“Drama” in Lars Reger’s philosophy is not recklessness. In a February 6, 2023 EE Times interview, the then-NXP Semiconductors chief technology officer used windsurfing as a metaphor for technology leadership: set a direction, read changing conditions and react decisively when a perfect plan is impossible. His career—from physics and medical devices to automotive computers and semiconductor strategy—shows how that appetite for uncertainty informed NXP’s bets on radar, secure connectivity, edge AI and software-defined vehicles.

What “drive toward drama” means

Windsurfing demands preparation, physical energy and rapid decisions. Wind and water change too quickly for a rider to script every movement. Reger presented technology leadership in much the same way: executives need a broad destination, but must leave room for technical surprises, market shifts and ideas that were not in the original plan.

That is controlled exposure to uncertainty, not a claim that risk-taking automatically produces profit. The interview’s “pays big dividends” headline is a framing device, not an earnings analysis. Its stronger point is that curiosity and a willingness to experiment can help a semiconductor company find faster-growing opportunities.

Reger’s interests—windsurfing, skydiving, rescue work, submarines, deep-sea diving and astronautics—reinforced the portrait of someone attracted to demanding systems and unfamiliar environments.

From Bad Berleburg to semiconductor strategy

Reger described a childhood in Bad Berleburg, Germany, shaped by natural science and imaginative engineering projects. After military service he studied physics at the University of Bonn and also pursued medicine, partly because he wanted to build medical equipment. Work on semiconductor detectors for medical devices connected those interests to practical electronics.

Siemens recruited him, in a career path later associated with Infineon Semiconductors. He added an executive MBA at London Business School, then moved into Siemens VDO’s automotive-systems work. That combination—physics, sensing, medicine, business and vehicle engineering—became the foundation for his later technology portfolio.

Reger joined NXP in 2013 as an automotive strategist. In the interview he said he became chief technology officer about five years later. Because the source is historical, neither that title nor his current employment should be assumed to remain unchanged.

The automotive systems apprenticeship

One formative project involved an early BMW iDrive-related communication computer. The demanding system used a single Renesas processor for speech recognition, navigation and human-machine-interface functions. The work illustrated a transition from isolated chips toward integrated vehicle computers.

Alex Kocher, who worked with Reger and later hired him at Elektrobit, characterized him as open-minded, energetic, humorous, focused and direct. Reger’s work at Elektrobit began in 2001 and included navigation, connectivity and vehicle-architecture projects. Those experiences help explain why he later treated the car as a networked computing platform rather than merely a collection of electronic control units.

Finding a faster-growing wave

Reger said NXP wanted to identify “new territories” instead of remaining limited to the overall automotive market. He cited approximate growth of 8% for automotive overall versus 25% for automotive radar. Those were his figures in the 2023 interview, not current 2026 market estimates.

He also said NXP reviewed about 220 business cases each year and preferred opportunities supported by financially sound companies. The comments describe a selection process, not proof that every proposal reached production or generated revenue.

NXP’s technology portfolio as described in 2023

The interview grouped naturally into four strategic themes. The maturity labels below matter: a commercial product, development platform, announced collaboration and research project are not interchangeable.

Theme Examples mentioned How to read the claim
Safe and automated mobility S32 automotive platform, radar, BlueBox 3.0, battery management, vehicle-to-everything demonstrations Products and platforms were described as available or being developed; current status requires separate verification.
Secure connected devices Secure elements, UWB digital keys, vehicle networking, time-sensitive networking and software-defined-vehicle processors These were presented as NXP strengths, solutions or collaborations, not an independent industry ranking.
Edge intelligence Arm microNPU licensing, Glow work, vehicle edge computing and event-based vision concepts Some items were licenses or development directions; the interview does not establish broad customer adoption.
Industrial and societal applications SAMPL additive-manufacturing authentication, logistics trackers, industrial safety links and HoverGames rescue drones Demonstrations and educational projects show possible uses, not necessarily scaled businesses.

Safe and automated mobility

NXP highlighted the S32 platform, automotive radar, battery-management systems for electric vehicles and networking for software-defined vehicles. BlueBox 3.0 was described as having twice the embedded-computing power of BlueBox 2.0 and eight times its I/O and PCIe connectivity. That comparison belongs to the 2023 product description; it is not a current specification.

