The cuts covered multiple departments. Based on PitchBook’s estimate of roughly 191 employees at the time, 27 jobs represented about 14% of the company’s workforce—but that percentage was calculated externally, not published by Brave.
This is a historical 2024 event, not a newly reported 2026 layoff. The available reporting confirms the reduction but does not establish why it happened, which teams were affected, or what Brave’s post-layoff headcount was.
What happened
TechCrunch reported on August 28, 2024, that Brave had laid off 27 employees across multiple departments. Brave confirmed that layoffs had occurred, but the company did not publicly provide a department-by-department breakdown, termination date, severance details or remaining headcount in the cited coverage. TechCrunch’s report is the basis for the 27-person figure.
The wording matters: this was a company-confirmed layoff reported by TechCrunch, not an identified Brave press release announcing a 27-person reduction.

How large was the reduction?
PitchBook estimated that Brave had approximately 191 employees. Dividing 27 reported layoffs by that estimated workforce produces roughly 14%:
27 ÷ 191 × 100 ≈ 14%
The 27 employees are the reported number. The 14% figure is an estimate because both the workforce denominator and the resulting percentage come from outside calculations, not an official Brave headcount disclosure.
| Measure | What is established |
|---|---|
| Employees affected | 27, according to TechCrunch’s report and Brave’s confirmation |
| Estimated workforce before the cuts | Approximately 191, according to PitchBook |
| Estimated share of workforce | About 14%, calculated from those two figures |
| Departments affected | Multiple departments; specific teams were not identified |
| Post-layoff headcount | Not disclosed in the cited coverage |
For a startup-sized company, a reduction of about one in seven employees is material even though 27 jobs is small compared with layoffs at the largest technology corporations.

Timeline: October 2023 to August 2024
- October 2023: Brave cut approximately 9% of its workforce. The company attributed that earlier reduction to “cost management in this challenging economic environment.”
- August 28, 2024: TechCrunch reported that Brave had confirmed 27 layoffs across different departments.
A third-party tracker, TrueUp, lists two layoff events affecting 47 people in total and records 20 employees for the October 2023 event. That 20-person figure is supplemental third-party tracking, not a directly confirmed official number from Brave.

The available reporting does not give a confirmed reason for the August 2024 layoffs. Brave did not explain the cause in the cited account, so readers should not treat any particular theory as established.
What is documented
- Brave cited cost management and difficult economic conditions for the October 2023 reduction.
- The August 2024 cuts affected multiple departments.
- No public explanation for the August 2024 reduction was identified in the cited coverage.
What remains unverified
- That weak advertising revenue caused the layoffs.
- That cryptocurrency activity or BAT performance caused them.
- That AI infrastructure or Leo development caused them.
- That the cuts were a specific restructuring, performance action or runway-preservation measure.
Chronology alone cannot prove causation. In particular, the evidence does not support saying that AI “replaced” the affected workers or that Brave blamed AI spending for the layoffs.

Brave was expanding products at the same time
The layoffs came while Brave was broadening its business beyond its privacy-focused browser. During 2024, the company was integrating Brave Search with its Leo assistant, rolling Leo out across desktop and mobile platforms, offering a paid Leo Premium tier and allowing users to connect their own AI models within the browser. TechCrunch reported Leo Premium at $14.99 per month in August 2024; that was a historical price and should not be treated as the current 2026 price without fresh verification.
These launches explain the business context, but they do not show that AI investment caused the job cuts. The cited reporting contains no financial figures tying product spending to the reduction.

Does the layoff mean Brave is shutting down?
No evidence in the cited coverage shows that Brave was insolvent, abandoning its browser or ending Brave Search. The layoffs indicate that cost-cutting or restructuring may have been taking place, but they do not establish an imminent shutdown.

Brave’s official Greenhouse job board currently lists openings in areas including engineering, sales, security, support, business development and Brave Search APIs. For Brave users
The cited report does not document a browser shutdown, privacy-policy rollback, discontinuation of Brave Search or Leo, changes to Brave Rewards or BAT, or support reductions directly caused by the layoffs. That absence is not a promise that users will see no future changes; it means no immediate user-facing consequence was identified in the available account.
For employees and job seekers
The event is a reminder that a small-company percentage can be more informative than an absolute number: 27 jobs was a substantial share of an estimated 191-person workforce. At the same time, open roles in 2026 should not be read as proof that Brave has restored its former staffing level or achieved financial stability. Candidates would need current company disclosures and role-specific information to assess hiring risk.

For investors and financial-news readers
Brave is a private company, and the cited coverage does not provide revenue, cash-runway, profitability, funding or valuation data. The layoffs alone cannot establish whether the business was weakening, conserving cash, reallocating staff or responding to another internal constraint.
What is still unknown
- The exact date affected employees were notified or terminated.
- The departments, locations, seniority levels and employment types involved.
- Brave’s headcount after the layoffs.
- Severance terms or other employee-support measures.
- The financial trigger, if any, behind the August 2024 decision.
- Any product or service changes directly attributable to the cuts.
Bottom line
Brave confirmed a 27-person layoff reported on August 28, 2024. Using PitchBook’s estimated 191-person workforce, that was roughly 14% of staff—a meaningful reduction for a company of Brave’s size. The company had also reduced staff in October 2023, when it cited cost management, but it did not disclose a cause for the 2024 cuts in the cited reporting. Brave’s simultaneous AI and search expansion provides context, not proof of why the layoffs happened, and current job listings show activity without proving a full recovery.
