Yes—but the June 19, 2025 change was the expiration of a temporary U.S. trade-in boost, not a newly announced permanent penalty on every iPhone. Apple’s standard estimates resumed after the enhanced offer ended on June 18. Reported reductions ranged from $5 to $30, depending on the model. Apple’s live estimates have changed since then, so use the current Apple Trade In estimator before making a decision.
What changed on June 19, 2025?
Apple had temporarily increased the credit available for selected iPhones. The promotion ended at the close of June 18, 2025, and lower standard estimates were reported in the United States on June 19. The adjustment affected the credit applied to a new Apple purchase; it did not automatically reduce the retail price of the replacement iPhone.

These were maximum estimates reported on June 19, 2025 for eligible phones in qualifying condition. They are historical figures, not today’s guaranteed offers, and an inspection could produce a lower amount.

The largest decrease in this table was $30 for an iPhone 12; most were $5 to $20. The figures applied to U.S. estimates and should not be generalized to other countries, where currencies, eligibility and promotions differ.
What your iPhone may be worth now
Apple’s estimator is dynamic and asks for the exact model, storage capacity, carrier status and condition. At the latest page crawl used for this article, Apple displayed estimated U.S. iPhone values from $35 to $685, including up to $685 for an iPhone 16 Pro Max, $550 for an iPhone 16 Pro, $455 for an iPhone 16 Plus and $435 for an iPhone 16. Those are a dated snapshot, not a promise that every model received the June 2025 adjustment or that the amounts remain unchanged.

How Apple Trade In works
Online trade-in
- Open Apple’s Trade In page and select the exact device and model.
- Answer the functionality and condition questions and review the estimate.
- Select the new Apple product and choose how to apply the credit.
- Back up the old iPhone, erase its content, turn off Find My iPhone and remove it from your Apple Account as instructed.
- Use Apple’s supplied materials to ship the phone.
- Make sure Apple receives it within 14 days of receiving the new device, under the current U.S. process.
- Track the trade-in and respond promptly if Apple sends a revised-value notice.
Apple can apply credit toward a purchase or issue an Apple Gift Card. The final credit or refund follows inspection, not merely the initial online estimate.

In-store trade-in
Bring the iPhone to an Apple Store for an evaluation by an Apple Specialist. The result can differ from an online estimate when the physical condition does not match the description. In-store processing suits someone who wants an immediate assessment and does not want to ship the device.
Why the final value can change
- Condition mismatch: Cracked glass, damaged back glass, faulty buttons or cameras, liquid damage and other defects can reduce the quote.
- Find My remains enabled: Apple’s terms identify failure to disable Find My iPhone as a reason for revising the quote.
- Late or missing shipment: The device must arrive within the stated window; a delay can invalidate or change the estimate.
- Another inspection discrepancy: Apple may issue a revised quote and ask you to accept or decline it.
Read Apple’s terms at Apple Trade In Terms and Conditions. Photograph the phone and its condition before packing, and keep the shipping receipt and tracking number.

Important financing and return details
Trade-in credit, Apple Card Monthly Installments, carrier installment billing and carrier promotional credits are separate mechanisms. If the net price of a new iPhone after trade-in is below $99, Apple says the monthly-payment option may not be offered; you may need to pay in full and receive the trade-in value after verification.
If you are in the iPhone Upgrade Program, Apple warns that using Apple Trade In can end that arrangement while leaving the outstanding loan payable alongside the new purchase. Returning the new device can also cancel the associated trade-in, and recovering the old phone may not be possible. Review the conditions on Apple’s Trade In page before sending anything.

Is Apple the best place to trade in?
That depends on whether you value convenience or the highest unrestricted proceeds. Compare the net outcome, including required plans, fees, effort and when you receive the money.

Choose Apple when convenience is worth more than a possible premium
Apple is a practical choice if you are already buying an Apple device, want a simple first-party handoff or prefer an in-store evaluation.
Compare alternatives when maximizing value matters
Get Apple’s live estimate, then obtain a buyback quote and check recent private-sale prices for the same model, storage and condition. A carrier’s larger “up to” figure is only comparable after accounting for the plan, installment commitment and the time required to receive all bill credits.
Bottom line on the June 2025 reduction
Apple did reduce listed U.S. trade-in estimates on June 19, 2025, but the event was the scheduled end of a temporary boost. Most listed cuts were modest, with a $30 maximum in the cited table. Because Apple’s estimates, inspection decisions and competing offers change, check the live quote and compare its net value with a private sale, buyback service or carrier promotion before committing your phone.