Other examples included a vehicle-network processor, a Volkswagen collaboration involving battery-management systems, and vehicle-to-everything demonstrations intended to warn about hazards, congestion, construction or emergency vehicles.

Secure identity and connectivity

Secure elements and ultra-wideband supported the digital-key concept: a smartphone, key fob or another authorized device could provide secure access and location awareness. NXP also cited connected-vehicle networking, time-sensitive-networking validation work and an industrial safety demonstrator using low-latency secured wireless links.

A separate SAMPL project applied authentication to additive manufacturing by seeking to verify that a 3D-printed spare part was authorized. The common thread is trust at the device or transaction level, not simply adding a network connection.

Edge AI and sensor preprocessing

Reger emphasized moving intelligence closer to sensors. Event-based vision sensors from Prophesee transmit information when a scene changes instead of continuously sending conventional image frames. That approach can reduce data movement and the load on an application processor. The interview explicitly noted that Prophesee had not publicly disclosed an NXP partnership, so it should not be described as a finalized commercial deal.

NXP’s lead-licensee role for an Arm microNPU was presented as support for embedded workloads such as pose estimation, facial recognition, object detection and enhanced speech recognition. Glow-related work was described for selected microcontroller applications. These references indicate a direction toward local inference, not a guarantee of performance in every vehicle or device.

Industrial IoT, logistics and rescue

The examples extended beyond cars. An asset tracker monitored location, temperature and impacts during transport. NXP described connected-vehicle data work involving Teraki, Airbiquity, Cloudera and Wind River, an LTE-M ecosystem involving Avnet, Verizon, Sequans and Microsoft, and cooperation with Dirac on audio quality.

HoverGames, a student-oriented drone platform, included a rescue concept using infrared sensing to locate people in water. These demonstrations gave Reger’s “technology with purpose” theme a concrete form: authentication, safety, logistics and emergency response.

Autonomous driving without a single big bang

Reger’s 2023 view was gradualist. He pointed to existing automated functions such as anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, then imagined a driver manually reaching a motorway, activating a highway-pilot mode and taking control again near the destination.

That scenario should not be confused with full autonomy or with a legal classification of driving automation. Reger also argued that highly autonomous operation could initially make stronger economic sense in taxi fleets and truck logistics than in privately owned passenger cars, where utilization is lower. These were his views at the time; the interview supplied no independent regulatory, safety or market validation.

Research before revenue

Quantum computing was presented as a long-horizon investment. Reger said NXP had begun building quantum computers with German government assistance at its Hamburg site. He framed the effort primarily as a way to attract talent, demonstrate work at the scientific frontier and develop electronics and control expertise that might eventually transfer to cars, drones or other systems.

The interview gave no architecture, milestone, funding detail or production evidence, and described near-term revenue as zero. It is therefore best understood as a research and recruiting signal, not a commercially validated product line.

The same logic appeared in an AI-ethics initiative for edge devices and in a 150-millimeter GaN fab in Arizona aimed primarily at communications infrastructure and future 5G/6G applications. “Aimed at” and “intended to” are important distinctions from proven production results.

The communication test

Reger credited his mother as a “sparring partner” who challenged him to explain technology clearly. If he could not explain a system reasonably—or if the explanation frightened her—he said he needed to reconsider either his understanding or his presentation. His father was skeptical of driver-assistance systems until Reger demonstrated lane keeping and adaptive cruise control in a BMW.

Those stories point to a practical leadership requirement: sophisticated technology must be explainable and trustworthy to people who did not design it. Communication is part of deployment, especially when systems affect safety, privacy or control.

What the metaphor proves—and what it does not

Reger’s career connects scientific curiosity with increasingly integrated automotive and embedded systems. His strategy, as described in the 2023 interview, sought growth in radar, secure elements, UWB, edge AI, connectivity and other areas adjacent to the conventional automotive market.

The interview does not prove that personality traits alone produced NXP’s financial results. Nor does it establish customer adoption, production volumes, safety certification, return on investment or the current status of every partnership and platform. The defensible lesson is narrower: a technology leader can use calculated experimentation to widen the opportunity set, provided ideas are separated from products, demonstrations from deployments and forecasts from verified outcomes.
