It built an online marketplace for credits representing atmospheric carbon removal, initially through farming practices intended to increase soil carbon. Nori announced $17.25 million in funding; co-founder Paul Gambill later referred to about $20 million in a retrospective account.
The company’s closure was attributed publicly to weak voluntary-market conditions and an inability to raise enough additional runway. Nori’s experience shows how difficult it is to turn verified climate supply into dependable revenue; it does not prove that carbon removal or soil-carbon projects are scientifically invalid.
What Nori built
Nori focused on carbon removal, not primarily emissions avoidance. Its marketplace connected farmers and agricultural suppliers with companies, small businesses and individuals buying credits intended to represent the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Its initial model centered on regenerative farming practices that could increase soil carbon. Nori issued or tracked Nori Carbon Removal Tonnes (NRTs), using blockchain infrastructure. The company’s 2022 announcement said credits were minted on Ethereum, while later materials referred to platform migration and Web3 infrastructure (Nori’s Series A announcement).

Blockchain could create a visible record of issuance, transfers and retirements and help reduce double counting. It could not, by itself, prove that a tonne had actually been removed, that the removal was additional, or that carbon would remain stored for a defined period. Those questions depended on measurement, reporting and verification (MRV), methodology, baselines and permanence rules.
Nori’s funding and reported milestones
| Date | Event | What was reported |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | Founded | Seattle-based Nori was established (2023 company announcement). |
| September 2020 | Initial venture round | $4 million from Placeholder, North Island Ventures, Tenacious Ventures and others (PR Newswire). |
| September 2021 | Early marketplace milestone | Nori said it had sold its 50,000th NRT and paid six farmers $747,730 (Nori’s account). |
| February 2022 | Series A | $7 million led by M13, with Toyota Ventures and Placeholder participating (Business Wire). |
| April 2023 | Workforce reduction | GeekWire reported a 37% reduction, leaving 17 employees (GeekWire). |
| June 2023 | New CEO and financing | Matt Trudeau became CEO, Paul Gambill moved to chief product officer, and Nori announced $6.25 million in additional funding. The disclosed total reached $17.25 million (Business Wire). |
| September 9, 2024 | Shutdown reported | GeekWire reported that Nori had ceased operations after roughly seven years (GeekWire). |
These milestones are not additive measures of delivered climate benefit. “Tons removed,” “tons sold,” “tons delivered” and “tons retired” can describe different inventories, dates and accounting stages. Nori’s website, as quoted by GeekWire, said it was on track in 2024 to remove more than 700,000 tons and direct $6.5 million to farmers; those were company-reported projections, not independently audited results. In 2022, Nori said ten farmers had received more than $1 million for credits (company announcement).
The Bayer partnership exposed the supply-demand problem
In 2023, Nori announced a collaboration with Bayer’s agricultural program expected to bring hundreds of thousands of verified credits onto its platform. Nori described it as its largest supply opportunity and linked the deal to Trudeau’s appointment and the new financing (Business Wire).

Ag Navigator later described the arrangement as a $14.4 million agreement connected to 400,000 acres. That financial characterization should be treated as a secondary report, not as a confirmed Bayer investment (Ag Navigator).
The commercial tension was straightforward: securing potential supply did not guarantee paying demand. Farmers and project suppliers required data collection, verification and payment before or around credit issuance. Buyers needed confidence in quality and claims, and corporate procurement often moved slowly. Nori needed sales capacity and enough working capital to bridge those timelines.
Why Nori shut down
Public explanation
In a closure message relayed by co-founder Alexsandra Guerra, CEO Matt Trudeau cited a stagnant voluntary carbon market and a difficult fundraising environment. GeekWire reported the shutdown in September 2024 and noted that the founders initially declined comment (Guerra’s post; GeekWire).

Commercial pressures
- Removals generally cost more than avoidance credits, so buyers had to accept a premium product.
- Soil-carbon claims required confidence in sampling, models, baselines, additionality and permanence.
- Nori had to recruit and retain farmers, standardize project data and sell credits to businesses at the same time.
- Enterprise buyers often required diligence, reporting and contractual certainty, lengthening sales cycles.
- The company was helping create a category while venture investors expected a path to scalable marketplace economics.
Runway and governance
Gambill later wrote that Nori had largely solved its supply-side problem after the Bayer relationship, was ramping sales and then could not secure the additional capital needed to continue. He said investors pulled back when the company needed more runway (Gambill’s retrospective).
The same retrospective referenced an essay titled “The $2.5M Empty Board Seat” and presented governance and financing decisions as lessons. That is a founder’s hindsight, not evidence that a board alone caused the closure. The documented funding total is $17.25 million; Gambill’s later reference to $20 million is a separate, less specific retrospective figure.

