FDA Class I recall status applies to certain Cal Yee Farm chocolate-covered products because their labels may fail to declare milk and other allergens. People allergic or highly sensitive to the affected ingredients could suffer a serious or life-threatening reaction. Class I describes the potential hazard of the violative product; it does not mean that everyone who ate the chocolate will become ill.
What chocolate was recalled?
The recall concerns selected Cal Yee’s or Cal Yee Farm chocolate-covered products, including chocolate- and yogurt-covered snacks. Cal Yee Farm announced the recall on December 12, 2024. On February 3, 2025, ABC News reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had classified the affected products as Class I, its highest-risk recall category.
The label concern involved possible undeclared milk, soy, wheat, sesame, FD&C No. 6 and almonds. The company said people with an allergy or severe sensitivity to those ingredients could face a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.
What “Class I” means
Under the FDA definition quoted in the reporting, a Class I recall is “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” That classification communicates the seriousness of the potential hazard. It is not a prediction that every package is contaminated or that every consumer will become sick.
Where the products were sold
Reported distribution covered nine states: California, Arizona, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The products were available through retail stores and online channels, so an internet purchase should not be assumed to be outside the recall.
How to recognize potentially affected packages
Use several identifiers together rather than relying only on the brand name. Packaging descriptions reported for the recalled products include:
Rank #2
- Twelve (12) 3.5 oz. Bar of Lindt EXCELLENCE 85% Cocoa Dark Chocolate Bar
- Well-balanced, robust cocoa notes and an exceptionally silky feel in a classic dark chocolate candy bar

- Chocolate bars are pre-portioned into squares for balanced complexity
- Made with premium ingredients from world-renowned regions
| Product packaging | Identifiers to compare |
|---|---|
| Most chocolate-covered products | Clear, zippered plastic pouches in 8-ounce, 1-pound, 2-pound or 5-pound sizes; bright yellow front label; small white UPC label on the back |
| Dark Chocolate Apricots | Plastic containers with either a white or yellow label |
The FDA’s full product list is the controlling reference for the exact product names, UPCs, package sizes and any lot information. A package that looks similar is not automatically included, and a different-looking package is not automatically safe if its product details match the notice.
What to do if you have the chocolate
- Stop eating it. Do not taste a package to decide whether it is affected.
- Keep the package available for identification. Record the product name, size, UPC and lot information, if shown.
- Compare every detail with the FDA notice. Check the FDA’s current recall index and, if necessary, its recall archive for the complete Cal Yee Farm list. FDA says older notices move to the archive after three years.
- Discard or return a confirmed recalled product. Follow the retailer or FDA notice for the specific disposal or refund instructions.
- Get medical help for a possible allergic reaction. Anyone developing signs of a severe reaction after eating the product should seek emergency care immediately and follow their prescribed allergy action plan.
Who faces the greatest risk?
The most direct danger is to people allergic or severely sensitive to an ingredient that was not declared on the label. For those consumers, even a small amount can trigger a dangerous reaction. People without those allergies are not exposed to the same allergen-specific risk, but they should still follow the recall instructions and avoid eating a product that matches the FDA list.

Do not confuse this with a separate 2026 chocolate recall
A different event involved Spring & Mulberry date-sweetened chocolate bars and possible Salmonella contamination. Dow Jones Newswires reported on June 25, 2026 that the recall began in January, expanded in May, and that FDA classification notices covered 41,159 Mint Leaf bars and 48,655 Lavender Rose bars. That Salmonella recall is separate from Cal Yee Farm’s undeclared-allergen recall; product names, hazard type, timing and package or lot identifiers must be checked against the applicable FDA notice.
Where to verify the latest status
Use the FDA’s current recall index first, then its archive if the notice is more than three years old. The notice’s product table—not a general search for “Cal Yee chocolate”—should determine whether a specific package is included. Recall status, affected lots and consumer instructions can change as an investigation develops, so check the current or archived FDA entry before consuming a product in question.
