Apple’s online hardware store went offline temporarily on November 29, 2024, as Apple prepared a holiday Apple Gift Card promotion. The change rolled out country by country and was reported as a planned retail update—not evidence of a foldable iPhone, an iPhone preorder, a permanent closure, or an accidental service outage. The promotion ended on December 2, 2024, so this is a historical explanation rather than a current outage alert.
What happened to the Apple Store?
Apple temporarily made its online retail storefront unavailable around the start of Black Friday 2024. According to contemporaneous reporting, Apple was updating its online store and Apple Store app for holiday gift-card offers, with the change appearing on a rolling, country-by-country basis rather than necessarily affecting every market at once. PhoneArena reported the event on November 29, 2024.
This concerned Apple’s retail storefront—the place to buy iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and accessories—not the App Store for downloading iPhone and iPad apps.
Status: The U.S. promotion ran from November 29 through December 2, 2024. It has expired.

Why people thought a product announcement was coming
Apple has often made its online store unavailable around product launches, preorder openings, availability changes and major pricing or configuration updates. That history makes a blank storefront a reasonable launch signal, but it is not an Apple rule that every shutdown means new hardware.
The same retail systems can be taken offline to change product merchandising, prices, inventory or checkout logic. In this case, the timing matched a holiday promotion, and the available reporting did not indicate that Apple was using this particular maintenance window to launch a new product.

What Apple was actually preparing
The U.S. offer provided an Apple Gift Card with qualifying purchases made through Apple retail stores, the online Apple Store or the Apple Store app during the four-day promotional window. Reported gift-card amounts generally ranged from $25 to $200 depending on the product and model. PhoneArena’s contemporaneous list is a historical report of the offer, not a current price list or a complete independently verified terms table.
A gift card is not the same as an instant discount. The purchase price was not simply reduced by $200 for everyone; eligible buyers received future Apple purchasing credit subject to the promotion’s product, market and program conditions.

These figures describe the reported 2024 U.S. offer only. They do not establish current eligibility, current prices or availability, and they should not be read as “$200 off” every MacBook Air or as a blanket discount on Apple products.
What the shutdown did—and did not—mean
- It did mean: Apple was preparing retail pages and checkout for a time-limited holiday incentive.
- It did not mean: Apple had announced a foldable iPhone, foldable iPad or new Mac.
- It did not mean: Apple’s online sales were ending or that Apple Stores were permanently closing.
- It was not described as: an accidental, broad Apple service failure.
- It was not current: the offer ended December 2, 2024.
Gift-card conditions buyers needed to consider
Regional and account restrictions
Apple says its gift cards can be used on apple.com, in the Apple Store app and at Apple Stores, as well as for eligible Apple media and subscription services. The Apple Store gift-card terms and Apple gift-card conditions state that U.S.-purchased cards and balances are restricted to U.S. accounts and purchases, subject to the stated terms. Gift cards generally cannot be redeemed for cash, resold or used to buy additional gift cards except where required by law.

When a gift card is worse than a price cut
- You need the lowest immediate checkout price.
- You are unlikely to buy Apple hardware, apps, subscriptions or services later.
- A retailer is offering a larger instant discount on the same model.
- Your purchase uses education, employee, business or other special pricing that excludes the promotion.
- You may return the qualifying product and have not checked the promotion’s return treatment.
A user-posted Apple Community discussion reproduced terms saying some employee, education and business loyalty pricing could not be combined with the 2024 offer. Because that post is secondary, shoppers should rely on the applicable promotion terms rather than treat it as a universal Apple policy.
Returns and cancellations
Apple’s current U.S. retail policy generally allows eligible products to be returned within 14 days of receipt, while gift cards themselves cannot be returned under that policy. The exact handling of a promotional gift card when a qualifying product is returned depends on the promotion’s terms; it should not be inferred from the standard return window. Scam warning
Apple warns that its gift cards are for Apple products and services. A caller, texter or email demanding an Apple Gift Card for taxes, bills, debt, technical support or law-enforcement action is displaying a common scam pattern. Do not share the code.

A storefront outage by itself is weak evidence of a launch. Use this checklist before drawing a conclusion:
- Check the date and event calendar. Is the change immediately before a confirmed launch, preorder or sales promotion?
- Read Apple Newsroom. An actual product announcement should have an official Apple release or announcement page.
- Watch what returns. A gift-card banner, revised pricing or refreshed product page points toward merchandising rather than secret hardware.
- Compare markets. Country-by-country changes suggest a retail rollout; an irregular outage across users may indicate a technical incident.
- Test the scope. Can you browse products but not check out, or is the entire retail storefront unavailable?
- Separate services. The Apple Store, Apple Store app and App Store are different products. A retail-store change does not mean iOS app distribution has stopped.
These are practical clues, not official Apple diagnostic rules. Only an Apple announcement can confirm a product launch.
Where to shop now
For current products, use Apple’s official pages for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Gift Cards. The Apple Store app is another retail channel.
Apple direct can be useful for trade-in, engraving, custom configurations and Apple support. Carriers may provide bill credits tied to service plans, while large retailers may offer immediate discounts or rewards. Refurbished or previous-generation products can cost less but require checks of warranty, battery condition, seller reputation and model age. Compare the total price and conditions rather than treating a historical gift-card amount as the best deal.