Soil-carbon projects face structural challenges that a marketplace or blockchain cannot remove:

- Portable & Easy Storage with Trolley Base: The sturdy trolley-mounted base allows for easy movement of this heavy-duty equipment around the workshop. Combined with the compact accessory storage box, all adaptors and tools can be kept organized and within reach
- Measurement: soil carbon varies across fields and over time, making sampling and modeling expensive.
- Additionality: a credit must represent storage that would not otherwise have occurred.
- Permanence and reversal risk: drought, fire, tillage or a change in management can release stored carbon.
- Timing: farmers may change practices years before credit revenue becomes reliable.
- Standardization: farms differ in soil, climate, crops and management, complicating comparable credits.
- Claims: buyers need clear rules for retirement, public statements and “neutrality” assertions.
Nori’s farmer-payment and tracking work addressed parts of the market infrastructure problem, but transparent records did not establish scientific quality on their own (Nori’s 2021 account).

Gambill later said Nori wound down operations and sold its final assets in September 2024 (Gambill’s post). Publicly available accounts do not establish:
- whether every outstanding NRT was retired;
- whether customers received refunds, transfers or continuing access to retirement records;
- how farmer payment obligations were handled after shutdown;
- whether Bayer-related projects continued elsewhere;
- whether Nori’s registry and blockchain records remain accessible; or
- whether the legal entity was dissolved, liquidated or simply stopped operating.
A marketplace can close while underlying farm practices continue, so the shutdown alone does not show that every associated project stopped storing carbon.

Does Nori prove the voluntary carbon market is broken?
No. Nori’s failure is evidence that a venture-backed intermediary struggled to scale in weak market conditions. It is not proof that all carbon removal is uneconomic or that soil carbon is invalid.
A more precise interpretation is that Nori tried to scale a product whose supply, verification, buyer demand, pricing and financing cycles matured at different speeds. A large announced partnership was not the same as realized revenue, and a transparent credit ledger was not the same as durable atmospheric removal.
How newer buying models differ
| Provider | Model | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Climeworks | Standardized portfolios combining nature-based and technology removals. Prices observed in August 2026 were $100, $250 and $500 per ton depending on the mix; Climeworks says delivery occurs within seven years after purchase. | Individuals and smaller businesses wanting a simple purchase. | Portfolio pricing is not equivalent to durable direct-air-capture storage; method mix and delivery timing matter. |
| Watershed Marketplace | Curated projects integrated with emissions measurement, reporting and climate software; no standard public price list. | Enterprises needing procurement, evaluation and internal reporting. | More software- and enterprise-oriented than a retail checkout. |
| Carbonfuture | Project due diligence, verification, audit-ready documentation, tracking and portfolio purchasing; pricing is not standardized publicly (product information). | Organizations prioritizing traceability and durable-removal documentation. | Requires more procurement work and is not aimed at the cheapest one-off purchase. |
| Frontier | Advance purchases and multi-year offtakes; suppliers can apply through innovation and offtake tracks. | Large buyers willing to support future supply and accept delivery risk. | Not a consumer marketplace and generally unsuitable for small immediate purchases. |
Nori’s distinctive combination—farmer-generated soil carbon, open marketplace access and blockchain-based tracking—should not be treated as identical to these alternatives. The newer models generally emphasize curated portfolios, enterprise procurement, durable-removal infrastructure or large advance commitments.
What Nori’s story means for buyers and founders
For carbon-credit buyers
- Ask whether a credit is removed or avoided, how it is verified and how permanence and reversals are handled.
- Distinguish issued, sold, delivered and retired tonnes.
- Confirm who maintains records if a marketplace stops operating.
- Match the purchase to your claim: a portfolio subscription, durable removal and a farmer soil project are different products.
For climate startups and investors
- Plan runway around agricultural and enterprise sales timelines, not only software growth assumptions.
- Secure buyer commitments as carefully as supply agreements.
- Keep MRV and governance independent of marketing claims.
- Ensure the board, investors and executives agree on bridge financing, burn and leadership authority before a cash crisis.
Nori helped make carbon removal legible as a purchasable category and demonstrated that farmers, buyers and verification systems could be connected in one platform. Its shutdown shows the financing and market-formation risk of that model—not that the climate problem disappeared or that every removal pathway failed.
