The former Essential-team startup announced the closure internally on September 3, 2024; reports described most employees being laid off, and Droid Life later reported that OSOM confirmed September 6 as its final day. A small engineering group was expected to remain temporarily to meet a final Solana Saga security-update obligation.
What happened, and when?
The timeline moved from an internal announcement to a confirmed closure:
- September 3, 2024: CEO Jason Keats reportedly told employees that most would be laid off and the company would close.
- September 4, 2024: Android Authority reported that OSOM was effectively shutting down.
- September 5–6, 2024: Remaining staff were expected to handle contractual work while the shutdown proceeded.
- September 9, 2024: Droid Life reported, citing TechCrunch, that OSOM had confirmed the closure and that September 6 was its final day. The company website was already offline.
An earlier Android Headlines report described the shutdown as imminent. That wording applied before the closure; OSOM is now a historical shutdown story, not a company still preparing to close.
OSOM began as a privacy company, not a crypto venture
OSOM emerged in 2020 after Essential, the Android hardware company, collapsed. Its founders and early staff included former Essential employees. The name was associated with “Out of Sight, Out of Mind,” reflecting a pitch built around privacy, control of personal data and security-focused hardware.

The planned phone was the OSOM OV1. The company also developed a Privacy Cable with a physical switch intended to disable data signaling. This original positioning matters: OSOM’s crypto identity came later through its Solana partnership, rather than defining the startup from its beginning. Android Authority’s company overview describes that early strategy.
How the OV1 became the Solana Saga
OSOM announced the OV1 in December 2021. In June 2022, it partnered with Solana Mobile and rebranded the handset as the Solana Saga. The phone reached the market in 2023 as a premium Android device with Solana-specific Web3 features.
The Saga used Solana Mobile Stack integrations to support wallets, digital-asset applications and secure transaction workflows. Its distinction was therefore software and ecosystem access, not a new phone form factor. Many of those functions were also available through applications on ordinary Android phones.

Why OSOM ran out of road
Available reporting points to a combination of partner dependence, financing problems and unsuccessful alternatives, rather than one proven single cause.
- Lost successor-device work: Solana reportedly did not select OSOM to build the next Saga, removing a major expected source of business.
- Attempted pivot: OSOM reportedly explored an AI-powered camera product.
- Possible sale: The company reportedly pursued a sale to HP, but the transaction did not materialize.
- Funding exhaustion: OSOM failed to raise additional capital, and reports said its remaining funds were largely exhausted by mid-2024.
Those details come from reporting based on company and internal sources; they are not an audited insolvency account. They do show the risk of building a small hardware business around one strategic partner and one specialized product category.
What the lawsuit alleged—and what it did not establish
Former Chief Privacy Officer Mary Stone Ross filed a case in the Delaware Court of Chancery seeking access to OSOM’s books and records. According to Android Authority’s report, the lawsuit alleged that company resources were used for expenses including two Lamborghinis, a racing hobby and partner compensation, first-class travel and mortgage payments.
These were allegations made in a records-access dispute, not established findings that can be stated as fact. OSOM called the claims “outlandish” and said it expected to disprove them in court. The available reporting does not establish that the lawsuit caused the shutdown or that the alleged spending occurred as claimed.

What closure meant for Solana Saga owners
A Saga could continue to turn on and run Android after OSOM closed. The problem is support, not an automatic instant failure. A manufacturer shutdown makes future firmware, warranty service, repairs, replacement parts, customer support and privacy commitments less certain.
Reports said a small number of engineers would remain temporarily as contractors to fulfill OSOM’s obligations to Solana, including another Saga security update targeted for December 2024. That reporting describes an intended contractual update; it does not establish a long-term support policy or prove every update was delivered.
Checks for anyone considering a used Saga
- Ask when the device last received a security patch and whether updates are still available.
- Confirm compatibility with your carrier’s required LTE and 5G bands.
- Check the seller’s return period and the availability of replacement screens, batteries and other parts.
- Verify that wallet access, activation and any bootloader state work as expected.
- Keep independent recovery credentials for every wallet; do not make a discontinued phone the only way to recover assets.
Unsupported firmware is a material security risk, but it does not mean every existing Saga is immediately unusable. Buyers should price in the loss of a dependable manufacturer support channel.

No single shutdown can settle that question. The Saga faced structural disadvantages: roughly $1,000 pricing against established Android flagships, a relatively narrow crypto and Web3 audience, dependence on Solana’s ecosystem, and a need for developers to create applications that justified dedicated hardware.

Contemporary analysis from Android Authority noted that conventional smartphones already handled many cryptocurrency functions. That weakens the case for specialized hardware, but OSOM’s result also reflected startup funding constraints, the loss of an anticipated partner relationship, failed strategic alternatives and unresolved governance allegations. It would be too strong to attribute the closure to the Saga alone or to declare the entire category impossible.
The practical lesson
OSOM launched one smartphone—the Saga—and at least one other hardware product, the Privacy Cable, rather than becoming a diversified electronics maker. Its path from privacy-first OV1 to Solana-branded crypto phone shows how a startup can gain a high-profile partner while becoming dependent on that partner’s next decision. Once the successor project disappeared, OSOM had little financial runway and no proven replacement business.
For buyers, a mainstream Android flagship generally offers a larger repair network, broader carrier compatibility and a more established update path. A privacy-focused Android device should be judged by its documented support policy and vendor longevity. For long-term crypto custody, a dedicated hardware wallet or an ordinary phone paired with reputable wallet software avoids making one discontinued handset the sole security boundary.
