeking the closest current price comparison, open-source software and strong organization sharing |
| 1Password Families | $4.49 per month billed annually; account holder plus up to five invited members | Households prioritizing a polished family workflow and willing to pay more |
| Dashlane Friends & Family | Official page lists 10 members; price is not stated here | Larger families, friend groups or roommate households |
| NordPass Family | Six NordPass Premium accounts; current US price not established here | People already using Nord Security products |
Bitwarden emphasizes open-source software, family collections and zero-knowledge encryption. Proton’s differentiators are its wider privacy ecosystem, hide-my-email aliases and integration with Proton services. 1Password emphasizes family administration and Watchtower alerts. Dashlane’s ten-seat capacity matters when six is insufficient. NordPass highlights Password Health, Data Breach Scanner, email masking and XChaCha20 encryption.
Who should choose it—and who should not
Good fit
- A household with three to six users that wants one subscription and separate private accounts.
- Existing Proton Mail, VPN, Drive or Calendar customers who value ecosystem integration.
- Families needing aliases, dark-web monitoring, an integrated authenticator and shared vaults.
- Adults helping children, parents or less technical relatives while keeping credentials selectively shared.
Look elsewhere when
- You are a solo user or a two-person household for whom six paid seats are wasteful.
- You need more than six accounts; Dashlane’s listed ten-member tier may fit better.
- You require self-hosting, fully open-source tooling, business audit logs, directory integration or formal employee provisioning.
- You only need basic storage and can use Proton Pass Free or Bitwarden Free.
Recovery and security decisions to make first
A family subscription is not an emergency plan by itself. Before migrating important credentials, decide what happens if the owner loses access, identify who can administer membership, and review Emergency Access behavior in the current Pass documentation. Designate a trusted contact where appropriate, store recovery codes somewhere accessible outside the same vault, and do not keep the only copy of the account password inside the account it protects.
Use extra care with banking credentials and children’s accounts. Share only what is necessary and check a financial institution’s terms before sharing access. Do not use a consumer family plan for employees, contractors or a community group that needs centralized ownership, audit trails or formal access controls.

Bottom line
Proton Pass Family was a real six-user password-manager plan launched on October 9, 2024, and its $3.99 monthly figure meant $47.88 billed upfront for a year. It was compelling when all six seats were used, especially for households already invested in Proton’s privacy ecosystem. In 2026, however, treat that amount as historical launch pricing until the live checkout confirms your current price and renewal terms. Compare the total annual bill—not the advertised monthly equivalent—with Bitwarden Families, 1Password Families or a larger-capacity alternative, and choose based on seat count, sharing workflow, recovery needs and ecosystem fit.
